DRINKING THIS BEER WILL PUT YOU IN A MUCH BETTER MOOD THEN RASPUTIN

Appearance: Very dark and thick, almost like oil. Has a brownish two-finger head which lasts a long time (as in several minutes) and leaves some good lacing.

Smell: This beer smells of chocolate and molasses, and has a very sweet scent. Heavy on the malt, with a little bit of caramel in there. Has a slight bitterness in the undertone.

Taste: COFFEE. Seriously, the first thing that comes to mind is the taste of coffee. Bitter at first, then gets a little sweeter. Molasses, caramel, and toasted malts are in there. Very dark, rich, and creamy.

Mouthfeel: Thick and full, like heavy cream. Not acidic or overly carbonated. The aftertaste is very similar to coffee and cream, with no sugar.

Drinkability: This is a delicious Russian Imperial Stout, and an ideal sipper. It's also great with a snack, or while playing a game of darts or pool. If you like this kind of beer, especially one with a heavy coffee taste, check this one out. Just remember there's no caffeine in it.

Poured this beer from a bottle into a snifter. It appears dark and opaque when held to the light. A caramel colored head forms reaching ~3/4 inch before receding to a thin lace around the edge of the glass.
The smell is unique with some dark chocolate and coffee notes and a sweetened alcohol scent, that blends fairly well with the malt and other scents.
The taste is again noted to have a coffee component mixed with the bitterness of dark chocolate, which lingers on the palate nicely.
The alcohol is definitely present in the mouthfeel, which is a thick and pleasantly warming mix. There is a reasonable level of carbonation.
Overall, I have enjoyed this beer for several years and have never rated it before. It is everything I would expect from a good imperial stout with great coffee and chocolate flavor.

Poured from a bottle into a wide mouth pint glass

A-Dark coffee brown near black very thick and smooth, nice head great lace.

S-The one downfall of this one nose is very small hints of malt and vinilla

T-Nothing like the nose as far as the subtle goes this one is big throughout, rich robust coffee flavor, with notes of vinilla, malt with an amazing bitter finish.

M-Nice thick body very complex flavors great carbonation level.

D-I am sad that I have not had this before but I will have it often from now on.

Bottle poured into a tulip glass.

A- An aggressive pour leaves more than a 2 finger head that slowly drops to a thick lace leaving great, fluffy, sticky spots on the glass. The body was nearly jet black with dark brown edges.

S- Raisin-like. Sweet liquor scents(brandy perhaps?) and coffee with a touch of toffee and bitter chocolate.

T- Deep-strong coffee flavor with hints of dark chocolate and toffee, with some resin-like hops that hit late.

M- Thick, yet soft feel with a slight bite from the hops and alcohol that leaves a warming sensation.

D- Definite sipper, but great flavor will bring me back.

Had this at Cooper's Bar in Chicago, it was poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. This was the last beer of the night after a great dinner, so it was almost like ordering an after dinner coffee. The color is a nice dark black with a small head. The alcohol smell is slight but masked by the coffee and malt smells. The coffee tastes comes through very nicely, with a very light chocolate taste but not that sweet at all.

If you like coffee definitely worth reaching for.

smell doesn't strike me as much, chocolate and malts

taste is incredibly chocolatey and malty, dark chocolate and esspresso, creamy and smooth. quite possibly the most delicious RIS I've ever had.

thick, creamy and oh, did I say THICK! superior drinkability but watch out it will kick your ass!

Was excited to see this on tap at The Brew Kettle in Strongsville, Ohio outside of Cleveland. Had a pint poured off a nitro tap.

Appearance: Darkest chocolate brown with a milky, froth head and good milk-chocolate colored lacing - like on hot chocolate.

Smell: Creamy coffee with hints of chocolate.

Taste/Mouthfeel: The taste is very chocolately and warming, with a hit of cream and bitter coffee beans. The alcohol is very present with a heavy finish in the aftertaste and back of the throat. A little overwhelming. Light carbonation keeps it from being too strong and adds to the clear mouthfeel.

Drinkability: This is big and heavy like a RIS should be. Don't drink a lot - just enjoy.

Pours an opaque black with a two inch brown head that lasts.

I have been looking forward to trying this one and if the smell is any indication of the taste then the wait was worth it. A strong aroma of chocolate and espresso and some alcohol.

Their is a nice alcohol taste at the forefront with a little hop bitterness than the espresso takes over. Then the chocolate and hops combine to give almost a semi sweet dark chocolate taste. Surprisingly their is a nice hop bitter aftertaste. Very nice RIS, perfect for a cold winter day.

S - definite chocolate notes, slight coffee, with a bit of alcohol

T - chocolate malts, coffee, alcohol

M - like carbonation, semi-thick consistency

D - this is one delicious RIS, I would drink it whenever I could get it

Pours beautifully - nice and dark, almost black with a frothy tan head that settles to about 1/16". Laces great too. Smells of dark chocolate, cream and a hint of coffee - sort of like Cool Whip splattered on Hershey's dark chocolate. Yummy. I get no hint of alcohol at this point - maybe some will poke out as it warms. The taste mirrors the smell with plenty of chocolate and coffee followed by a long, bitter finish that invites you back for more. The beer is very full bodied and somewhat sweet - making it more of a sipper than a quaffer. My only other RIS reference point is Sprecher's, which I find unbalanced and plodding on the palate. This beer is delicious and very drinkable. Throw in a great price (under $7 for a 4-pack) and I will be buying more!

bought beer in store.

Beer has a deep dark color and is full and thick. Thick head. Smells sweet. Color is a dark black color.

Flavor is rather malty with a good amount of bitterness. Smell is chocolaty and sweet.

Very well made and crafted. Friend of mine bought this me a year ago and it is one of the best imperial stouts I have every had.

Pours black with a short tan head and nice lacing.

Scent of chocolate, roasted malts, tobacco, dark fruits, hops, and a bit of alcohol. Really well balanced and strong, great scent.

Taste of chocolate, roasted malts, dark fruits, and a faint hop kick. This stuff if just great, a classic Russian Imperial Stout, one of the best examples of the style.

Mouthfeel is full, but there is too much bite, probably my only complaint.

Damn, this stuff is crazy drinkable.

Pours a thick, midnight black with little head and little lacings. This stuff is thick. A strong malt smell of roasted, coffee, some chocolate, probably some other malts like bread or toasted could be in there. Incredibly smooth when you first sip it, the roasted and chocolate malts really kick in. Definitely a sipper. Full-bodied and slightly creamy (although you could slightly syrupy as well), this beer passes over the tongue leaving behind that malty goodness and finishes with a firm, dry backbite. If it weren't for the ABV I could drink this all day.

Burnt malt and cocoa hit the nose.

Full flavor! Nice! Big robust malts and chocolate with flavors of espresso. Slight bitterness to it as well.

Full and rather smooth in the mouth.

Nice, big stout. Rather easy to drink but remember the alcohol, it creeps up on you.

Poured a solid black. At first there appeared to be no head, but after a few seconds head formed, which I found both interesting and awesome. Head has good retention at a fingers width, is nut brown in color, and is thick and foamy.

Smell is strong with roasted malt, oatmeal, chocolate and molasses.

Taste is well built, starting with the bittersweet from the roasted malt. The flavor mellows into a roasted nut with chocolate hints, and as the beer warms the flavors become a bit more harsh.

Mouthfeel is heavy bodied with a very thick and syrupy feel. As I poured the last sip the beer hung onto the bottle like it didn't want to let go.

Drinkability is good. This is a great stout, no wonder its won so many medals. Goes down pretty easy too, considering the ABV.

This beer was one of my early favorites after I started going online to look at reviews for beer. It's a dark, dark brown and has a head that's a bit lighter than ideal, but it still looks good. The nose is full of chocolate with some coffee, malt and other complexity. Chocolate comes through strongly in the flavor. There's really a lot going on, more than I'm able to describe accurately, anyway. There is some sweetness, a lot of malt, some coffee and some hoppiness. It's a good RIS, which puts it beyond my relatively undeveloped descriptive capabilities. The mouthfeel is fairly smooth with good carbonation. The drinkability is high, and the beer has a nice dry finish to complement its complex flavors. It's a really great stout with a lot going on and a smooth feel.

Pours black with a dark tan head that has decent retention. When it does disappear it leaves very nice lacing.

Smells of strong roasted malt, sugars, and dark fruit esters. Carries on into the taste, but much more boldly. The roasted malt is predominate, along with a bit of balancing bitterness. The fruits are nearly gone, though there's a hint of chocolate.

Mouthfeel is quite nice. Thick, with a creamy head; pretty much what one would expect of a stout.

Overall a very nice RIS. Not exactly terribly drinkable, but that's just in the nature of the style.

Pours a very, very deep and dark black, with just flashes of blood-red hints at the very edges. Head is a solid, crusty cap of coffee-crema brown. Tiny streams of minuscule bubbles float up at the edges. Lacing is exceptional. An excellent looking beer.

Dark, smoky characteristics on the nose. Dusty dark chocolate, roasted grains, barnyard, even a light meaty character. It's not overly powerful, but it is dark and pleasant.

But wow, the taste is where it packs a punch. Light roasted bitterness first up, mellowing to a chocolate-coffee sweetness and a lingering chalky dryness, but still toasty and warm. The alcohol is exceptionally well hidden, leaving just that residual heat on the palate. Long and drawn out on the palate, lots of complexity but all on a hearty and solid base. Mouthfeel feels just slightly too light to me, for such a heavy-flavoured beer, I was expecting something a bit smoother and creamier on the feel.

But this is a very tasty, and very robust beer. Lots of character, lots of flavour - too heavy for more than one in a sitting, but worth waiting around for the occasional sip.

Poured jet back with a small caramel colored head from a 1/6-barrel keg. Smells of beautiful deep roasted coffee, chocolate, and deep roasted malts. First sip is sweet chocolate and a ton of coffee - lovely and delicious. Complex and somewhat creamy, its backbone is not nearly as heavy or complex as a DL but it is creamy enough to make Old Rasputin one fine World Class RIS.

Appearance: Black, unexpectedly huge head.

Smell: Rich dark chocolate.

Taste: Rich, semi-sweet dark chocolate dominates. A little touch of coffee. Enough bitterness to give some more character.

Mouthfeel: Thick stuff.

Drinkability: Usually the lowest priced Imperial Stout in the store means it can be purchased more often and therefore, drank more often.

Four packs of this were on sale for $6.99 so I picked one up. A high quality brew in a relatively inexpensive package. Not my favorite IS but pretty tasty too.

They had this on tap @ the local flying saucer.

Wow! Wow! Wow! This is a great imperial stout. I was planning on getting a different beer but got another glass of Old Rasputin. Hopefully, I can find this in a bottle somewhere..

Appearance: About a 2 inch coca tinted head. Served in a unique glass that I don't know but it was between a pint and a snifter. Almost a wide wind glass.

Smell: Strong dark malt and a hint of coffee, but this had hops. i'm a hop head so this was a good thing

Taste. Smooth, nitro carbonated very flavorful. Love the hop taste of this beer.

Mouth feel. Very thick, probably because it was on tap. Like a hoppy thicker Guinness.

Drink ability: Do you have to ask? I ordered 3 of them that night. I wanted to try other brews but this one was so good I had to have more.

This is a great beer. Great example of an imperial IPA. Will definitely try more of this style in the future. Best non-Guinness stout I've had

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle.

Creamy looking head, tannish in color. Good head retention. Lacing sticks to side of glass. Beer is very dark brown, almost solid black, cannot see through it.

Smell is thick with chocolate flavors. Smells like it would be a very sweet drink.

Excellent mouth feel, with a decent amount of carbonation that sort of bites the tongue.

Initial taste is very sweet but immediately becomes bitter as you swallow. Finishes with an excellent roasty flavor that stays on your tongue. Almost has a salty taste that lingers.

Drinkability is good considering the finish leaves you wanting another sip for the initial sweetness.

I am now fortunate enough to appreciate any kind of stout. If you asked me a year ago what I thought about the genre, I would have said, "ouch." Now my attitude has changed to "BRING IT ON!!!!"

I have had this beer a few times and never appreciated its wonders. This beer embodies all the characteristics I've been looking for in a Russian Imperial Stout.

I poured the 12oz bottle into short, stalky tulip glass and immediately the contents yielded a pitch black liquid with a rugged gold foam that resembles the gold colored lining on the label.

There is a subtle alcohol nose, at first, but there wasn't enough for me to care about. What I was looking for was the body, and this beer has a full figured. This beer has a thick, roasted body with a heavy dose of espresso. Having spent some time drinking espresso, I was excited when I noticed that this beer resembles a smooth cup of espresso, it wasn't too bitter and left a pleasant oily feeling on my tounge afterwords.

This beer is great for the seasons to come: fall and winter. Have this one before you go to bed, for a great sleep. This beer comes in a four pack, and I recommend holding on to a few and see where the aging process takes it.
