12oz bottle into standard pint.

A: black as black can be. About an inch of rich foamy kahki head fell into a thick ring around the glass. No light gets through this, during the pour it was deep deep brown like ebony or mahogany.

S: big roasty notes, I get notes of dates and prunes. a bit of alcohol. No hops that I can detect.

T: I love this stuff. Big toasted and roasted notes, a bit of the date flavor from the nose. Lots of hop on the finish that last a good long time.

M: thick and rich but not as heavy as its american counterparts. Smooth and dangerously drinkable.

O: deserves all the hype it gets. Holds its own and works well with foods.

A: Poured like motor oil from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass - and that's a beautiful thing! The brew is pitch black with a tan colored head that fades but leaves nice lacing on the glass.

S: A truly lovely bouquet of malt, coffee, and chocolate, with a hint of floral undertones.

T: Simply put, this is one excellent RIS. The coffee flavor hits you right in the head, and the high (9% ABV) finishes it off.

M: Very pleasant and thick, with a sweet maltiness balanced by a dry stout finish. Exquisite.

O: One of my favorite beers, this one never disappoints. I always look for this when I'm "picking a six."

From a bottle poured into a plastic cup (I was in a hotel …you do what you gotta do).

Opaque black with a tall, medium brown persistent head.

Aroma is dark chocolate, coffee and roasted malt with citrus hops.

Big flavor: chocolate and espresso, malt sweetness and moderate hop bitterness which balance the ethanol very well. Hint of oak

Mouthfell is thick and smooth, with oily creaminess, ethanol warmth but again, perfectly balanced.

The overall impression is a great balance between big, roasted malt, moderately high hop bitterness and ethanol.

Poured very dark into a snifter. Very robust, strong, deep roasted malt character with slight hop aromas in the malt. Thick dark head.. perfectly carbonated. The mouthfeel is creamy but balanced. Roasty yet clean. The taste was malty.. chocolate notes.. coffee notes.. strong but pleasant. Easily one of the most drinkable imperials i have had. Perfection. I give this beer an overall 5/5.. why? Legacy is a part indeed yet taste.. style.. and everything about this beer was exceptional to me. Cheers mates

Raspy pours black with a thick fluffy beige head. This beer laces like a champ! There were rings all down my glass! And, the ice cream soda looking head is going the distance! I’m almost done, with plenty of head left.

There's a strong chocolate, cream nose.

First there’s a rush of dark coffee, espresso, bitter chocolate, molasses, and burnt malt flavors. Then this stout finsihes with subtle hops and an INCREDIBLE cereal-malt-espresso aftertaste that lingers LONG.

The mouth feel is silky smooth, with medium carbonation and a heavy weight on the tongue.

This beer is OUT OF THIS WORLD. I would LOVE to find this stuff on tap! Easily, this is one of the absolute BEST crafted, looking, and tasting brew that I have ever come across!

(12oz. bottle) Awesome black opaque liquid. Rocky tan head. A truly remarkable appearance. A thin creamy layer of foam lasts, leaving residual lace. Huge aroma of chocolate, burnt molasses, ripe prunes and alcohol. Perfect balance of bitterness and sweetness...doesn't possess that sticky sort of sweetness. Just of multitude of flavors happening here; chocolate malt, prunes/raisins, coffee with a welcome alcohol warming sensation in the belly. A delicious, outstanding treat.

An old, old favorite that I've been loyal to since my very first sip.
Huge, cocoa-colored head, properly boisterous and fizzy. Phenomenally aromatic: all the regulars for this style and more are here in attendance--cocoa, coffee, toffee, nuts. Very mellow, despite the flavor and strength. Perfectly black in color, fantastic texture: thick and chewy, but not overly so.
This is a great accompaniament for any meal, particularly rich and spicy food. I'd compliment the finish, but it never stops! The flavor sticks in your mouth forever, it seems. One of the finest stouts in all the universe.

Aroma is most interesting with notes of coffee, nuts and brandy. It pours thick and is darkest brown with garnet edges...beautiful canyoned mocha head...Lace like sea-foam...Rich roastiness and subtle candy sweetness that is tempered with that warm brandy-like kick. Awfully smooth gong down...amusing Blackstrap tang hovers behind wisps of hop essence as a last remark. This is simply a superior product.

Bought A four pack at Canals in New Jersey for $8.99

Wow, what a beer! Poured a midnight black with an amazingly dense and creamy head. Fresh roasted coffee, dark chocolate and alcohol on the nose. The taste is of heavy hops, roasted barley and alcohol. An easy sippin' brew. I haven't tasted too many IS's, but this comes close to what I would call perfect.

I poured this"staretz," or holy man out as a absolute blackness. Only the direct sun refracts a deep mystic brown red peasant hue from its edges. Rich aromas predict assassination of the Imperial Family of beers. Born in Siberia on the banks of the Tura River and renowned for his drunkenness, stealing and womanizing were activities Rasputin in fact was developing into a rake, a man with a debauched, and endless, sexual appetite. This brew will change you in a similar way. This extreme aromatic stout is truely a liquid full of flavors. Rasputin was an advocate of the renegade sect within the Orthodox faith, the Skopsty trying to reach God was through sinful actions practicing "sin to drive out sin." A awesome brewed RIS to drive out all other RIS's this miracle worker's powerful aroma and stong flavors hypnotize and cause the bleedings for the ultimate RIS to stop. Old Rasputin will gain your undivided support.
During Rasputin's fateful last evening, the conspirators drugged, poisoned, beat and shot him. Yet the staretz survived all these and actually died by drowning when his body, wrapped in a carpet was thrown into the Moika Canal on the Neva River. As you wrap your self in its 8.9 abv rug of thick run of coffee, chocolate, dark-roasted malts and hop weave and throw yourself into its dark velvet fluid, enjoy your ultimate plunge into darkness and sinful bliss as you overthrow all other Russian imperials.

Poured into a pint glass

Appearance: This beer poured a dark, black liquid with a tannish caramel like head.Slightly cascading in my glass, and lots of laceing clinging to the sides.

Aroma:The nose is of dark chocolate, roasted coffee bean, butter infused oats and supremely disguised alcohol. A very pleasureable moment indeed.

Taste: Chocolate all over the palate. As this beer warms the alcohol lets itself be known, but not too over powering.Caramel, butterscotch, and a long enticing bitter hop finish.A true masterpiece.(Applaudes)

Mouthfeel: Chewy, syrupy, low carbonation, but would have liked to see a little thicker mouthfeel.

Drinkability: The urge was to pound this beer, but I had to actively slow down and appreciate all of its amazing characteristics. Go out and buy this immediately. A truly orgasmic experience, I want more!

another pickup by my wife on her latest trip to Trader Joes. Massive head, poured too cold so i let it sit 5 minutes to settle. brilliant lacing. totally opaque black/brown color. Roasty alcohol chocolate odor. smells so good i want to shotgun the bloody thing. oh man. this tastes as close to my all time favorite (Thunderhead Brew co. Russian Imperial Stout) as i've gotten. Complex, roasted chocolate malt flavor. some bitterness. not quite the best but still a 5 for taste. almost perfect mouthfeel. a bit fizzy but i'll cellar a couple to see if i can get some of the bitterness and fizziness down. could drink these all night till i pass out.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle. Leaves an espresso-foam colored head of about one finger in depth, and has very good retention, and good spotty lacing. Body is almost black, being the deepest possible brown. Looks very beuatiful.

Smell - the nose is filled with roasted, smokey malt and dark crusted malt bread, as well as chocolate, figs, raisins, plums, dark dried fruits, and spicy, medicinal alcohol. Mouthwatering.

Taste - pretty much as promised by the nose, with the additon of caramel swirling throughout, and a slight lemony hop twang at times. Again, roasted, smokey malt with taste of dark dried fruits such as raisins and figs, and some ripe ones like plums. Malt bread baked long enough to almost burn the crust, with some chocolate and caramel to go along with the fruits, all in a swirl, with spicy, medicinal alcohol tying it all together. Delicious. And no harshness from the alcohol at all - it's well integrated into the taste, being pretty well hidden, only by lending its big spicy medicinal flavor do you know it's there.

Mouthfeel - full bodied, smooth, chewy at times - sort of " fluffy ", like when one eats puffed grain cereal.

Drinkability - this is an excellent ale, with well hidden abv. Very hearty, and delicious. It's that abv that holds down sessionability, so it's a sipper to be enjoyed slowly with only a couple of servings at a given session - but do so often, I will.

Had this on tap at Taco Mac and was blown away with it

A - This was the most pleasing eye candy I've ever seen out of a beer..it came to the table with the look of a Guinness pour with a dark bottom, a tan middle and then a thick creamy light tan head that was like a pillow, leaving a stick full ring of dried foam down the sides..it wasn't even lace it was thicker than that

S - The smell was big with mocha and a roast chocolate smell with hints of toast and just a bit of hops

T - The taste was amazing big statement of mocha and chocolate and roasted malts with the perfect amount of hops

M - Creamy and thick and luxuriant

D - It was one of the very best beers I've had thus far along my journey and I have to believe having it on draft was the perfect way to go..this was so good I will seek it out again and again

WOW, this beer is amazing. It pours black and oil like (but slightly less than other RIS's). Has an amazing dark tan head that is fluffy and dense and leaves pretty good webbing. The smell is very complex with caramel, coffee, chocolate, burnt woods, and many other dark scents. The taste is even better, same flavors as listed above but more concentrated. Its absolutely amazing ,and pretty much beyond words that I can express right now. Amazing, one of my favorites.

12 oz brown bottle purchased at Green's in Columbia, SC. Pours a absolutely beautiful jet black with thick dark tan head. The sweet aroma of roasted malt dominates with some alcohol pressence. This is by far the most impressive Imperial Stout I have ever seen or tasted. Taste is very smooth and balanced with expresso, coffee and chocolate notes. The carbonation is moderate. About as close to beer prefection as you can get.

Dark brown almost black in color with a brown fluffy head that didn't last long but, left a good lacing on the glass. Wonderful aroma of dark roasted malt, chocolate and coffee then topped off by the hop aroma.
Flavor of dark roasted malts, dark chocolate and coffee with a great hop bitterness and flavor. Excellent mouthfeel and it also hid it's 9% alcohol well. Just a tremendous beer.

A kingdom within a 12 oz serving. A plethora of generosity expressed through a robust, chocolate-expresso environment. Sweet syrup delivered crisp. An aroma to inebriate the senses, a behemoth of flavor. Bitter toward the rear; an invaluable balance to the grand, indulgent flavor provided up front. Spectacular! A beacon of light that illuminates Russian Imperial Stouts, the royalty of dark beer.

i poured this little bottle of magic into a snifter. pours a thick black with a solid two finger burlap colored head that stayed thick for at least five minutes, i got a little floating island of head down to the bottom. nice lacing. the smell is great hints of coffee chocolate, brown sugar, molasses with a hint of alcohol. the flavor of this beer is great. i get hit by the chocolate, nice and bitter, i can feel a bit of the alcohol in the back of my mouth. full flavor. the subtle aftertaste lingers for quite some time. great mouthfeel. the beer is an easy drinker. with the scents and the variety of flavors on this beer i would say its a journey. i would love to cook with this sometime.

Opaque black appearance with a thin head the colour of espresso crema. Intense aroma of coffee with hints of burnt toast and bittersweet chocolate.

Very fine and spritzy carbonation lightens the mouthfeel up front. Fairly full body with a smooth & creamy texture. Luscious, roast and bitter character with plenty of coffee and bittersweet chocolate, and subtle notes of baked prune, molasses, and faint licorice, all with a dry edge. Big, lengthy finish. Very flavourful. Leaves a lingering bitterness, with a roasty and tangy character. Superb!

Surprisingly drinkable for its alcoholic strength, with some burn on the finish. Small bits of foam cling to the glass. Outstanding example of the style.

I would pair this with chocolate - either a rich, dense cake or some nice Belgian chocolates.

Looking forward to try out my new Sam Adams snifter.

Appearance: Pours a jet black with creamy coffee head. The head looks like it is going to rise up, but instead disappears instantly. For a beer with 9% ABV this is to be expected.

Smell: Alcohol mixed with dark fruit. Smells like a liquor. Chocolate, ice cream, raisin and cherry. Smells like liquid dessert. Extremely complex and delicious.

Taste: Amazing! The delicious smell cannot even compete with the taste. Everything I named in the smell plus a cast of others. Impossible to put in words. Get this and try it if available.

Mouthfeel: Remarkably smooth with the taste covering all parts of the tongue. First hits sweet, then bitter roasted coffee and chocolate. Not a bit of astringency or off flavors. Probably over 7 different flavors in one sip. I want to try and describe all the flavors, but I want to drink more.

Drinkability: A beer to be savored and analyzed. Would be the perfect dessert after a fancy meal or a warming beverage after long day of skiing. The winter would be the ideal time to consume. Due to the alcohol and body of this beer, it is best enjoyed in moderation.

I loved this beer. Plus the glass looks great.

12 oz bottle poured into a snifter

A- Pitch black with a two finger tan head that stays and sticks to the sides of the glass.

S- Getting figs/dark fruit smell with a hint of alcohol up front, getting hints of roasted malts, coffee and dark chocolate.

T- Just great. The roasted malts and coffee really come out right away with a hint of chocolate and dark fruit flavors. Well balanced and a small bitter bit in the finish.

M- Nice medium body and slick, carbonation is a little too much.

D- Wow, just a great beer. The 9% ABV is completely hidden in the taste, making this very easy to drink. It has great complexity but is not to the point were have one is enough. I feel that I could easily drinking a whole four pack in a night if I wanted. I have been been just walking by it for the past 3 or 4 months saying that I will try it soon, I will not be walking by it again!
