Poured from a bottle into a snifter at cellar temperature.
Old Rasputin's head is a dense, three-finger mass of light brown foam which lingers on for quite some time. This stout isn't totally pitch black, as light penetrates the edge of the surface in the glass, but it's still pretty dark and opaque. It leaves some pretty lacing on the glass. One of the prettiest imperial stouts I've seen.
In the smell I get vanilla, sweet milk chocolate, raisins, prunes, and a hint of earthy coffee. Really nice.
Pretty much everything in the smell is also in the taste with the chocolate and tart dark fruits, but there is also a great aftertaste of coffee bitterness and earthy roastiness. The alcohol is VERY well buried under this stout's excellent qualities. I'd say it could pass for 6%.
The carbonation is medium to high. I've had other imperial stouts that are more thick and viscous than this, but it's still pretty substantial. It's good.
This is an amazing, standard-setting sort of Russian imperial stout. It may be one of the most common and widely available beers in it's style, but there is nothing "common" about Old Rasputin's character (either the beer or the historical figure).

Bottle into tulip
Appearance- jet black, half finger tan head, very good lacing.
Aroma- roasted malt, coffee, dark fruits, some chocolate, char. some alcohol as it warms very nice
Flavor-roasted malt, dark fruit, coffee, rich robust, some alcohol, complex
Mouthfeel- Medium, maybe a little thin for the style, but smooth, alcohol warmth
Overall- Very nice, a cult standard RIS, new to the style? try this, remains a go to RIS for me, although there are better out there, I return to this a lot.
