Poured into a pint glass revealing a 1 finger head with good retention and lacing. The color was a very dark brown, almost black. The smell was heavy with roasted nodes. I also noticed a decent amount of coffee and a little chocolate in the smell. The mouth feel was great with a nice chew and I found this beer to be very filling. Everything you want in a good imperial stout. The taste was no surprise. A lot of roasted malts and some coffee. I would not have guessed it was 9%. I would have loved to have more sweetness come through along with the other tastes. Overall this beer was very good. Everything I expected from this imperial stout. (645 characters)

This was interesting, but not as enjoyable as Blvd's "Dark Truth." Poured a dark black with a decent head and lacing. Smell was largely roasty with some sweet brown sugar notes. Nice mouth feel: very filling, but for me, just not enough sweetness pushing-back against the heavy roasted bitterness: Still much better in that regard though as compared to some of the Sam Smith brews, etc: Note - Very pronounced lingering coffee bitterness on the palate long after the deed was done. Definitely felt the 9.00 afterwards as well. (534 characters)

Man oh man, am I glad I found this at the package store. I will have to beg the manager to keep stocking it.

A: Beautiful. Cascading pour is reminiscent of a Guinness but the bubbles don't waterfall since there isn't nitrogen infused. A two-inch caramel head that refuses to die. Becomes pillowy and leaves minimal lacing. The foam slides down the side of the glass and recollects on top of the beer. Beer is a deep, deep red-brown from what little I can see on the edge of the mug but the body is black. Light does not penetrate.

S: warm and malty sweet like some graham cracker and allspice. Light fruitiness probably from hops since yeast is probably killed by the higher ABV. A little bit of grass and earth. Slight alcohol vapor takes it to the head.

T: VERY rich and complex. Toasted biscuit or sweetbuns with good rounded coffee notes and some dark chocolate depth. Slight bitterness from hops and toasted grain. Malt is sweet and bready without being cloying. Slight alcohol astringency helps cut the malt stickiness and the dark toast flavors linger for a long time.

M: Rich, full-bodied and creamy from foam. Alcohol helps dry the palate a little and cuts the sticky malt and sugar and it leaves a nice bite after enveloping the mouth in rich softness.

Beautiful beer and well worth the $2.50 (plus tax!) per bottle. Very few bad notes here and they are just nitpicks. It could use a point or so less ethanol but it leaves a lovely buzz so it is worth it. Also I would enjoy slightly more chocolate but again that is subjective. Great stuff. If this was on tap I would be in heaven. I will try to make this a staple.

Good health, great beer. (1,658 characters)

A-Black color with a hint of brown, nice warm light brown thick head that lingers
S-Malt upfront, toasted and roasted malt with an alcohol odor at the back end
T-I get sweetened coffee, and then a chocolate flavor, with a nice bitter balance
M-Carbonation is subtle but on the higher end which I like. It cleanses the palate to enable the bitterness to follow through.
O-I really enjoyed this beer and I recommend it. (418 characters)

A very excellent imperial stout. Dark, dark mahogany with light lacing around the edges. Smell of dark roasted grains, coffee. Taste is a complex sequence of events, from an initial bittersweetness of burnt toast and light anise, which moves sharply to a alcohol twang with campfire smoke, a woody taste that isn't unpleasant, to a lingering bitterness in the back of the mouth that is a complex interplay of roasted malt and hops bittering elements. I wish the mouthfeel was heavier and creamier. (497 characters)

Delicious, one of the best of the always available beers. Beer is a deep jet black color with a light tan/creme head. Beer has a great bitter coffee/dark chocolate taste to it with a good amount of carbonation. The beer is very smooth and refreshing for the style without losing its bitter Russian Imperial character. (320 characters)

Thick velvety smooth mouth feel. Hits of chocolate, coffee and dark malt. Slightly more bitter for a stout than what I was expecting, but an excellent beer. (158 characters)

Black as ink. Hints of coffee. Dark malt character. VERY drinkable. Wouldn't guess by the taste that it's 9%. My wife (not a big fan of stout beers) enjoyed this one. Kind of speaks to the quality of flavor. I will definitely be drinking more of this. (251 characters)

Poured into a dimpled beer mug, pours very dark with small head that is brown. I find this a more astringent beer than most stouts, flavour is stronger than more recently tasted stouts as well. Would recommend for a drink however if have had better stouts, namely stone imperial. (279 characters)

Very opaque, solid black (but like dark roasted coffee where I can coax it thin with sloshing) with fine, frothy head the color of desert mud — light orange mixed with brown. Retains quite well for being poured into a snifter. Smell is primarily boozy, chocolatey sweet, but also roasty and toasty, with twinge of licorice. So far, a very enticing beer. Taste is smokey, meaty, earthy throughout. Dig deeper and you will uncover the cocoa you expected as well as smoke tartness and smoke bitterness. It's highly carbonated, but only gently prickling. Rich and full, a little less smooth than others of the style. Very viscous, sticky, astringent, and warming. Were it not for the bubbles that keep coming back up to wet your whistle, this beer would have an incredibly dry finish. World-class, indeed! (803 characters)

I've been drinking stouts for years ,and this is my favorite by far. My year round goto imperial stout. The alcohol is hidden while the subtle taste of the black strap rises in the background (193 characters)

12 oz. bottle poured into nonic

L: black ... it's so dark that even up to sunlight you can barely see through the edges; beautiful thick tan head of foam, about 1-inch thick and sticking and lacing like paint; a work of art

S: sweet chocolate, maybe prunes, some wood ... charred oak wood ... coffee ... the dark malt notes are fantastic, nothing overly burnt but dark, leaning toward raisins

T: chocolate, coffee, darker fruits -- prunes and raisins ... it leaves a chocolately aftertaste; really meaty red wine (?); there's some good woody notes in here, almost burnt wood, but it's not overly bitter ... the "burnt" is kept in check nicely by the sweetness

F: surprisingly light for such a big-tasting brew; good carbonation; it's not slick or thick like many big stouts ... I love it.

O: this might be the best American-made Russian imperial I've tried, and it's as good as any "big" stout/porter I've tried, barrel-aged or not. it's a full-on assault of dark malt flavor -- nothing is overly burnt or bitter, yet it's not too sweet either. a wonderful beer I've slept on too long, and my new go-to big stout. the fact that it's so easy to get *and* comes in 12 oz. four-packs is greatness. (1,208 characters)

I drank this after having a bottle of Chocolate Sombrero (Clown Shoes). That being said, this one poured motor oil black with an exceptional tan head. Upon pouring, all I can really smell is chocolate, with some faint coffee in the background.

This one is tastes like chocolate, with a little coffee mixed in as well. I can also taste a very roasted flavor. I'll definitely drink this one again if I come across it. (416 characters)

Bottle dated 2/11/15. Cellared for about 3 months. Pours brownish black with a large-sized tan head. Smells of roasted malt and some cocoa. Tastes of strong roasted malt and char. Moderate bitterness. Somewhat thin body and high carbonation for the style. Overall, it's a little one-dimensional, but has great roasted malt presence; very drinkable RIS. (359 characters)

*transferred from previous notes - 1/12/2014*
On tap (nitro) poured into a stemmed tulip. Chocolate and coffee are the most pronounced and immediate aromas, accompanied by a more faint caramel aroma and a distinct ash aroma. A thick, jello-like, tan head (gotta love nitro taps!) sits on a dark, opaque black (maybe brown?) body. The head - of which a half a finger is present throughout - leaves a nice, marble-like lacing. It’s a medium bodied, sticky beer which kicks off with a caramel and dark cherry sweetness that immediately gives way to coffee and dark chocolate bitterness followed, not too long after, by a smokey / ashy finish. After a little while, when it starts to mellow out with warmth, the sweetness is not as pronounced up front, and sticks around a bit longer than just the initial taste. A touch of sourness hides in the background throughout the drink and it leaves a dry smokey, bready mouthfeel behind. Fun complexities in the taste of this one. (971 characters)

On tap, nitro-style, in snifter.
L: creamy light brown head, dark as night
S: mocha, a little boozy.
T: this needs to be warm or all you get is unbalanced booze. It is a strong beer, but a lot of flavors going on. Chocolate, coffee, toffee, dark fruit... What separates this from others is the balance and the mouthfeel. And it's hoppy; you don't sense it until all the other flavors fade and you get an astringency/dryness from the hops.
F: perfect. Thick, coats the mouth and doesn't go away quickly.
O: never had this on tap, only in a bottle. It's good bottled, great on tap. But only if you like this style of imperial stout. (630 characters)

from a single into a Bell's snifter

dark brown/black, viscous, big puffy 2 finger head with great lacing...nose is great, some bitter chocolate, smokey roasted malts...woody and warming, not getting as much complexity on the tongue as I did on the nose, but it's still quite good; doesn't hide the alcohol as well it might, a little boozy. (340 characters)
