12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.
This revered RIS pours pitch black with highlights of brown. There is no light getting through this sucker. Massive, sticky, frothy head of dark khaki foam which leaves massing lacing chunks. This beer does not mess around.
On the nose, a classic RIS profile: A noticeable degree of roast, similar to coffee, and lots of chocolate – dark chocolate, cocoa dust, and maybe some milk chocolate. There's a slight dark fruit note (cherries) and just a whiff, very faintly, of alcohol. Super robust. I'm scared, momma.
Yowza. This is a smooth behemoth. I served this at cellar temp to experience the full flavor. Beginning with a robust roasty note – dark roasted coffee comes to mind – the beer dominates with dark, caramelized flavors into the middle of the palate along with some dark fruit and some earthy hop bitterness on the end. I appreciated finding some hop presence in this compared to most in the RIS style. There is just a smidge of alcohol, so I have the feeling this beer would benefit from additional time in the cellar. A super drinkable RIS though and a great balance in the flavor in the profile.
The mouthfeel, as expected, is heavy with a low carbonation tingle. It finishes with some earthy bitterness as well as notes of espresso and dark roast coffee. There's not much alcohol in the flavor, but it is defnitely noticeable in impact.
If you're looking for a starting point with imperial stouts, start here. With a heavy roast characteristic and nice balance of sweetness and bitterness, this beer is just as good fresh as after it has been cellared for a few years.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a wine glass.
A - Almost jet black with slight ruby tinges coming through at the edges of the glass. Nice 2 fingers of thick creamy tan head.
S - Roasted malts, bitter sweet chocolate, some dark fruits(rasins and plums) a little bit of coffee, and slight alcohol notes. Very nice.
T - Taste is very similar to the nose but I detect more of the bitersweet chocolate and dark fruit in the taste than the nose. Bitter coffee finish on this one.
M - Very nice and creamy on the heavy side. Medium carbonation. So smooth.
O - For the price this is an awesome RIS. It is a sipper though, its so heavy and syrupy yet so good. I think this may become a regular in my fridge.Gets better when it approaches room tempurature.
