500 ML bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada 30th anniversary snifter. Gave it a pretty hard pour and while the liquid was coming out of the bottle it comes out a dark brown and in the thinner portions its almost a cola color. As the beer pools into the bottom of the snifter, a black liquid puddle rises in the glass. There's a nice slightly darker than tan colored head, small bubbles at the bottom and some medium sized bubbles towards the top of the glass. The head itself is pretty thick and provides some decent lacing and glass retention. After a bit there's a skim across the top of the liquid and very slowly turns into a ring around the glass.

Smell is awesome. It's had to have mellowed out a bit over the years so it's at the point where it's not too strong but certainly not too weak, can't imagine how this was when it was fresh. The bourbon really jumps out at you right away. As I said before, a little mellowed out, so it's like a bourbon soaked oak. Hints of vanilla and a blend of over roasted, burned and even some charred malts making a bit of a robust dark chocolate smell, maybe a hint of coffee. It all fuses together quite nicely.

Taste is right on par with the aroma, but actually a bit stronger. The bourbon jumps out in the beginning again. Some nice very, very feintly smokey oak with some coffee grounds, and bitter chocolate. All of those flavors cloaked under some subtle vanilla to balance everything out very nicely. Something about this just tastes like it uses pure ingredients, it's great.

Mouthfeel is about as good as it gets for a barrel aged stout. Has a thin feel to it, but the lingering flavor of the fullest bodied beer. Really maintained a great carbonation level. 11.6% isn't surprising, but at the same time I wouldn't have expected it. Smooth with a warming, on the edges of a hot finish. It's not too hot, but hotter than I expected, the appropriate amount. The drinkability is insane! You don't even need to be a ute beer fan to be able to polish this bad boy off. Slow sipper, but you gotta be carful with it. Love regular Old Rasputin, and love XI even more. See why people like this so much. Thanks Chris for a great trade.

500ml bottle into a snifter.

pours a dark black with almost no head. smell is huge on bourbon , taste is amazingly smooth. bourbon , vanilla, super super smooth holy shit! now, at 5 years old I was skeptical but this is amazing. feel is a legit 5/5. ABV extremely well hidden. full bodied, low carbonation.

overall so so creamy and smooth and delicious. loved it.

If any disappointment in this beer - it is in the fact that the inviting adventure of the name is symptomatic of Big Media hyperbole. The anticipation of pouring a glass of a beer called "OLD RASPUTIN RUSSIAN IMPERIAL STOUT" predicts an experience of mythical proportions. Perhaps of an ancient, mysterious cask unearthed by Siberian archaeologists, transported to a Moscow museum and subsequently stolen and tapped by a couple of Muscovite juveniles looking for a cheap kegger - I certainly see a movie here...albeit Drive-In kwality...

As I BRACE for the first sip, my expectation is RAMPED for anything but the ordinary...I even grab the arm of my beer chair with my other hand...just in case...

No regurgitating release of the cursed dark spirit of Rasputin; no sudden prolific visions of an apocalyptic future; no suddenly alarming alien sensation of an unknown flavor or sensation that is other-worldly...NOT EVEN an unexpected carbonated burp.

*sigh*

How can one NOT be disappointed?

Its, its...JUST a beer.

Admittedly - a good beer BUT still - I expected a whole lot more.

I firstly expect A LOT from anything labeled as a Russian Imperial Stout. These are in a class by themselves - a pinnacle unto themselves. A complex flavor gamut of Siberian hardship a pour that is always expected to be: Heavy, creamy, dark, bitter and smokey with a malty sweetness.

This beer does ALL that.

A = Opaque black; heavy tan head with dissipating lace
S = Malty with a chocolate, bourbon edge
T = Deeply malty with coffee kick
M = creamy, heavy
O = A very nice Imperial Russian Stout

It smells malty like you would expect from an Imperial but you also get a hint of alcohol in the end. Not the sort of Barley-wine, "I'm going to die" alcohol smell, but you can definitely tell it is not something to be slammed.

It pours rich and dark with a slight head but nice lacing as it goes.

Taste is almost chocolate but again hints of alcohol.

Mouthfeel is silky, goes down nicely; just don't drink it too quickly.
