Bottle opned on 2.18.14

A - Pours a motor oil black with a dark tan head that fades very slowly.

S - Lots of barrel and chocolate, then some bourbon hits.

T - Smooth bourbon, lots of oak and chocolate. Nice.

D - Heavy body with good carbonation, silky smooth.

O - Nice balance. A terrific BA stout.

Reviewed form notes 12/15/11, compared side by side to 2011 surly darkness with Mr. Jeffery Abbott!!!

Smells extremely sweet and very boozy, tastes like booze but very, very smooth bourbon flavor to the point tat it almost takes over the stout, Jeff says we are drinking a "stout flavored bourbon." Not a bad thing at all. Very delicious and well rounded almost worth the $22 for a 16.9 oz bottle. As you drink the warmth of the bourbon flavor warms and coats your throat. wow! perfectly delish!

I've let this one sit in the bottle long enough, poured into a snifter

A- pours pitch black with a creamy dark tan head that eventually reduces to leave a ring around the glass, leaving a few patches of lace behind

S- getting a lot of medicinal aromas up front with black licorice, some herbal notes as well. Beyond that, the bourbon is quite noticeable and has a barrel juice aroma with notes of oaky vanilla and dark fruit added in. Underlying sweet chocolate with smoky malt to close it out

T- Chocolate and dark fruit flavors up front with a slightly burnt smoky malt flavor. The bourbon is still alive and well and kicks in around mid-palate, adding some barrel flavors and a kick of spicy vanilla. Big and sweet caramel malt on the finish that almost gives it the finish of a barrel aged scotch ale, more bourbon on the linger

M- medium body with low carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a smooth finish. Given the abv, it could use a little more viscosity, but the alcohol is almost completely hidden, which the aging should have helped

O- The aging process has definitely added a degree of drinkability, as the alcohol is almost completely hidden. I was surprised at how powerful the bourbon flavors still are as it's still a bourbon forward beer. Overall, this didn't blow me away, but its an enjoyable sipper

Appearance: Pours a dark brown with less than a finger of a small dark tan head that settles to a thin coating and ring. In the glass it is black and opaque.

Smell: Chocolate, bourbon, slight astringency, roasted malt.

Taste: Roasted/burnt malt, bourbon, chocolate, caramel. Lots of malt sweetness upfront, which transitions to a roasty, slightly burnt finish and aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel. Carbonation is medium. Booze is hidden well.

Overall: Good barrel aged stout, but nothing mind blowing. Worth picking up to try once, but no need for a repeat purchase. Just stock up on Bourbon County instead.

I had the XV fresh an found it to be excellent but slightly less then expectation. The XIV has had time to age and mellow and gave away more hearty and creamy flavors. The nose gives off a coconut and fudge brownie which moves subtly to the palate. The tongue then takes on a chocolatey mint, fudge and caramel flavor. This moves more into a dessert with all the decadent sweetness and creaminess.

Opened during a Super Bowl bottle share. I've been holding this beer for two years and just decided it was time. Really nice black ale with surprising carbonation. Lots of oak and toasted grains on the nose. This beer aged REALLY WELL. Absolutely no alcohol bite is present. Very smooth and for the ABV this drinks incredibly well! Body was a little too light for my taste on a strong stout. Amazing beer and I still have one left in the cellar. Maybe next super bowl.
