Poured from a 500 ml corked bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice.

Appearance: Pours an oily pitch black with a moderate amount of bubbles. About two fingers of deep tan head that fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing around the glass.

Smell: A big rich whiskey soaked dark malt aroma with lots of deep chocolate and fruit hints. Upfront barrel presence with big hints of bourbon whiskey, sweet vanilla, oak, and wood. Dark roasted barley malts with big hints of dark chocolate, coffee, burnt toast, biscuit, caramel, toffee, nuts, smoke, and yeast. Hints of molasses sweetness. Undertones of dark fruit with hints of dark cherry, plum, raisin, and fig. Very light on hops. Fairly boozy. A very good aroma.

Taste: As big and good as it smells, dark roasted malts with lots of dark chocolate notes and a big barrel presence. Lots of bourbon whiskey taste upfront along with notes of sweet vanilla, wood, and oak. Dark roasted barley malts with a big taste of dark chocolate, coffee beans, burnt toast, biscuit, smoked malt, caramel, toffee, nuts, and yeast. Sweet molasses and slight note of anise spice. Dark fruit undertones with some notes of black cherry, plum, fig, and raisin. Light presence of earthy hops. Very rich and fairly boozy. Very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. very creamy, rich, silky, and somewhat syrupy. Some alcohol heat is felt as expected but its still fairly smooth.

Overall: Another great version of the barrel aged Raspy. Great bourbon barrel flavors blend in well with an already great dark roasty stout.

Pours dark black, no light passes through. Has a two finger mocha head with good retention and lacing for an 11.90 % abv beer. The aroma has Bourbon, chocolate, dark fruit, oak, vanilla, and coconut. Just amazing.

Tastes every bit as great as it smells. There is Bourbon, chocolate, dark fruit, oak, vanilla, coconut, and dark roasted malt. This is a sweet beer, with some bitterness for balance provided by the dark roasted malt. Just superb.

Full bodied, rich, smooth, creamy, and very easy to drink. Mildly carbonated. Even though I can taste the Bourbon, this is not a hot or boozy beer. I suspect that waiting as long as I did to drink this has helped tone down the alcohol heat. A magnificent beer as usual. XV anniversary might be the best version yet.

It's hard for me to feel comfortable giving out 5's for anything, but this earned it in the taste category. Simply amazing. The first thing I noticed was the bourbon aroma, rich and heavy backed by oak, coffee, cherry, vanilla. Smells terrific. Taste is simply glourious, complex and rich. And it gets even better as it warms. Chocolate, hazelnut, smokey wood, and bourbon... the barrel aging really comes through. This would be simply orgasmic after a good aging. One of my new favorites.
