I bought a 4-pack of cans of this at a grocery store in Maui about 3 miles from the brewery.

Beer Facts: 6.0% ABV, 30 IBU's, made with Cascade & Columbus hops.

It begins with a malty-toasted coconut aroma followed with a taste of dark malt, chocolate and hints of coffee. It finishes with flavors of toasted coconut and hoppy spice for balance. The only improvement I would like to see would be making it less "thin bodied" but given where the majority of this stuff is consumed, it is just right.

This brew poured dark black with a fluffy, light cocoa-colored head that lingers, lacing up the glass. The smell of sweet coconut and licorice is prevalent. The taste is thin and tinny, but has a bit of a hoppy aftertaste that is not unpleasant, but it soon disipates into a bitter finish on the tongue. The mouthfeel leaves little to encourage you to hold it in your mouth. Overall, the beer is drinkable, but not great. The coconut and hops kind of battle each other.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine July 2007.

Can says " ... like hot chicks on the beach." Anyhoo, this ro- bust porter is spiced with all-natural hand-toasted coconut.

Pitch-black in color, with milky coffee-colored head
that doesn't seem to retain well. Big chocolate aroma-- rich, powdery and enticing--with soft coconut milk and meat in the back. Medium-bodied, harsh and prickly on the palate, with a mineral bite of carbonation. Initially quite astringent on the palate, with a big roasted and acidic edge that's fairly intense and sharp. Robust as hell. Things smooth out a bit, allowing some malt complexities to shine through, with notes of chocolate and coffee. There's a good dose of sweetness to balance things out, as dots of vanilla and smooth coconut flavors fold into each other. Nutty undertones. Toasty. Hard to discern any real hop character, but there's some herbal notes here and there. A touch of astringency in the drying finish, with some residual sweetness that makes for a smoother ending.

Pretty harsh at first, but as the beer warms, it really opens up and becomes a very tasty brew. The coconut is well-embedded, but not overwhelming, and there's plenty of balance and complexities to keep things interesting. Pairing? Macaroons all the way!

This beer pours dark brown into my 21st Amendment tulip. Minimal brown head dissipates quickly. No lace. Taste a bit tart with chocolate and I assume cocoa nut notes. This porter is enjoyable enough but nothing outstanding.
A solid effort by Maui Brewing.

Brown color with an off-white head that quickly dissipates. Aroma of smoke, coconut, chocolate, and maple syrup. Taste has coconut, chocolate, coffee, and maybe some molasses. Higher than medium carbonation with light body. An interesting beer to try, but I'd like a little more body perhaps. Thanks to marchcow for the sample.

A- dark brown with a thick beige head

S- smells SO good. This beer smells like you are sticking your nose into a can of Almond Joy. One of the best parts of the beer is the smell.

T- Chocolate, vanilla, slight coffee, and toasted coconut. The taste is a very well balanced blend of these flavors. Coincidentally, it also tastes very similar to an Almond Joy. Great beer.

M- Slides down the back of our throat nicely. Couldn't chug it, but wouldn't really want to.

D- I drink 1 or 2 of these every once and a while and I'm as happy as a clam. This isn't really a session beer, but it also doesn't really claim to be. It is a great beer, but maybe on a one can at a time basis.

Serving glass: Poured from can into tall glass.

Appearance: Opaque black that pours a massive tan head that mostly dissipates.

Smell: Coffee and chocolate accented roasted malts with a strong coconut kick.

Taste: The sweet and toasty coconut is very dominant at first but then it deepens with expected chocolate, coffee and bitter hops.

Feel: Moderate carbonation, medium body that is a little lighter than most for the style. Very creamy, with a semi-dry finish.

Drinkability: Overall, this has a lot of flavor. The addition of coconut makes this a surprisingly refreshing Porter. I have edited this review after trying again in January of 2011, when I enjoyed it a lot more.

Wow, it was weird to drink beer this good out of a can. Pours dark brown with a 1 inch thick off-white head. Lovely aroma of roasted malt, vanilla, and coconut. Delicious blend of roasted coffee and hops, then moves into a smoother powdered cocoa, and finishes with a sweet coconut. Very nice.

Pours a nice dark color out of the can and into the glass. There is a pleasantly large, slightly off white, foamy head, which lasts. The smell is a nice mixture of coffee, with slight hints of coconut. A very enjoyable taste, coffee, with a coconut finish. A very nice beer that I would certainly drink again and recommend. Enjoy!

Brown pour, seems to have more clarity or less viscosity than I would have imagined, leaves the tiniest amount of head, off white. Aroma, definitely coconut and coffee it seems, or was that toffee and some woodyness.

Taste, good amount of coconut, not artificially sweetened from what I can tell, holds itself in check. Would have liked a rougher bitter, hoppier edge, but for a summertime porter, I guess smooth is the way to go. Chocolate comes through more down can. Price = ugh, $12 a 6 pack, but it is very drinkable.

Can served in a chilled pint glass

A - A monstrously dark obsidian with just a few photons streaming through with a 2 finger thick fluffy ecru head with excellent retention and great lacing around the whole glass.

S - Coffee, roasted barley, dark chocolate, toasted coconut with moderate pungency.

T - A robust flavor starting with sweet toasted coconut, with a smooth and creamy milkiness, followed by roasted barley, chocolate, espresso beans, malt, and a touch of bitterness, with a smooth, crisp hint of alcohol for the finish.

M - Full body, moderate carbonation, chewy, creamy, and smooth.

O - Really enjoyed this porter, the coconut addition gave it a smoothness you find in many milk stouts and reminded me a bit of Old Rasputin, but this porter is not quite as refined but still excellent in it own right. Can't wait to visit the brewery in a couple weeks in Maui!

One of the best beers out of a can thus far...in fact most of the dark beers I've had out of the can have been amazing. Appears almost pitch black when held toward the light the body has dark brown edges, light tan head foms thick and dwindles quickly...even speckled lacing lines the sides of my pint. Aroma has dark chocolate, creamy tones it a hint of toasted coconut even a touch of kona coffee. Flavor is roasty with fresh coffee, dark chocolate, and toasted coconut very interesting flavorful dark beer probably the best I've had in or out of a can. Awesome porter, really nice blend of flavors colliding, mouthfeel is creamy but ballsy with a good bit of acidity going on with mild natural carbonation. Medium to fuller bodied porter wih coffee grounds lying on the palate. Drinkability overall is joyous when of the hyped beers out there that really really lives up to it. Awesome original take on a classic style this one is just a great base porter that the toasted coconut works well with the whole picture.

All right... more canned goodness, this time from sunny Maui. I hope I get lai'ed.

It pours a porter black with a one finger tan head. Smells like chocolate, coffee and coconut. A lot of coconut actually... more than I thought even though the name of the beer is sort of a giveaway.

Along with the coconut, I get a lot of roasted malt and dark chocolate upon first sip. Pretty much stays true the entire glass. Minimal carbonation and a thin mouthfeel.

You know, this beer is what it is... a coconut inspired porter. No real surprises in store. It's extremely yummy but I don't know if it can shake being a novelty for me. Ah hell, it's good. This mainlander will order some more in the future.

This is my first experience with Maui Brewing Company and would like to search out other offerings.

This beer pours a very dark brown color, with a light brown head. the head fades slowly, leaving a sparce lacing.

This beer has a toasted coconut aroma. Ity smells sweet and malty. It have a very subtle chocolate aroma as well.

This beer tastes much like it smells. A very nice toasted coconut flavor. Very nice. It has a malty sweet flavor as well, mixing in with some coffee.

This beer is crisp and smooth. It leaves a coconut like aftertaste. It is a little highte in carbonation than I would have expected.

This beer would probably make a decent session beer. It is low enough in alcohol. The flavor though may become cloying after a time.

Overall: This was probably the best beer I had while in Hawaii. I am glad to have brought back a few 4 packs, since I have never seen it in the continental US. Great beer, and I will buy it every time I see it.

Had a can while vacationing in Oregon.

a-black color with no head despite an aggressive pour.
s-It smells like I want to drink it. There is a little coconut, less than I expected, in the smell and a strong roasted coffee smell.
t-Full and complex taste that starts with a malty chocolate taste, that tails off into a slight coconut, and finishes with a nice strong coffee.
m/d-Very full bodied beer that leaves a sweet roasty coating in the mouth. Not a real fast drinker, but it is real smooth. Overall a real good beer that is "Like Hot Chicks on the Beach."

Very gorgeous dark chocolate with almond lacing...

Smells of cacao beans...

Tastes like a Porter made for Summertime. A Porter like this could only come from Hawaii. Roasted coconut accents a traditional Porter malt base. Five different roasted malts were used, making a complex beer. Chocolate, caramel, peanuts, coffee, and dark fruits...

As mentioned above, this Porter was made for Summer!

Goes down way easy...easy to savor...easy to guzzle...It's up to you!
