12oz can poured into a Portsmouth goblet.
A - Pours a dark opaque brown, almost black - no light penetration at all. Capped with a thick 2 finger capuccino tan head that linger a good long time. Head eventually recedes leaving a nice, uniform layer of bubbles across the surface of the beer. Good looking porter.
S - Roasty - coffee and dark and milk chocolates. Touches of caramel malt sweetness, and just a hint of coconut. Smells smooth and rich.
T - Roasty and smooth. Silky and creamy. Coconut flavor is definitely present, but in a subtle way. Blends with the coffee and chocolate flavors which are more prominant. Coconut becomes more noticeable as the beer warms in the glass. Mild hop bitterness which only seems to sharpen the edge on the dark, slightly burnt and roasty flavors.
M - Thick, full bodied. Low/medium carbonation that adds a creaminess to the mouthfeel. I'm guessing it is the coconut that causes the nice oily feeling to this beer. It coats the tongue with flavor that lingers well after the swallow. For me, the mouthfeel is quite distinctive and adds to the experience of this beer.
D - Goes down very easily. The 5.7% alcohol does not make its presence known. This beer is very smooth and easy drinking. Could definitely have a few of these in one sitting. Despite the Hawaiian heritage, seems more appropriate to be drinking on a slightly cool night...on 2nd thought - a cool night on the beach - guess the Hawaiian thing works on this one.

I dont get why it says this beer is retired. I just bought a 4-pack at Foodland in Kapolei, Oahu, this morning. The canning date on the bottom says '121913' so its relatively newish. Anyways, just poured into a whiskey glass from my hotel room.
A - pours a black-brown with a thin head that dissipates rather rapidly. Held up to artificial light and does not shine through. Solid darkness.
S - coconuts, rum, deep maltiness, sugarcane. Coconuts are the dominant smell. This beer smells so awesome.
T - as smell influences taste, the above mentioned notes dominated the palate. This is real coconut to me. I let it warm to room temperature (which is about 75 degrees here in Kapolei at 8pm) and the flavors are really enhanced. In addition to the dominant Coconuttiness, toffee, coffee, and dark chocolate notes emerge.
M - light carbonation, which is good for the style. It is also very refreshing and feels lighter than many other porters, which goes hand in hand with the environment here.
O - a beautifully well done beer. I am glad i was able to get my hands on it. I havent seen thison the mainland in a couple of years and had only tried it once before at that. The coconut shines and adds a wonderful element to this beer. Highly rec if you can get it! I will be buying a few more packs to bring home to SF.
