Father Damien Belgian Strong Ale 9% abv

A: deep brown, murky molasses, light carbonation, no lacing

S: smells of deep dark fruit, figs, raisins, dates, red grape skin

T: initial sweetness very syrupy sweet, boysen and blackberry, it feels like a powered up Belgian dubbel.

M: There is medium coating with maple syrup notes. The maltiness expands and overwhelms. I wouldn’t expect the heat from the alcohol to shine through in a 9% beer but, well it is there in a rather unwelcome way.

D: Not drinkable beyond a tulip, plain and simple. This is not a commentary on the genre or style, it just is an unbalanced example. The parts where it shine in nose and fruits are just outweighed by the inherent problems.

Narrative: The mitochondria sighed as he tripped over more errant RNA just left laying around in the cytoplasm, “THESE GOD DAMN RIBOSOMES ACT LIKE THEY ARE THE ONLY PART IN THIS CELL” In truth it wasn’t the RNA left strewn about, it was the endoplasmic reticulum, he knew that it was out of date and needed replacing but he couldn’t spend his limited life keeping up with the cell jonses. Mito just felt like he didn’t produce enough energy, didn’t work hard enough, something was missing. In reality, it was just an oversized nucleus that was ruining the shared space, but he would never dare admit this. “WOULD IT KILL YOU CENTRIOLES TO CLEAN UP A LITTLE BIT!” There was a critical flaw in the cell and it was horribly unbalanced. In time, myosis would rip the world apart and these fleeting moments would be idle ATP in the cytoplasm, but for a moment, Mito knew things would work out.

A: Poured with a small, off-white thin head that disappeared to a thin film quite quickly. Body is a dark brown color that shows off lots of ruby highlights when held to the light, with a clear body.

S: Faint aroma of dark fruit, high sweetness from both this and a dark caramel-sugar type smell. Some definite chocolate notes in there as well.

T: Quite a sweet-tasting brew... not so much dark fruits, although they are there, but a malty-sweetness with chocolate coming through in the end. No real hop flavor or bitterness noted.

M: Medium-bodied, fairly creamy, with average carbonation. Some warmth from the alcohol is there in the finish.

D: A pretty good beer... listed as a Dubbel on their draft board when I was there. Maybe a little too sweet, but still quite nice.

I am glad I got to try this after missing out while I was in Maui when the brewpub was closed, reviewed from notes, color was a darker reddish brown, 1/2 inch soapy off white head that left some nice lace on the top of the glass, smell was made up of toasted malt, cherries, bread, caramel, sweet malt, light dark fruits, and Belgian yeast, flavor was similar to the smell with more sweetness than expected though, there is a nice citrus flavor that shows up in the finish once it warms, other than that it is a lot of sugar and sweet red fruits, mouthfeel was sweet and chewy at times, could have used some more carbonation, seemed a bit syrupy, taste lingered long with a sugar coating too, could not drink much more than a few ounces of this, did not have anything to balance out all the fruit and sugar, filling and definitely a sipper, this was the first Hawaiian Belgian-style beer I can remember trying, worth checking out for that reason alone

I had this one on tap.

Poured a medium and lightly hazy amber color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of burnt sugar, citrus, and fruity. Tastes of the same burnt sugar, citrus, and a little roasty. This one finished on the sweeter side. Interesting and 'different'.
