Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Imperial Coconut Porter is a stronger version of robust porter spiced with all natural toasted coconut. It is black in color and crowned with a creamy, dark tan head. It begins with a malty-toasted-coconut aroma followed by a rich, silky mouthfeel with tastes of dark malt, chocolate, and hints of coffee. TCHO cocoa nibs were blended with the toasted coconut during the maturation process to intensify the aroma of coconut and dark chocolate.

S- smells like cocoa and coffee with some roasty quality. smells awesome.

T- Taste great like chocolate coffee.

M- nice medium body that goes down nice and easy.

O- awesome one off, really glad i got to try this rarity.

Poured from a 12oz can into a Samuel Adams perfect pint glass. Thanks to my buddy Chris for bringing this back from the Mountain Brewers Beer Fest.

A: Deep deep brown color...no light shines through it. Mildly aggressive pour leads to a wild 2 finger, root-beer-float colored head that slooowly disappears. Lacing is consistently but sporadically present throughout.

S: First thing on the nose is chocolate followed by toasted dark malts and coffee. Coconut is faint but definitely present.

T: Taste follows the nose for the most part but I definitely pick up notes of molasses in this one too. The coconut is also more prevalent here than in the nose but the delicious coffee and cocoa flavors that were so up front in the smell were just as up front here but added a sense of bitterness that was welcomed. Not sure if the bitterness was from the hops or from the cocoa. Either way, delicious balance. Alcohol is hidden in the taste very nicely.

M: Medium bodied, lightly carbonated, has the feel of a milk stout almost with the creamy coating it presents. No heat from the ~8% abv to speak of. Thick mouth coat leaves a nice bitter aftertaste that makes me take a moment to enjoy before going back for more.

O: Is my favorite porter at this point by far. Complete, delicious, balanced, sweet, bitter. What an absolute treat to be able to drink this beer. I suggest you get your hands on it at the first chance you get.

A - Looks great; has that classic, thick, liquified coal look to it. Healthy mocha-foam head. Slick, black and oily.

S - Sweet desiccated coconut on the nose is a delight. Sweeter than the standard version. Coconut macaroon, char, and a little bourbon.

T- Tasts pretty much on point for a porter, although I find the abv. to be far too apparent which unfortunately masks the coconut. A little hot and boozy. Less roasted and toasted flavours, more bourbon and molasses. Dark rum on the finish.

M - Nice thickness but just a shade harsh on the tongue, perhaps due to the prominent abv. A little oily.

O - This beer looked great and smelled great but fell down when it ramped up the alcohol without ramping up the flavour and mouthfeel to match. Lacks balance. I tend to find Maui Brewing Companies beer's just a little disappointing, and the same is true of this one. I was hoping for a beer which really builds on the CoCoNut Porter, resulting in a beer with heavier mouthfeel, stronger coconut flavours and stronger roasty-toasty flavours as well. This beer doesn't quite achieve that.

On tap at the Holy Grail Pub

A: Pours a deep dark brown with a nice brown head that fades to a ring and leaves some lacing on the glass.

S: The nose is amazingly rich and full of chocolate, vanilla, toasted coconut, and a bit of coffee.

T: The taste follows the nose pretty closely. The coconut is much more prominent than the original version and the chocolate/cocoa is much better.

M: The feel is on the fuller side of medium bodied with a nice finish.

O: This was what I expected the original version to taste like. Big rich aromas and flavors with a great mouthfeel. Excellent stuff and highly recommended.

Poured near-black with two fingers of mocha head. Big chocolate aroma with some mild roast, sweet caramel, and a touch of toasted coconut.

Slightly low carbonation and a smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Sweet chocolate and caramel up front, hints of coconut and coffee, and slightly bitter dark cocoa on the finish.

Nice balance -- sweet without being cloying. Maybe a side-by-side would be more revealing, but I didn't find this to be very different from Maui's standard coconut porter...maybe just a little more chocolate sweetness and a bit more boozy warmth.

On tap at Maui Brewing Company in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii.

Pours an opaque black with a 1 inch foamy khaki head that fades to nothing. Thin streaks of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, and some toasted coconut aromas. Taste is of dark roasted malt, bitter cocoa nibs, and toasted coconut. There is a nice roasty bitterness that lingers on the palate after each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp yet smooth mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good porter that I like more than the CoCoNut Porter that is put in cans.

On tap at Stone's 15th Anniversary

A: Black with a thin tan head.

S: Earth, cedar, roasted malt, dark chocolate and a hint of coconut as it warms.

T: Roasted malt and dark chocolate with a touch of wet earth. Similar to the regular version, I didn't get a whole lot of coconut in this. That said, I liked this one way better than the original.

Ontap
Pours a deep black with a light tan head that lasts. The smell is coffee, roasted malt, and chocolate. The taste is prominantly a toasted malt, coffee, a pleasant bitterness, and the slightest hint of coconut in the finish. Medium mouthfeel with good carbonation. It's a good beer but not leaps and bounds above regular coconut porter. Regardless I would be glad to have this again.

On tap at O'Brien's. Pint glass.

A: Pours black, somewhat viscous, with a decent sized cap of stone colored head, quickly dissipating to a ring. Minimal lacing.

S: Big melted dark chocolate, roasted malt, both well integrated. A little smoke.

T: This tastes like straight up dark chocolate. There's also some cocoa, roasted malt, and toasted coconut. Very dry. Finish is a nice bittersweet chocolate. Overall, very chocolatey and delicious.

M: Smooth yet kind of chewy/grainy (from the chocolate), medium-light carbonation and medium-full body.

O: Super tasty and exceedingly drinkable, perhaps the chocolatey-ness being the limiting factor (depending on your preference). This is basically coconut porter on steroids: both the chocolate and coconut come through a lot more, but still maintaining a nice balance.

On tap at URGE.

A: Black, impenetrable, ominous,
and foreboding is the body. An inch of tan cream crowns the ebony elixir. It looks inviting yet dangerous.

S: Aromatic dark chocolate with well integrated coconut and a moderate roasted malt presence. The chocolate borders on fudge. Molasses is light, and there's a restrained nuttiness. Excellent.

T: Rich dark chocolate is abundant, with a lower moderate earthy bitterness. Roasted malt accompanies black strap molasses. The 7.9% is completely hidden. Sounds like a good Porter, doesn't it? Add in the coconut and you have a delicious porter. The dark chocolate-coconut combo is fantastic. Coffee is very faint.

M: Full body with upper moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is chewy, creamy sticky, and smooth.

Overall: A step up from the regular coconut porter. Really nice stuff.

On tap at the Draught House in Austin.

The beer pours a dark brown to black color with a brown head. The aroma is very strong and is full of sweet, milk chocolate. I also get a little bit of coconut but the chocolate is what stands out. The flavor is more of the same. The chocolate overpowers all of the other flavors. Very sweet overall. The alcohol is well hidden. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very nice take on the regular Coconut Porter. Definitely one to try if you get a chance.

A wonderful brew that takes Maui's ever popular Coconut Poter up a notch. The addition of Cocoa Nibs in the brewing process really gives a nice compliment to the toasted coconut notes that already exist in the beer. Rich, thick, dark brown head that reminds of chocolate ice cream. A smooth, coffee like finish with that touch of coconut and chocolate that I was hoping for. Tasted twice with consistent notes.
