Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a cloudy mahogany brown amber. Tall two finger off-white head that dissipated over a few minutes to a thin head with light patchy lacing. Unusual aroma of tropical and unidentified fruit and a bit of vegetable soup, tart sweetness. Flavor of tart fruit with passion fruit dominating, cherry, orange, turning a bit medicinal and astringent in the middle and finish. Finish is particularly tart and astringent. The fruit mixture was somewhat off-putting at first taste, but I have to admit that it grew on me as I drank this ale. Unfortunately, the finish was a bit unbalanced, but did have a grassy/hay quality that I also grew to appreciate in the end. Light to medium bodied. An interesting experiment that ended up just a bit to unbalanced. A bit more malt body could have improved the finish to allow appreciation of the interesting fruits. Truly glad I tried it because it is unique and interesting, but probably not a repeat.

Poured from 12oz can into a tulip.

Appearance: murky light-brown hue with tons of haze and plenty of effervescence. Head is a thick finger of frothy tan foam with a bit of an orange cast. I rather like it.

Smell: somewhat biscuity malt flavor with an earthy fruitiness. The passionfruit is way more prevalent than the cherry here. I don't get much wild ale character, but as a passionfruit beer it's not too bad.

Taste: biscuity malt with some mild sourness through the middle and a bit of a muddy finish. The passionfruit is discernible but, again, the cherries really aren't so much. I feel like this beer really could have gone somewhere, but it's kind of plain and boring (though not actually bad).

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and a moderate creaminess. It's OK.

Overall: I'm just not a fan of this beer. It is drinkable, and I will finish this, but I feel like there are a lot of missed opportunities here and the end result is just ... boring.

Big thanks goes out to micstache for this one as an extra in a recent trade! Served from can into a Mikkeller oversized wine glass. Poured a deep red-orange with a half finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, earth, wheat, grain, subtle fruit, and must. The flavor was of sweet malt, fruit, wheat, grain, cherry, and metallic. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty average brew. If I’m honest I’m not really sure what Maui or Jolly Pumpkin was going for on this one. There was a lot going on, but why was it all together in the first place is the question I ask you… The musty aroma and metallic flavor however were the killers of this one. While it was drinkable, it wasn’t the most enjoyable brew out there, but I’m glad I got the chance to try it at least.

Can that I stole from Mike.

Mildly murky muddy brown, there's a dense, beige head that falls off to a ring rapidly. The nose is rather disappointing. Rather noticeably hoppy with Cascade hops, there's a nondescript fruitiness present. Crystal malt is present by the boatload. I can't say I get any passionfruit on the nose.

The palate opens rather terrible with a chalky bitterness, a tannic fruitiness and a tartness that's mellow. It then gets worse with an astringent crystal malt backbone that manages to be watery and still tannic and chalky. Mild dried sour cherry flavor is present. Medium-light in body and highly carbonated, this beer is quite terrible.

Pours a hazy reddish to orange-ish color with a tan head. In the aroma, dryer dark fruit with some bigger cherry notes. In the taste, a dry dark cherry, and a mellow malt. A small bite and a medium to bigger bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry cherry skin aftertaste. Nice, dry cherries. I bet it would be better if it was a wild yeast used.

Can to Sobrehumano glass
12oz Can

App- Ruddy looking brown, amber, red color with a nice 1-1/2 in tan head. Fast receding without lace or cling. A bit of a deep cordial look when its towards the bottom.

Smell- A weird nose on this one. Went for a deep cherry malty, lambic thing. Kinda works with the addition of the malts. Has a certain floral fullness to it.

Taste- Its okay. From reviews I read I fiqured as much about this. Still an amber ale with that full malt backbone without the bitter hops, but replaced by the semi-tart dry cherry flavors.

Mouth- A lighter body with a light medium carbonation. Weird cherry dry after taste. Couldve been more full.

Drink- Expected more, but got what this is. Just an Amber with some fruit. Hopefully can try the JP version.

A - Pours a cloudy amber-brown color with a finger of frothy tannish head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of sweet light toasted caramel malts with some sweet cherries, some tropical and citrus hops, passion fruit, and a bit of bready malts.

T - Starts off with some sweet cherries and some sweet caramel malts with some tropical hops. Through the middle, some more bready malts come through with more citrus and tropical hop flavor and some passion fruit. The finish is a mix of sweet caramel malts, with some tropical fruits, cherries, and some light bready malts.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a sweet and fruity finish.

D - Very drinkable. Nice fruity red amber ale. Not quite perfectly balanced, but the blend of amber ale and tropical fruits works fairly well.

12 oz can. Pours hazy reddish amber with a smallish creamy off white head that retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet malts and some fruits (cherry).

The flavor is a little sweet acidic cherry and tropical fruit with a weird medicinal leathery finish. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, it's a bit subdued but a decent fruit beer.

12oz can, No date on the bottom.
Unmarked tulip glass

A: Pours out a cloudy orangish amber red color. Initially about a finger of off white head formed. Faded quickly. There are lots of tiny bubbles coming up the sides of the glass.

S: Smelled this as soon as I opened it. Up front I smell roasted notes. Maybe some coffee hints actually. Underneath I am pulling some of that cherry sweetness. Maybe the passion fruit as well.

T: Up front, you get some of the tartness from the cherries. In the middle, you get some more of the malt bill. More of the red ale is coming out. Toasted grains. Maybe a touch of roast coffee. On the close, it's fairly dry.

M: Medium bodied. Carbonation faded after a while.

O: C+/B- I want to try the other JP version that is more sour.

This collaboration between Maui Brewing Co. and Jolly Pumpkin is Maui’s first to be released in cans. It’s brewed with cherries from Michigan and Hawaiian passion fruit. Poured into a tulip.

Murky, rusty brown. It looked clear coming from the can, but once in the glass the liquid congealed to this muck. One finger of fuzzy tan head pops away after a minute, leaving behind a thin ring.

The passion fruit comes through the nose in a big way, followed closely by tart cherries and a weird, pee-like funk. Cheesy hops, a little toast, a touch of lemon peel. Really hard to get away from that pee smell.

The flavor, thankfully, has dropped the pee, but it’s also too soft for my tastes. Caramel, toast, passion fruit and a touch of sweet cherry. The lightest hint of tartness.

Light, prickly carbonation in a nicely thick medium body. Not much booze at all.

I like the idea here, just not the execution. Weird in aroma, light in flavor.
