For a beer called "Irish Death", this is awfully close to a Scotch Ale. It's very sweet and very malty. The hops are mostly hidden. I couldn't really decide whether I liked it or not. I'd take a drink, and think "too sweet". Then I'd come back to it 10 minutes later, take another drink, and think, "no that's pretty tasty." I split the bottle over two nights, and was never tempted to drink it too quickly. If you like sweet malty beers, this might be just the ticket for you. I do expect most American Strong Ales to be more complex than this.

A favorite of mine for years, my go-to fall-winter ale. Sweet, but light in body so it's not sickeningly sweet. Chocolate, coffee, and malt flavors, not bitter at all. Perfect abv at 7.8% with no alcohol bite. Very good.

Had this bought for me here at Top Hat as I never had anything from Iron Horse before. Lots to like here from the get-go as the bartender said that this was a Porter. Even though it wasn’t, it’s easy to consider this one given the notes and appearance of this beer as this easily deserved its ranking on here, among American Strong Ales.
This poured a dark mahogany with a tan, frothy head that was was fully appealing. Beautiful, extensive rings of lacing remained as I worked my way through this as the head never fully settled. Plum, cherry, fig, and some roasted notes were in the nose as the taste was full of syrup, coffee, roasted barley, molasses, and bitter chocolate. A bit thin in consistency and balanced on the palate, this could have been easily mistaken for an Imperial Irish Dry Stout, if one existed.
Enough alcohol was in this, as it was on par with the flavors present, as this felt medicinal without the overt syrupy sweetness. Nice job by Iron Horse on this offering as it was worthy of being the darkest beer on tap at this bar!

Pours chocolate brown with nice foamy crown on draught. Smooth, sweet, silky with notes of Irish stout - really great string ale at The Hanger on draught in Juneau - cheers to vacation mode.
Then again at the Arctic Bar in Ketchikan, good stout with a kick!

Got in a BIF from snaotheus. 16 ounce can into tulip glass, no can dating. Pours clear very dark red/brown color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing and moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas and flavors of big caramel, brown sugar, brown bread/crust, toast, nuttiness, wood, herbal, grass, pepper, pine; lighter notes of cocoa, coffee, raisin, fig, date, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Moderate pine, herbal, woody, spicy, roasted bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; creamy/bready malts, some sticky hops, and light chalky roast in the mouthfeel. Slight lingering resins and long lingering bitter/roast drying finish, no cloying/acrid/astringent flavors. Minimal warming alcohol of 7.8%. As indicated by the name this is basically just an imperial Irish red. Nice rich malt complexity, with balanced earthy hops, and restrained fruity Irish yeast complexity. No complaints.

12 OZ can. Canned 1/12/22. Poured into a pint glass
Black cola body with red highlights. Tan head. Good retention and lacing
Malt forward with plum and cherry notes
Taste follows with a slightly boozy medicinal cherry finish
Round yet slightly prickly feel on the finish reveals an interesting carbonation level.
I was very surprised to see that I hadn't rated this one yet. (So I'm fixing that now.) I've been drinking Irish death for years. I remember years ago when it was only available in draft. It still is often the only "dark beer" available on tap in many bars in Washington state, And a worthy choice.

One thing for sure, as the label says, it defies labels. Sometimes that's a good thing because you get an awesomely unique beer. But in this case, I'm not really sure what I got. Basically what stands out is thin and sweet. I'm sure this brew has its fans, I'm just not one of them.

Look: Pitch black on the pour and a deep rub red when held to light with a generous off-white head that slowly settles to a nitro-looking pillow and leaves nice lacing on the glass
Aroma: Warm brown bread, toffee, melanoidin, dried dark fruit, and light wafts of blackstrap molasses
Taste: Toffee and dried dark fruit get the party started before a huge wave of sweet and bready malt crashes in to join. Some earthiness comes through in the middle and shines alongside molasses and some melanoidin before bread and dark fruit close it out
Mouthfeel: Full, silky smooth – almost creamy, medium-high carbonation, and very smooth and soft on the finish with zero hints of the high alcohol content
Overall: This is delicious stuff. I can’t believe I’ve never pulled the trigger on this as I’ve seen it several times over the last couple years but I’m glad I now finally have and will definitely be getting it into the rotation. Super smooth and malty throughout with a little earthiness to keep it from being too heavy or sweet and hides the 7.8% ABV extremely well. Tasty and recommended
