Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a 12 oz. mug (notes from 8/14/11):

A - Poured very murky dark brown, with 1-finger light tan/beige foamy head. Very good retention, and moderate thin lacing. Shines deep orange when hed up to the light.

S - Sharp piney hop with a warmth to it, balanced by strong dark, moderately toasty malt. Transitions to moderate unsweetened chocolate, with hints of molasses, light hazelnut, and toasty vanilla.

T - Piney/floral hop at first that flashes to dark malt sweeteness and moderately strong hop bitterness immediately. Flows into a complex light toasty/bready profile with chocolate, hazelnut, more toast, and crumbled bacon. Mild bitterness takes over from there, with chocolatey malt to finish, and a flash of paprika at the very end. Aftertaste of coffee, chocolate, and bready malt.

M - Medium body, slightly creamy with a fluid roundness and refreshing. Spritzy carbonation plays at the front of tongue and lingers through the profile. The paprika note creates a lingering and mild spicy non-boozy warmth.

D - Outstanding! This is probably one of the better black IPAs/CDAs I've had to date! It's missing some of the pine hop in the nose and bitterness in the flavor that one would expect of an IPA. However, the complexity of the "black" side of Ironhorse's Black IPA is utterly fantastic. The toasty breadiness, coffee, chocolate, and flash of spice was great.

Grabbed a bottle a bit ago at By The Bottle here in the couve.

- Poured a nice murky dark brown.. lovely light off-white head with lace all about... couple of fingers of foam down to a sheet on top.

- Very fresh, brown-sugary light water... hidden subtle bready grain.. light grassy hop notes.

- Light cocoa.. bready grain, sweet flare towards the end. Touch of light coffee notes. Grassy hops, early bitter pine, and zesty spicy hops to balance. Smokey notes as well. Wondering if there is some smoked malts in this one.

- Nice creamy think and carbonated feel.. really well carbonated, and feels great in the mouth (get your head out of the gutter). Light chewiness.. slightly drying.

- Overall this is a very unique and well made brew. i find most CDA's hide the smell in their velvet blankets of goodness. A style which I loved from the start, and one that many brewers continue to do very well with such as this one.

Poured from a growler into a pint glass.
Pours a deep brown color almost black with a 1 finger tan head.

S the nose first hits you with some sweetness followed with some citrus hops.

T the taste starts some coffee and roasted malt. It then follows up with pine from the hops. But there is really not much else here.

M the beers mouthfeel has a nice medium body.

Overall this is a pretty good beer. It's a nice combination of an ipa with some nice roasted malt flavors to compliment the hops. a good choice if you find yourself in central washington.

22 oz. bottle from 99 Bottles, Federal Way, WA, poured into Delirium Tremens tulip 3.25.11.

One finger brown head over dark brown/black opaque body, no visible carbonation, medium dissipation with minimal lacing. Piney hops and some roasted malt dominate the nose. Taste mirrors nose, not really complex but a good dose of pine and citrus hops keeps it interesting, the roasted malt was subsumed by the hop presence. Mouthfeel was a bit watery IMO, minimal effervescence. Lacking in the complexity of better PNW CDAs but the price is right about $4 a bomber. Worth a try.
