Pours a finger and half of head on a hazy dark straw body.
The aroma is deep, dark grain, copper and forest.
The taste is moderately bitter, a big malt profile but not sweet.
The texture is thicker.
A big malty and hoppy beer, and quite drinkable.

Aroma of sweet malt backed by bitter pine, well balanced. Taste follows. Sumptuous honey-bread followed by an immediate wave of refreshing pine, with a body that's smooth but slick and enjoyable. Good red!

Look: Dark ruby red and looks even darker in the glass with a nice-looking beige head that slowly settles to a lid, leaving sticky lacing behind
Aroma: Pine sap, fir needles, grapefruit, toffee, warm brown bread, caramel, spicy hop notes, and earthiness
Taste: Citrus fruits, conifers, and caramel kick it off as spicy and earthy hops trickle into the mix. Rich bready and doughy notes shine in the middle as the initial hop punch fades and finishes with more citrus and conifer notes along with a bite
Mouthfeel: Full, slightly chewy and slick, medium-high carbonation, and medium strength dryness on the finish
Overall: This is good stuff. I’ll admit I’m a homer for this hybrid style (IRA/Red IPA) so am definitely biased but this offering is very tasty and exactly what I love about the style. Rich caramel and toffee notes, lots of dark malt flavor/aroma, and typically an old-school citrus/conifer hop bill along with a good bite and dry finish – and this one fits the bill well. Recommended

A very nice red ale. Pours dark amber, tan head. Nose is subtle citrus toffee. Taste of caramel with grapefruit on top. A hop forward red ale is what I like to think of this tasty beer. Will look forward to another glass..

On tap in Boise.
Light amber color with good clarity and a head that sticks around for days.
More hoppy than I was expecting, with that coppery malt backbone that you come to expect from an Amber - I get grapefruit, caramel, toffee, citrus pith.
Candied grapefruit and a nice bready caramel malt backbone delivers moderate bitterness (for an Amber) and delicious sweet malt notes, without being cloying.
Medium mouthfeel, slightly drying, soft carbonation.
A very decent Amber, which isn’t my favorite style. Nicely done.

just my second beer from these guys after their widely popular irish death. this is a hoppy strong red, real dark in complexion, a brick red looking beer in the pint glass, dark enough to not really be able to tell if its clear or hazy, but it has a big frothy khaki head on it and a really cool aroma of kilned red malts, not nearly as sweet as it looks and sounds on paper like it should be, and interestingly multidimensional, with some piney hops and even an appreciable english sort of ale yeast character, lots going on in this very robust red! the malt is awesome in here, a style i dont usually love, but there is great depth to it here, its earthy and fire roasted sort of tasting, oddly dry, without the usual toffee and caramel complexion, which i appreciate. warming and wintery to me, especially with the piney hops that rise up about half way through. notes of bran, dried apple, and even wet wood to it, a neat richness in the absence of much residual sugar, and the bitter finish is cool in here too, almost more of a red ipa. i didnt expect to like this so much because i didnt expect it to be so unique, kind of like the irish death in that its a tough one to put in a style category, but is delicious. a little heavy to drink all day, but a really tasty pint! these guys have my attention now...

How is this not rated higher. I love you ok forward to this seasonal every year. If you like red ales and IPAs, it's a perfect hybrid.

Thanks Beth.
This was poured into a becher pint glass.
The appearance was a ruggedly dark amber color with a sheet of white foamy head softly dissipating to leave some mellow stringy lace.
The aroma had a very nice blend of citrusy and piney hops coating some clean caramel to toffee malts. Subtle biscuity/toast tones.
The flavor mildly leads with the bittersweet hops, sweet pine and a soft bitter citrus rind. Good portion of malts for balance. Moderate aftertaste of sweet piney hops, stifled biscuity toffee/caramel malts.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping to sessionable quality about it. Carbonation felt spot on with an appropriate ABV. Well blended finish of citrusy and piney hops to malts.
Overall, a well crafted imperial red ale. I'd do this one again.
