vibe: 4.5 | quality: 3.75 | service: 4.25 | selection: 3.75

one of the older billings breweries, and a very blue collar place. an old warehouse converted to brewhouse and distillery, but state law mandates their separation under the same roof. bar in the book, tinny walls, a stage for live music which they have real frequently, and some outside seating on old cable wheels. my first problem with the place was the cover charge for music, which doesnt start until later on in the evening, but even showing up early for just a beer isn't permitted without paying the cover (10 bucks!). it was enough to keep me from even going in last visit, but i couldn't resist this time. i stuck around long enough to hear a cool family band from new orleans, but its still a steep penny. 7 or 8 beers on, all passable, nothing world class. the owner and head brewer is a bit of a space case from my brief conversation with him, but the rest of the staff was ultra friendly and personable. i liked the huckleberry hefeweizen quite a bit. all the other beers were kind of just okay, a step or even two below the quality being offered up elsewhere in town. basic styles too, wheats and lagers and things. a black ale was very distinct, as was a rye pale ale, but they all seemed to have some common element, almost extracty, cheap or weird or something, maybe freshness? i don't know, dirty lines? all speculation at this point. liked the vibe though, cool crowd, down to earth, and a fun place to spend an afternoon sipping brews.

edit: thought this was more of a summer place, with the outside seating and all, but its even better in winter. a big heater running the length of the ceiling and dim lighting set the mood for mellow acoustic music and one of the coolest brewery vibes i have enjoyed in a long time, and the beers seem to have improved since my last visit. this weekend was awesome up here, cant wait to go back now. night and day from first visit. boosted some scores to reflect most recent trip.
