My girlfriend and I noticed this place as we were sat outside Den Engel..you could blow a feather between these pubs! We went in to try it out and tick it off our list.

We were were in two minds about whether to stay because the selection was pretty poor but the prompt, friendly service of the barman persuaded us to try a couple of La Chouffe on tap which were refreshing and light but by no means our favourite beers of the trip.

It was a nice place though, definitely worth a quick stop because the food did look really good!

De Zeven Schaken is a restaurant and bar just off one corner of the Grote Markt in Antwerp. As you enter, the bar is off to the left with a mirror behind, and it seats about 8-10 on stools but with standing room as well. There is a dining room with tables in front of the bar area, and there is another dining room in the back, up a step.

They had 5-6 beers on-tap and perhaps 6 or more beers in bottles. The selection is not huge, especially by Antwerp standards, but it suffices for this restaurant. The beer I recall having here was a St. Louis Kriek on-tap.

The food menu is good with pastas, steaks, stews, and some game offered. I had a wild hare stew which was very tasty.

The service was good, if not overly enthusiastic, and I visited on a very hectic Sunday evening around 6 pm.

Worth a stop if you are making the rounds in Antwerp.

The first time I visited this place in 2003 it was just an expensive tourist trap. Now under new management (2005) I think it is much improved. The range is better (it now includes Boon Oude Gueuze as well as more predictable fare) and the prices are a good deal less. There's a pleasant atmosphere and friendly owners and staff, who used to run the 'In de Gloria' a hundred yards or so to the north in Kleine Koraalberg before they traded up. I haven't tried the food there yet. It's centrally located, in the Grote Markt just to the north of the town hall building, the other side of the street from the Engel (which I think is expensive and noisy).
