Bottle purchased 6/9/2012 at Dépanneur Peluso in Montréal during the Mondial de la Bière. Sampled 7/20/2012.

Appearance: Pours a deep garnet brown into my Hennepin chalice, three fingers foam, receding into light lacing which remained in place as I drank my way down.

Aroma: Nose is spicy but curiously so; no hop aroma, instead more of a pine forest/incense blend.

Taste: spicy, piney, malty but not sweet. Fine bitterness at the back end. Medium mouthfeel.

Overall: A fantastic herbed/spiced brew, similar to sahti but a bit more subtle. I would definitely buy more of this next time I’m in Montréal, or better yet, sitting right at the bar in their brewpub on Les Iles de la Madelaine!

Recently I discovered a pretty awesome brewing endeavor involving 12 Quebec microbreweries - It's called Annedd'ale. Basically Annedd'ale is a beer brewed with shoots of balsam fir trees, giving a sort of spruce beer essence to the beer's profile. Annedda means tree of life, and it's the tree that Jacques Cartier and his crew supposedly used to cure scurvy in 1535. The idea here was to brew an completely original Quebec beer, and essentially creating a brand new style of beer entirely. This is the first i am trying the style, so I'm excited.

It pours out a beautiful chestnut brown color with a massive four finger head.Nice aromas of hops, mixed with tree sap, and little yeast funk. There are also some nutty roasted elements in there too - really Smells delicious.

Flavor is a little lighter then I thought considering the nose, there is some sourness and tartness mixed with a sort of spicy pine flavor. Hops are only slightly present with minimal bitterness. It has a great, frothy, well carbonated body complimented the style nicely.

It's hard to pin point the flavors in this as is a completely new style. It's got great subtly - I was expecting either a huge sappy tree presence or hardly any at all. It really complimented the hop aromas nicely, as if it was some new variety altogether. In trying to pinpoint the taste and aromas, I was first unable to recognize the familiarity that was there the whole time. It finally hit me, I was brought back to my childhood - the memories of breaking pine cones or squeezing sap between my fingers. That smell lingered for hours, stuck to everything.

This was a fantastic beer and I'm super excited to try more from other Quebec breweries.

This is a beer on which the Quebec microbrew crews are trying to develop a new beer style which would be typical of Quebec. Good luck to them, its a nice project and probably quite difficult.

Wow... the color is dark brown. I was expecting something like copper color. Rereading the label so that I'm reviewing the right beer! The head is thin, made of big bubbles and sticks well to the glass.

The aroma is light and shows notes of fir with some menthol... strange. Nice aroma but strange. The taste is bigger than the aroma. The fir is quite present, maybe too much, which makes this beer not balanced. Carbonation is present in the mouth and it feels a little bit thin. Overall not bad, but not very great. I prefer the version made by Microbrasserie Le Naufrageur. Nice try anyway.

Bottle: Poured a dark copper color with a large foamy head with good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma consists of fir and deep caramel malt with some dry undertones. Taste is also dominated by fir notes with a solid dry caramel malt backbone. Body is quite full with good carbonation. This is a strange one with fir notes really evolving as the temperature of the beer increase. I kind of liked the experience thought not sure this is something I would drink in large quantities.
