Dark brown reddish color with a thick beige head with eternal retention and leaving a curtain of laces.
Light aroma of milk chocolate, mildly lactic.
Surprising delicious flavor, predominantly nutty and malty, very light on earthy hops with hints of yeast. Dry and mild bitter aftertaste.
Light to medium body with low carbonation and a velvet sensation.
With a 2.8% abv and that flavor and texture, I see no reason not to substitute my cold milk chocolate morning beverage.

Sampled on Tap at the Albion Inn, Wakefield, England on 4-6-04.

Served from a Dark Blue Samuel Smith box shaped Keg Font –
i.e. Brewery Conditioned (*NOT* Cask)
Served via CO2 Top Pressure Dispense.

Imperial Pint, served in a Straight Sided Glass – Cost £1.18

***

Appearance: Served in a straight-sided Imperial Pint Glass, the body has a brown chestnut color with a dark appearance when poorly lit. Backlit it has a light walnut body that is perfectly clear. Light tan head sits nicely atop this Dark Mild. Solid carbonation, thanks in no part to the fact that it is a Keg Beer (therefore Brewery Conditioned) and served with Carbon Dioxide on Top Pressure. Decent ‘Northern England Pint of Mild’ appearance.

Nose: Pretty light on the nose, light toasted malts with a hint of dark chocolate. Restrained aromas, but nevertheless, very Mild in character.

Taste: Decent malt profile with some hop bitterness in the middle. Smooth and light on the tongue it finishes with a short-lived malt-bitter ending that begs you to quaff the next mouthful as soon as possible, especially if it’s warm outside. A great thirst quencher.

Mouthfeel: If I was rude, I would say it was thin – but as a Yorkshireman and Mild Drinker I can honestly say that it is everything that I expect from a 3.5% Mild. Light but easily quaffable, and certainly not taxing on the mouth, or stomach, and definitely not filling. It’s an easy “Gallon at Lunchtime and still walk home” beer for sure.

Drinkability: Incredibly quaffable, the smooth feel and malt laden light body with the delicate hop bitterness and the merest hint of chocolate at times makes for a truly great Session beer for those that can handle a Gallon of beer in one sitting.

Overall: Great value for a start, and popular with Lunchtime workers I noted, who seemed to enjoy 2 or 3 pints in their 1 hour lunchtime with little effort or worry that they would not complete their afternoon duties for their respective employers. Goes down equally well with a Warm Meal, Cold Sandwich, a Packet of Salt & Vinegar Crisps, or just simply - on its own, Au Naturelle!

A quality Dark Mild - but I have to say that it is such a shame that this is only available in Keg format. It is not available Cask-Conditioned, from which I believe it would benefit strongly in the mouthfeel and taste departments a little more. Oh well !
