Aroma- fresh cut apples, yellow raisins, and seriously...radish. Very fresh and appealing. Very faint oxidative note if you look for it but hides well behind the more in-your-face nose salad. overall very appealing aroma.

Appearance- Lively carbonation, big creamy head with excellent retention, and poor clarity are all unexpected for the style. ruddy maple color. Once again, unusual for old ale, but appealing none the less.

Taste and mouthfeel - Quite sherry-like. Heavy malt sweetness draws flavor sensations to the tip of the tounge but solventy alcohol carries grassy hop flavor into the nose, making both disharmony and distraction. Sam Smith's trademark acetylaldehyde ester (usually endearing in my book) is not helping the situation and becomes rather shrill at this ABV. If you you can clear your mind of all this and force some beer to the mid palate, you can glean some notes of pear and a very thin caramel tone, but it is kind of lost in the mess. Medium-full bodied with high levels of carbonation but you won't notice that with astringent, even tannic, dryness bludgeoning your entire mouth through the painfully long finish and aftertaste. Yikes.

Overall- This is like somebody's first high ABV homebrew. I am usually a big fan of this brewery and the old ale style so I was really psyched when I finally got my hands on a bottle and paid pretty handsomely for it. I was ready to love this brew all night long but most of it will be destined for the drain. It really pains me to slam a Sam Smith beer when I so often defend them to other beer nerds, but this is just bad news. If you are an English Old ale fan, Fuller's vintage is cheaper, easier to find, and far superior.

stingo is one of those crazy styles thats different every time you see one, which is all too infrequently these days. this is one of the classics, maybe the longest running in our market, and just phenomenal in every way. whether they take some of this out and do it with cherries, or blend some lacto soured beer back into the mix, there is no denying its complexity, dried fruity finish, and tannic pucker uncommon in english beer. amazingly rich, malt forward but so interesting. not chocolate or caramel or normal english yeast, but somehow drawing on all of these. its more mature, aged in oak, and mellowed and better integrated than most others. i get a ton of cherry in the finish through the rich but tannic froth on the back end, and there is just a slight tartness like fruit from the tree a few weeks before its pickable. stingo means something different to every brewer, but for me this is the one by which all others must be judged. the original and still the best, brewed in 2011 was my bottle, thanks for this beauty. best in the morning or in the icy cold!

Poured into an imperial nonic a deep orange infused copper color with a very thin quick to faid off white head atop.Deeply fruity and cakey in the nose along with brown sugar,and sweet alcohol.somewhat sweet on the palate but not over done,brown sugar and dark fruits, and light green apple stand out the most,the alcohol plays a role as it warms.It's an English strong ale,it's some what sweet, but also refined and not in your face.

Appearance - This is a clear, dark brown in color with a modest off-white head.

Smell - The malts are rich and full of caramel with some strong wood notes that together produce hearty fruit smells such as prune and fig. There's a big vodka smell as well.

Taste - The wood is much bigger at the taste, too big actually, so the malt is a bit trumped but otherwise true to the nose. The alcohol is a little much as well.

Mouthfeel - This is short of medium-bodied with a sharp alcohol sting and relatively flat.

Drinkability - I thought they missed the mark on this. The ale was thin and the booze overpowering and one-dimensional.

poured from a 2011 18.7 oz. bottle into a chilled pint glass. Mine was 9.0%

A-reddish brown, see through, tan head with tight, fine bubbles. Head sticks to side of glass, beautiful lacing. Foams stays around a while.

S-warmth, followed by toffee, fruitcake, vineous. Slightly metallic in the background.

T-alcholoic warmth, immediately dashed away by toffee, bread, and raisins. Finishes with a slightly metallic tang.

F-surprisingly light body. med. low carbonation. Smooth as Kobe Bryant after skanking on his wife (read: like a big diamond!).

O-One of the best big beers I have ever had. The alcohol is nicely balanced with the other traits. Ridiculuously smooth for such a big beer. Good luck trying to recreate a clone, as you need open air stone vats and centuries old oak barrels.

A: Dark reddish amber with a pretty big and thick pale beige head with a surprisingly good retention. Nice lacings stick along.

S: A somewhat edgy, yet also round smell. Noticeable spiciness and stingy mix of alcohol and a hint of vinegar. But underneath this edgy character lies a beautiful and smooth malty foundation of dark bread, caramel, fudge and coco powder. Rich cherry-like fruitiness, raisins and nuts. The composition of rich sweet aromas and hints of tartness is definitely interesting, but I don't know if it's all together successful.

T: A pleasant taste, but still hard to really get a grip on. The maltiness is dense and has a rather bready character. Caramel, fudge and some chocolate notes delivers much of the sweetness. Plenty of nutty aromas. Vinous fruits (cherries, red apples). The sweetness is balanced by a rather noticeable tart note, which is actually quite surprising but very pleasant. The beer has distinct "aged" character and it is obvious that is has been barrel aged (dusty cellar, some wet wood and that general taste of oak barrel). In the finish, there is a mild bitterness and a prominent taste of alcohol. Raisins, some herbs and spices rounds it off.

M: Medium body with a smooth texture. Initially, the carbonation is a little bit too much, but it settles nicely.

D: Not bad at all, but it's not excellent. From such a great brewery I think I would have expected more, but still recommended.

A- orange-amber with some suspended sediment toward the bottom and a dishwater white head.

S- Great nose. Fruity yeast esters, english caramel malt, a touch of vanilla and raisin.

T&M- Soft and smooth toffee, dried fruit and not many hops to speak of.

D- Hides the 8% perfectly. One of the best English ales i've had.

Whoa, Samuel Smith--one foot out of the box with a barrel-aged Strong Ale of towering alcoholic heights for its homeland.

Pours out a hazed twany liquid with a full three fingers of head. Thick aroma of brown bread, candied fruit, cake batter and a hint of ripe tropical fruit. Medium body is a little fluffy from the moderate-sized carbonation. Malt sweetness of caramel and Portuguese sweet bread tangles with an alcoholic warmth that resembles rum and dried papaya and passion fruit. Ghostlike buttery and yeasty tones go hand in hand with the cracker maltiness. Quick kick of wood tannin in the middle, then a little puckering dryness ensues. Alcohol stays on the breath but never becomes hot. Slightly dry finish lingers of wood and fruity alcohol.

A lovely creation here--kudos to Samuel Smith for making us beer geeks happy yet again. This is a yearly release so hunt this one down and cellar a bottle or two for the hell of it.

In my imperial pint glass, the beer was a cherry amber color with a medium-sized light tan head. It had an aroma of caramel and dark fruit. Taste of raisin, caramel, and a bit of late hops. Other than feeling a little sharp in my mouth, I very much liked this beer. I've always liked Samuel Smith; nice to see they're trying some different things.

A - A pretty brown with some reddish hues and a light tan head.

S - Some dark fruit esters as well as alcohol.

T - Dark fruits like prunes and raisins and some spiciness from the phenols. There is also a hint of toffee/roasted caramel flavors. The finish is mostly the alcohol kick and some remnants of the initial dark fruits.

M - Pretty thin body and some medium carbonation make it a nice feel on the tongue.

O - Not the best beer I have had, but pretty tasty and easy to drink.

The beer pours a hazy orange color with a white head. The aroma is very fruity and is also has a lot of sugar notes. The flavor is strong cherry with some toffee and caramel malt sweetness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Bottle from BevMo. Poured dark mahogany with nice red edges. Puffy, creamy off-white head. Minimal lacing on the dimpled mug. Flattish, sticky mouthfeel that is kind of thin. Malty caramel and some crystal malt, but everything is glossed over with a vanilla-oak flavor. Its very pleasant, but I wanted more hops or something to pop out. In all, it is a very nice beer, but left me kind of disappointed.

Pint bottle picked up today and enjoyed as a nightcap. Really excited to find this beer close to home.

Appearance- Pours a deep shade of ruby into my New Belgium snifter with lots of bubbles and two fingers of really tight tan head. Lots of sticky lacing and a fair amount of beading from the carbonation as well. Head retains quite well and gradually dies down to just a coating over the surface. Very nice appearance, particularly the retention on the head and the deep shade of crimson/ruby of the beer itself.

Smell- Lots of caramel in the nose, with some almost sugary dark fruits behind it. Wasn't really expecting to pick up on any fruitiness in this one, but after a couple whiffs, can't deny it for me. Also some vanilla and a bit of a bite of booziness following close after. Pretty nice smelling, but less going on than I was expecting from an oak aged beer. Overall quite good nonetheless.

Taste- Again, lots of caramel sweetness and malt up front in the palate. This is followed closely with vanilla and oak for me but much less of the fruitiness that I picked up in the nose. Perhaps just a touch of candied dates, but quite a nice accent. Overall, quite nice and well rounded. Not terribly complex I felt given the aging, but excellent regardless and a standout from a brewery that puts out great beers. Would probably be a good candidate for aging but was already smooth and great tasting fresh.

Mouthfeel/drinkability- This is where this beer really hits it out of the park for me. The mouthfeel on this is silky smooth coming out of a bottle. The oak aging really rounded the the mouthfeel out and masks the booze quite nicely, making it almost undetectable. As a result, this fairly big brew is dangerously drinkable and if it weren't for the 14 dollar price tag, it wouldn't be hard to put back a couple pints. Excellent.

Overall, comes with my high recommendation. The best Sam Smith beer I've had and deceptively drinkable. If you can find this one, I'd say buy one for the experience, though I don't know if I'll be getting more given the price tag.

Caramel colored, slight haze, orangey highlights and a thick beige head of meringue that lingers long and leaves long arcs of lace around the glass.

Aroma of raisin and ripe fruit, some cinnamon and woody vanilla notes.

Flavors of caramel, smoke, dried leaves, cinnamon, ripe fruit, orange rind, metallic note, some diacetyl flavors, very strong flavors with some unexpected astringency, boozey like cooking sherry lending noticeable harshness.

Full and rich mouthfeel, a bit tingly, some warming of the cheeks, finishes tannic.

Tasty at times, overbearing at others. Drinkability suffers due to harshness.

Poured hazy, dark amber with an excellent head. The head is durable but left little lacing. Some odd orange particles suspended in the beer.

Aroma: features fruit, grains and biscuit plus some oak barrel.

Taste: ABV partly hidden; oak aging is quite apparent.

M: medium body; medium+ carbonation; smooth; almost no sign of the alcohol.

O: a refined strong ale.

Bottle purchased from Green's on Ponce in Atlanta.

Pours a clear dark amber color with a one-finger off-white head. The head tries to dissipate before settling into a medium-sized pancake on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of caramel malts with good amounts of mostly sweet but slightly tart fruits. The tartness is nothing near an American Wild, rather it's fruit aromas without being sweet.

Tastes very similar to how it tastes. Sweet caramel malt flavors up front followed shortly by fruit flavors echoing the aromas above. As it warms the oak influence shows itself but it always stays in the background. Ending is mildly bitter and a bit dry.

Mouthfeel is good. It has a very nice thickness with prickly carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I finished the bottle without much problem and could see myself having another.

Overall, I believe this is my first English Strong Ale, and the flavors were a bit of a shock as I was expecting more of an English barleywine. Once you become acquainted with with the fruit flavors this turns into a decently complex beer. Worth a shot.

(Served in a tulip glass) brewed in 2008 aged for a year in old barrels
A- The brown body is dense but clear with a red glow to it. The fizzy boiling head of tan fades quickly. The strong carbonation of big bubbles race to the surface.
S- The slight tart note gives way to wet old wood and brown malt. There is an apple cider quality to the malt with some deep dark caramel hints and a butterscotch aroma that grows.
T- The tart cidery note blends with wet wood and brown malt, all being pretty soft flavors. The finish is a faint alcohol taste with a bitterness in the back of the throat like cinnamon heat. The buttery note and cherry note comes through in the malt as the beer opens up.
M- The medium-light mouthfeeel has a soft alcohol heat and a watery texture with a fizzy bite in the finish.
D- This beer is interestingly odd. All of the off flavors seem purposeful and work together. It would be nice to have a little more malt flavor to add to the buttery, cidery, cherry, oxidized flavors. This is a quarky brew that taste like a historic artifact.

Poured a rich, cloudy, dark amber with a one finger off-white head that dissipated slowly to an off-white ring leaving little lacing. It looks excellent, yeasty and traditional. Scents of caramel, toffee, sour green apple, rich, dark bread, fruity esters, brown sugar, yeasty aromas and hints of oak. A wonderful, well rounded, rich, complex and alluring aroma. Truly excellent, showcasing the malt forward nature of the beer, the yeast and the oak cask aging. Flavor begins sweet, with caramel, toffee and honey, alongside some mellow notes of apple. Fruity flavors, including apple, but also dark fruit, raisin and prune mostly, appear in the middle and continue into the finish. Also appearing in the middle of the sip is a nice, bready malt flavor. Towards the finish and in the aftertaste there is a bit of oak and some faint wild yeast funk. A rich, complex combination of flavors, hitting all the notes I enjoy in a malty sweet beer. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a slightly drying, yet also sticky feel and light carbonation. A very easy to drink ale that goes down smooth and quick, hiding its ABV. Overall this is an excellent Strong Ale. It has a rich, complex and truly wonderous aroma and flavor profile combination, aided in drinkability by its mellow carbonation and semi-drying mouthfeel. The barrel aging makes this beer a complex, yet not overwhelming ale. A wonderful beer and well worth the somewhat steep price.

A deep medium red color, this beer shows some mahogany in the highlights and a little darker red in the body. The tan head rises tall and shows some fortitude. Retention is very good, really. Lacing is mostly spotting but a little firmer in places, and sparsely populates much of the glass.
Lots of candied fruits in here, bozzy for sure but not too hot, it's all kinds of fruity with lots of bready malts to boot. It's really got all kinds of sweetness, though it isn't too much and it isn't cloying. So much dark fruit (cherry, raisin, currant, etc.) with some big, doughy dark breads as well as vanilla and toffee make up the bulk of it. Some rum-like solvent notes and something almost like port sit in the nose and come out thickly in the flavor. On the tongue, there's a biscuit and a little bit of a fusel note, and just a flash of butterscotch, before a very interesting light tartness comes out.
There's a nice, firm malts base giving this beer a medium body that doesn't get thinned out, thoguh a bit of a sting hits the palate. It's pretty smooth with a little something to the feel from the crispness, too. Despite the sweetness, it actually goes a bit dry into the finish, which is surprising.

550ml bottle, 2010 edition, 8% ABV in this particular 'vintage'. Hard not to pronounce this one's name in its native dialect, or at worst, with an Aussie inflection.

This beer pours a clear, dark burnt amber hue, with two fingers of foamy, bubbly, and yet silky beige head, which leaves a low ebbing ring of coral reef lace around the glass as it lazily sinks away.

It smells relatively lightly of fruity, bready malt, a bit of hard toffee, brown sugar, some warming Christmas spice - mostly cinnamon and nutmeg notes - a touch of ethereal wood astringency, and earthy, somewhat floral hops. The taste is bready caramel malt, some soft vanilla and wood tannins, dark, fleshy fruit, a hint of lactic sourness, some earthy dryness that I'll continue to attribute to a quite understated noble hop presence, and very subtle warming alcohol.

The carbonation is sedate in its cheeky frothiness, the body a solid medium weight, nicely smooth, and even a tad creamy. It finishes off-dry, the oak-tinged caramel malt still the center of attention, though having picked up a bit of a dusty cellar character, with the large (for Anglos) ABV impressively well stowed.

Traditional Old World oak treatments sure seem laid back, compared to upstart New World versions (and those who would emulate them). Wow, where have I heard that before, cough, Australian, cough, red wine, wheeze... Anyways, this is a lovely, warming, but not boozy, strong ale, lots going on with the native grain, and piled on further in the barrel exposure. It's quite nice to be able, once in a while, to say that the dear sticker price was surely worth it.

I love the story behind this beer. There are so many barrel aged beers on the shelves today - everything from bourbon to chardonay - but this beer was aged in beer barrels! What a novel idea.

Served cool into the ol' Watou glass, Stingo is a hazy redish brown color with head that develops only when poured right down the middle. It settles quickly leaving no lace. This all seems about right for the style.

Aroma is classic English old ale. Lots of sweet dark fruits, brown bread, caramel, vanilla from the oak, and so on.

Flavor is intense too. This is one impressive beer! Samuel Smith has always been underappreciated and I think this one makes the strongest case for that. Dates, plums, raisins, caramel... all mingling together in an oakey wonderland. Sweet without being cloying, intense without going over the top, and full of nuances that make every sip a new discovery.

Mouthfeel is medium to full with low carbonation. Really pleasant sipper.

Overall a fantastic beer! I need to go out and get some more!

Brewed 2008.

A gorgeous beer. Color is a thoroughly hazed burnt red/orange color, very much like a fiery autumn leaf. The head is a light tan color, or dirty white, and it's creamy and holds on forever.

Aroma is boozy, fruity and spicy, pretty much in that order. There's a lingering candy-like sweetness pervading all that, almost like snorting a line of SweetTart dust.

A pretty "wet" beer in flavor, in that there's lots of sweet, even saccharine juicy fruits here, at least up front, and that trademark English mustiness as well. Then it dries out quickly on the back of a powdery/chalky sort of flavor/feel. The alcohol creeps through, adding a nice warmth, dancing on the edge of medicinal, but pulling back before it gets to be too much. Toffee-like buttery flavors come in underneath, subdued but very much there. Hints of wood and white wine, in the flavor for sure, but especially in the dryness of the finish.

An interesting and enjoyable beer...perhaps a little too sweet and not as robust/grounded as I'd hoped for, but it is complex, and I feel like by the time I'm at the bottom of the bottle, after it's warmed a bit, some different impressions will shine through...and another bottle a year down the road will likely be quite different than this. Stingo is a beer to practice vertical tastings with, no doubt.

Pours a very nice orangey amber color with a nice just off white head that lingers quite well and leaves nice lacing.

Nose is full or some raisiny malt, slight tart oaky vanilla notes, and clear british influence.

Taste follows. Nice and mildly sweet raisiny malt profile. Oak aging is apparent but nowhere near as blatant as many american styles. Nice and smooth. There is a slight bit of hop bite on the finish, but really this is a malt driven brew. Certainly not oversweet, in fact quite drinkable.

Mouthfeel is right about where it should be for how the beer feels. Many of the style are a bit more viscous, but this one is still nice and chewy with a good body.

Drinkability is solid here. Even though the abv is not exactly large for the style, this is still drinkable. Could easily put away a couple of these.

Overall a very pleasant and very drinkable strong ale from SS. A clear british influence in this beer, and the barrel aging is nice and subtle leaving one able to enjoy quite a bit of it rather than 12oz followed by heartburn. I love me some bourbon soaked US gnarliness, but a good traditional strong ale is good for the soul. A fine beer, however the $13 pricetag is pretty damn ridiculous. Give it a shot though, its pretty good, and could probably do a couple years in the cellar.

2008 vintage. Lightly chilled. Poured carefully from a 550mL bottle into my Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.

Largely clear, somewhat pale, rose madder body topped by a slender buff color head which persists leaving a wake of light soapy lacing in its wake with every sip.

Aroma reminds me of an old ale at first - lots of toffee, a hint of treacle, notable oak, caramel, light fruity esters, and above all - rich lingering malt.

Raw sugar, faint molasses - brings to mind a rum on the palate, but this is balanced by some lighter fruit notes - dates, fresh green figs, and a some other dried fruit element. Malt comes on mid-palate lending a lightly toasted flavor accompanied by an almost vinuous tanginess that seems to come from the yeast interacting with the wood. Finish includes very weak smokiness, vanilla, and alcohol - but all in all is rather brisk despite the sweetness.

Creamy, almost oily in fact, but still medium-light bodied which really boosts the drinkability.

Sort of a more "sessionable" version of an old ale - one of the first examples of the style I recall reviewing, but this seems like a excellent point of departure.
