Picked up a 550 ml bottle from TW Arrowhead in late November for $11.99. Bottled in 2013 - abv is 9.0.

Beer poured a reddish-brown with a very nice head upon the initial pour.

Nose is bready and sweet with some hints of barrel.

Taste is pretty well balanced between the sweet malts and hops. Definitely catching cherry as the dominant flavor along with bread and a hint of vanilla.

Mouthfeel is full and smooth.

Overall this is a very nice beer that I am glad I had the opportunity to try. I am on the fence as to if I would pay $12 again for this. It is a very good brew but does not command a world class price.

Bottle: Poured a deep amber color ale with large foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of nice caramelized malt notes with subtle toffee notes is quite enjoyable. Taste is also dominated by caramelized malt notes with light toffee notes with a hint of residual sugar notes. Malt notes are really well balanced and showed clear cereal notes. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Good example of a style that should be brewed more often.

550 ml bottle, English dimpled pint

A – Brown, malty, and thick, very hazy to nearly opaque, definitely unfiltered. Looks like fresh-pressed apple cider. Almost no head save a few tiny bubbles on top, with near-zero retention.

S – A bombshell of molasses, figs, caramel, rum cake, and butterscotch pudding. Vanilla and apples are also in the mix, along with golden raisins. Some fresh baked brown bread sprinkled with brown sugar. No notable hop aroma. Very similar to an English barleywine; very inviting.

T – Nearly identical to the aroma profile, with some additional caramel and butterscotch. No discernible hop flavor.

M – Almost no carbonation at all, though not necessarily thin, partially due to it being unfiltered. Juicy with no sense of dryness at any point. Perhaps some light bitterness in the finish, but mostly sweet throughout.

O – As noted earlier, there’s a lot of similarities to English barleywine, but lacks the warmth (additional alcohol) and fuller body, as well as some carbonation, of those brews. Very complex and interesting though.

poured from a 2011 18.7 oz. bottle into a chilled pint glass. Mine was 9.0%

A-reddish brown, see through, tan head with tight, fine bubbles. Head sticks to side of glass, beautiful lacing. Foams stays around a while.

S-warmth, followed by toffee, fruitcake, vineous. Slightly metallic in the background.

T-alcholoic warmth, immediately dashed away by toffee, bread, and raisins. Finishes with a slightly metallic tang.

F-surprisingly light body. med. low carbonation. Smooth as Kobe Bryant after skanking on his wife (read: like a big diamond!).

O-One of the best big beers I have ever had. The alcohol is nicely balanced with the other traits. Ridiculuously smooth for such a big beer. Good luck trying to recreate a clone, as you need open air stone vats and centuries old oak barrels.

2012 bottle, poured to leave sediment behind.
L: More red and lighter than I expected. Clarity is pleasing and a halo of head continues to adorn the surface as I drink
S: Oak, fruit, and simply sweet.
T: Very surprising, but I suppose I'm acclimated to American strong ales. Taste is strongly malt, oak, stone fruit, and a bit of funkiness. The sweetness in the smell is not present in the taste. Aroma hops are non existent, but it's pleasantly bitter. A nice, light site dunno rounds out the profile.
MF: Extremely pleasant. Gentle, but present carbonation, followed by a strong funk as the drink plays to the sides of my tongue. Finish is quite complex, changing from oak, to bitter, to dry, to sour lingering for a long time on the palette.
O: Great beer, albeit quite different from my expectations. Would buy again.

This beer was brewed in 2012 and is now about two years old. A moderate pour produces about an inch of a pale brown head. The beer is a slightly hazy, moderately dark copper color with fairly high carbonation.

Lots of enticing bready and molasses-like malt aromas along with that characteristic minerally flavor of Sam Smith ales. Lying beneath is a very distinct dark cherry essence. The aromas carry over into the flavor, and further combine with some oak tannin producing accentuated cherry or rather cherry wine notes. Definitely a little chocolate flavor in there as well. The ABV is well masked except to add a little warmth to the finish which has a mineral dryness but with some lingering dried dark fruit notes.

As far as I know, this beer is not obtainable in my town, but was bought at Worden's Market in Missoula, Montana in the wake of a beatdown by my alma mater University of Montana (the Griz, formerly Bruins) in their old rivalry with the Montana State Bobcats (formerly Aggies). An excellent beer that I just had to try.

stingo is one of those crazy styles thats different every time you see one, which is all too infrequently these days. this is one of the classics, maybe the longest running in our market, and just phenomenal in every way. whether they take some of this out and do it with cherries, or blend some lacto soured beer back into the mix, there is no denying its complexity, dried fruity finish, and tannic pucker uncommon in english beer. amazingly rich, malt forward but so interesting. not chocolate or caramel or normal english yeast, but somehow drawing on all of these. its more mature, aged in oak, and mellowed and better integrated than most others. i get a ton of cherry in the finish through the rich but tannic froth on the back end, and there is just a slight tartness like fruit from the tree a few weeks before its pickable. stingo means something different to every brewer, but for me this is the one by which all others must be judged. the original and still the best, brewed in 2011 was my bottle, thanks for this beauty. best in the morning or in the icy cold!

L: Enjoyed in a standard pint glass, this thing poured a beautiful deep red amber color with a nice inch thick creamy head. Decent amount of lace and carbonation, and overall a very very appealing beer upon pour.

Smell: There is definitely a dark fruit smell to it that pops you right up front. It also has a pretty strong liquor smell to it which isn't so bad mixed with the fruity quality of the nose. Slight hint of oak as well.

Taste: The taste is what you would come to expect from an English Strong: Complex. The dark fruit is ever present, just like in the nose. Dark raisin and prune like flavors hit the tongue immediately. Then it slowly drifts into this delightful mix of nutty maltiness with a hint of caramel. The oak nut/earth flavor drifts well into the finish and aftertaste. The alcohol flavor is a little prevalent at times. Perhaps a little too prevalent.

Mouthfeel: Very bubbly and carbonated. A little prickly on the tongue. A chewy mouthfeel as well.

Overall: Gotta say, at the start of it I was a bit disappointed. However, like most complex beers it takes a few sips to come around to how good it actually is. The way the flavors work together going from alcohol/dark fruit to a malt caramel nuttiness was superb and truly left me wanting more with each sip. The alcohol is a little too prevalent perhaps but it's still one of the best English Strongs I've had. Sam Smith continues to impress me with their brews.

Started with a big barleywine smell, oak was also big on the nose, then I got vanilla, raisins, dark fruits, sweet honey, and caramel. Poured a deep ruby brown color with a beige head, it was full bodied, had a nice creaminess and low level of carbonation. Tasting it dark fruits and raisins were upfront for me, there was plum, pomegranate, caramel and a vanilla finish with a hint of oak. I also noticed a subtle tartness that was similar to raspberries for me. This was very much an English barleywine I thought, it didn't have an astounding level of complexity, but what was there was big and flavorful. Very nice beer.

Brewed 2010 and a bottling date in 2011. Consumed in 2014

Appearance: pours a deep leathery brown color. hints of red and orange. a finger or so of a tannish head with decent retention and leaves behind a spotty lacing. completely opaque with a murky cloudiness. leaves behind a nice yeasty slurry in the bottle.

Smell: dark fruit qualities that are quite liquor like. earthy to leathery notes from a bit of oxidation. molasse. caramel and toffee sweetness.

Taste: opens with a bit of malty sweetness. dark fruits-like liquor comes in next with raisins and plums, can be almost rum like. a strong slightly bitter earthiness comes in along with a slight hint at roasted malts. leathery at times. Oak barrel qualities come in towards the end with molasses vanilla, more sweet toffee. alcohol is sometimes present and a little solvent-like.

Mouthfeel: full and chewy. some bitterness. a little bit of a prickly carbonation.

Overall: I don't know how I have overlooked this beer for so long. its just the kind of beer I love. nice sweet malty notes along with great spirit like character and just a bit of age to it. great balance and taste.

Been wanting to try this, and finally got the opportunity.

A - Complex aroma of bread crust, toast, toffee. Low earthy, spicy hops come through at the end. Moderate prune esters add to the complexity.

A - Dark copper color, somewhat hazy. Beige head with tight bubbles stays well.

F - Lots of complex malt: toasty, toffee, molasses, hints of roast. Hops peek through to balance nicely and help dry the finish. Hints of oxidation, but in a good way.

M - Rich and full. Low, pleasant alcohol warmth. Moderate carbonation. Alcohol dries the finish.

O - Well-balanced and complex. Will get this again when colder weather sets in.

Purchased at Trio in Nags Head, NC. $13.99 for 18.7oz/500ml. Brewed in 2011. Bottle code SD14L1 on neck. Poured into a stemmed tulip. My 1000th beer.

Too much oak for me and a bit solventy. An English Strong Ale that tastes like an Old Ale to me. An Old Ale start with an ESB finish. This beer will not be at the top of my list. 3.75

A – Pours a murky muddy dark amber with a one-finger beige rocky head which dissipates quickly. 4

S – Vinous, some port-like qualities, oaky, a tinch of alcohol. 4.5

T – Old ale qualities, oak, fruitiness with a bitterness in the finish. 3.75

MF – Medium-heavy body with a semi-body finish, creamy, some lasting bitterness on the palate. 4

I'm not really going to go into what I got on flavor or aroma, but if you dig trying to figure out what your tasting, this is THE BEER to experience that with. The taste is complex more so than my girlfriend and I (who I do all of my tastings with) have ever experienced. Just as a teaser: tangerine, lemon/lime, white raisin, white/green grape, cranberry/prune, white bread. It's fun as hell just to try and figure out what you're tasting. Highly recommended. I would unquestionably buy this again. Two fans, through and through, were made tonight. Can't wait to try their entire line-up (especially the stouts!).

Had not had this for many years until tonight, strong alcohol aftertaste - used to drink it along with Guinness and Scotch 20 plus years ago and I had forgotten what a complicated beer this is. Because it seems like the distribution is heavy on all Samuel Smith products I am guilty of overlooking this one too many times since then. This is a unique beer, malty, strong alcohol presence with some raisin and toast smells. Definitely in my book it is a strong beer chaser to straight Scotch. Don't pass up a chance to savor a full bottle of this beer and don't be afraid to take a wee dram of whiskey along with it.

500 mL bottle of 2012 vintage pours a hazed copper color with an ample off-white head. Modest retention and almost no lace.

Nose is raisins and minerals with a little bit of old wood, caramel, toast and fresh coconut flesh.

Taste is a smooth, fruity strong ale. More refined than most and goes down with incredible ease. The hard water gives it a little something for the complexity that most American Strong ales miss completely. Mouthfeel is surprisingly thin, though not a distraction at all. Its an excellent beer, bordering on great. I do have a problem with the pricing though, as mine was $14 for a 500 mL. Definitely worth getting once to try...maybe even another to put back for a few years - but as much as I like it, I will likely pass on it in the future. Just too much for my budget.

I've had this sitting in the fridge for a little while now, not quite bringing it out when I had company, and now, drinking it myself on a Friday night at home. How decadent, because it is so outstanding (and pretty lexpensive).

It looks like a typical English strong ale, partly cloudy golden brown, with just a bit of fizz. The aroma is funky. Like a bunch of fermented fruit. Nice.

The taste is amazing. It is very malty, but also yeasty and funky. Sweetness is big but still appropriate. I am going to savor this like brandy.

The aftertaste is slightly boozy. It could be a little boozier and still be OK, but it is sublime.

This is a brew worth drinking and worth waiting for. NEVER refuse one of these!!

550ml Bottle from Evil Eye Lounge (York - £6.00 approx.):
Caramel brown with an inch high, foamy head. Retention is excellent with zero movement over the opening minutes before settling a couple of cm high with nice lacing on the sides.

Strong smelling with good malts & toffee plus a nice alcohol edge to it as well. Plenty of ripe & sweet fruits, oak & vanilla featuring. A good smelling beer with a solid balance & the touches of alcohol only improve things, as does the sweetness from the fruits.

Again the sweetness kicks things off with some ripe fruits & vanilla plus the oak from the aroma & I could detect bread & malts with a great balance between flavours. The beer is rounded out with some toffee.

Smooth with an alcohol kick but not much bitterness. Some sweetness is present from the start. The balance of this one was good & despite the strength it was quite an easy one to drink.

Another very good Samuel Smith's beer, strong from the start but it didn't overpower & went down surprisingly easy with a good balance.

Samuel Smith's Yorkshire Stingo from Samuel Smith Old Brewery (Tadcaster), a UK classic. Poured from the bottle into a glass, this brew's mild brown head hikes up fast before descending back down. Impressive lacing and an opaque, medium brown body. Looks daring and inviting all the same :)

Smells like toffee, raisins, perhaps a dash of rum scent. Maybe even a whiff of chocolate. I like this, these characteristics surely are telling me this is what separates the men from the boys across the pond.

A big smack of toffee sweetness is my initial taste, responded by a rum-like alcohol fumeyness. Again, maybe some chocolate tastes here and there along with raisins.

Mouthfeel is an outstanding 4. Not chewy or unpleasant. You do get a bit of alcohol warmth with this brew but its a nice part of the buzz.

Overall an easily-acquired,outstanding 4 for Samuel Smith's Yorkshire Stingo from Samuel Smith Old Brewery (Tadcaster) . I felt the "Sting-o" and I loved it! Thanks to my Sheffield-born professor for directing me towards this staple brewing company. I will certainly buy this brew again!

Live review. Bottle states aged in 2010 and has been at cellar temp for about a year. Unsure of actual bottling date. 550ml poured into matching Sam Smith's tulip pint. Medium-amber body with a thick, frothy, and retentive beige head. Thick but slippery lacing.

Massive toffee and caramel nose; I don't even have to bring the beer to my face to catch a whiff of it. Closer examination reveals vanilla and oak along with a moderate level raisin and implacable generic fruitiness. A touch of grain husks.

Flavor is primarily toffee and caramel. Oak and vanilla are noticable as well. There's a slight "sting" that isn't quite metallic, which as a quick Google search tells me is related to the origin of the "stingo," go figure. It finishes with a bit of dry, toasted malts and just a touch of alcoholic warmness.

Medium bodied and slightly slick mouthfeel. It finishes slightly dry to balance out the malty and alcohol which could otherwise come off as cloying. Low-medium carbonation, about on par with stronger English ales.

If you like English strong ales or barleywines, this will be a treat. It's definitely worth a try and is a very good, if not mind-blowing beer.

Color- hazy caramel. Slight head.

Aroma- Christmas cake and caramelized pears.

Taste- Deep and rich with Christmas cake, mild vanilla and Spanish oak flavors finishing with a lingering silky plum liqueur. This is a unique and quality brew!

Poured from 550 ml bomber into a Liefmans Goudenband glass (my preferred all purpose beer tasting glass).

Bottled in 2012

A: A deep amber with 2 fingers of tan head on the pour which dissipates to a thin rim with little to no lacing.

S: Caramel and honey along with sweet dried fruits, mainly dates. Hints of crisp green apples and a slight tone of dank wet wood.

T: Sweet malt notes of caramel, toffee and honey followed by dates and lightly yeasty bread. Wet wood and earthiness on the finish. Light warmth of alcohol esters and hints of herbal notes in the aftertaste.

M: Medium bodied and slightly syrupy. Lightly fizzy up front with little to no carbonation through the middle and the finish.

O: A complex and warm flavoured beer owing to the use of old oak casks making an interesting sipping beer and would be well paired with dessert and cigars.

Poured a rich, cloudy, dark amber with a one finger off-white head that dissipated slowly to an off-white ring leaving little lacing. It looks excellent, yeasty and traditional. Scents of caramel, toffee, sour green apple, rich, dark bread, fruity esters, brown sugar, yeasty aromas and hints of oak. A wonderful, well rounded, rich, complex and alluring aroma. Truly excellent, showcasing the malt forward nature of the beer, the yeast and the oak cask aging. Flavor begins sweet, with caramel, toffee and honey, alongside some mellow notes of apple. Fruity flavors, including apple, but also dark fruit, raisin and prune mostly, appear in the middle and continue into the finish. Also appearing in the middle of the sip is a nice, bready malt flavor. Towards the finish and in the aftertaste there is a bit of oak and some faint wild yeast funk. A rich, complex combination of flavors, hitting all the notes I enjoy in a malty sweet beer. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a slightly drying, yet also sticky feel and light carbonation. A very easy to drink ale that goes down smooth and quick, hiding its ABV. Overall this is an excellent Strong Ale. It has a rich, complex and truly wonderous aroma and flavor profile combination, aided in drinkability by its mellow carbonation and semi-drying mouthfeel. The barrel aging makes this beer a complex, yet not overwhelming ale. A wonderful beer and well worth the somewhat steep price.

Poured from the classic Samuel Smith bottle into a tulip glass. A dark orange amber brew, looks like moderately strong English breakfast tea, with around four fingers of resilient beige foam. Aroma is sublime. Sweet, dark, and fruity smells greet the drinker, with raisin/grape/plum, buttertart, toffee, herbal tincture, and sour apple notes all blending together to yield a pretty distinctive nose that is not easily forgotten. Palate is similarly sweet and fruity. I might describe the overall impression as more fruity, herbal, and tea-like than expected, although there is certainly a rich rum cake component that peeks out of the mix ... Evokes marmalade and toast, crabapple, lemon, licorice candy, walnut, and floral Darjeerling tea. Some Goldings hop character apparent. Richly complex but weighted towards the fruit and herb flavors rather than the malts. Not particularly sweet, almost light and fresh, with a decent chewy body (on the thin side for the style?) and a very smooth, low carbonation mouthfeel. Faint alcohol presence although this grows over time. Includes the usual Samuel Smith kiss of diacetyl and some oak wood in the dryish finish. Well done and rather unique in the universe of English style "old ales" and barleywines.
