appearance: Dark ruby beer, heavy carbonation. Thick head of pink foam that's almost comical in appearance, but it vanishes all too quickly.

smell: FRUIT. Damn near reminds me of drinking Nestle Quik as a kid. Sugary fruit dominates everything here, and nothing else comes through. No real problem with it though, was expecting it.

taste: More of that fruit. This is alcoholic Kool-Aid. Nothing but the raspberries comes through in the tasting. Almost sour enough to remind me of a lambic.

mouthfeel: clean, small but persistent aftertaste of fruit on the tongue.

drinkability: drinkable certainly as a session beer, but a full bottle of this is almost too much, like consuming an entire box of of gummi candy by oneself. This gets marked down somewhat simply because my preference is to be able to taste the beer with the fruitiness when it comes to styles like this. I prefer more subtlety.

I'm not usually a fan of fruity beers, but I am a sucker for raspberry, and Samuel Smith gives you plenty of it! As you would expect, it pours a dark red with a nice white head, and raspberry pretty much dominates the smell and flavor. It is sweet, perhaps a little too sweet, but is also slightly tart and combined with the crisp carbonation gives a fun, refreshing beverage. Great summer beer, or apertif. Light feel, a touch sticky from the sugar, but super easy to drink, with a manageable ABV.

Sam'l Smith's Organic Raspberry Ale.

A: Light red/raspberry-ish color, with a slightly pink head. Thin and fades to just a ring. Very slight lacing, with a very thin film of sheeting (no tears or legs, though).

S: Strong raspberry smell front the moment the bottle is opened! Nice amount of tartness from the raspberry scent.

T/MF: Just the faintest hint of sweetness. Good raspberry taste, though not nearly as potent as the smell. A slight let down, in that. Very dry, almost bitter, but not quite.

I had heard their fruit beers were really good, but I was expecting that to be a bit of an exaggeration. Though, the appearance and smell pleasantly surprised me, the taste was about what I expected, maybe slightly better. Still a pretty good beer. Perhaps, something to entice people from wines and ciders over to the beer world.

Poured from an 18.7 oz bottle, into a Petrus chalice.
