Poured a dark ruby-red almost opaque mahogany. The head was a dirty white, which left decent lacing. The aroma was a combination of sweet malts, molasses, and choclate, and was somewhat subdued. The taste was a complicated mixture of a Belgium Brown, Engligh Mid, and a milk stout. Sweet malts, black strap molasses, plumbs, and a hint of dark roasted coffee made up this complicated brew. Not much esthers, but plenty of character nonetheless. The body was smooth, full, and the finish was a bit dry and satisfying.
A very nice ale, but it does miss the stout category, as the typical roasted malts were very much in the background. If one added some Fuggles and dry hopped Goldings this would make an outstanding Porter. In any event, this is one of finest Dark English Ales one can find no matter what one calls it.
