550ml bottle dated SJ24K1 into nonic pint.

The beer is slighty transparent revealing some amber highlights. Light brown fluffy head.

Slight coffee, chocolate, and dark fruit aroma.

Coffee and dark fruits flavors. The bottle references a “tangy character” which I would agree with. A little roasty.

Smooth and creamy with low amount of carbonation. It just glides down. Drying.

550mL bottle into an imperial pint. Pours a cola brown w/ a thick tan head that settles to a dense pillow. Looks like a root beer.

Aroma is sweet roasty chocolatey malt with a whiff of smoke.

Taste is both bitter and sweet, silky smooth. Nice and dark, roast and smoky.

Mouthfeel is creamy and finishes dry.

Overall, a reference-quality English porter. I'm sure there are better ones out there, but this one is good and always readily available.

Poured from a 550ml bottle into a pint glass. Reviewed live.

A- Finger and a half thick mocha head. Large bubbles which fade quickly. Sticky lacing. Ruby-brown color with nice clarity for a darker beer. Wish the retention was longer.

S- Roasty malts with chocolate tones. Toffee and some dark fruits, cherry is what I'm picking up most.

T- Roast malts and the dark fruits, again cherry. Chocolate is present too, but the roast malts are the biggest flavor.

M- Thick and very creamy. Nice feel.

O- Good beer, worth a try.

Appearance - Pours a dark, near black, brown with a deep amber tinge. The light caramel colored head sits 2 fingers thick, dissipates slowly, and leaves behind a decent, sticky lace.

Smell - Smells faintly of sweet, roasted malt, almost toffee like on the nose.

Taste - Starts with rich caramel and toffee, then fades midway until faint coffee notes shine through to the finish and into the aftertaste. Not particularly strong, especially when compared to more recent American porters, but enough to satisfy.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full body. Smooth and creamy. Carbonation is right on point. Completely and entirely drinkable. No question the best characteristic of this beer.

Overall - An old original, has held it's own over time. What this lacks in strong flavors, it makes up for in smooth, creamy, beautifully carbonated mouthfeel.

A: Deep mahogany red-brown, with 3 fingers of frothy, khaki head that lasts ages and leaves a heavy lacing on the walls.

S: Molasses. Acrid, toasted grain. Prune.

T: Sweet, toasty malt in the beginning, that yields to a tart, fruity flavor in the middle (I can't quite identify the flavor), creaminess late, and bitter hops with floral notes in the finish.

M: So smooth! Good carbonation, with a little dryness at the end.

O: Probably the best porter I've ever tasted. No, I take that back -- DEFINITELY the best porter I've ever tasted! I already knew Samuel Smith knew how to make good beer, and this just proves it further.
