Pours a deep but clear brown color with a fluffy tan head. Smells heavily of caramel with touches of licorice, chocolate and a faint hint of charcoal.

Thick creamy mouthfeel with good carbonation. The big body holds together nicely as it rolls along the tongue. Deep complex flavors of chocolate, roasted and burnt malts,

touches of coffee and caramel. Slightly phenolic hops light up the back of the tongue cutting any possible cloying sweetness. Awesome super awesome and deep complex brew that
rewards and brings something new to the table with each sip.

550ml bottle poured into a goblet

A: Pours very dark brown, almost opaque black with ruby highlights when held to the light. A finger and a half of off white head develops and slowly recedes to a film on top of the beer.

S: Very complex, there is a whole lot going on here. Burnt toffee and dried dark fruits are most evident, with nuts, caramel, and dark chocolate in the background. I could smell this all day long.

T: Taste is a bit less complex and significantly different, but still nice. A smokey nuttiness starts off with moderate hop bitterness. The beer is also quite bready as well and ends with a small amount of dark fruit sweetness. There is an aftertaste that I can best describe as musty.

M: Moderate thickness with moderate to high carbonation.

O: This beer is very interesting. The aroma is unbelievably complex - I was floored as to how many things I was able to smell. However, the flavor just wasn't quite as good. Solid, but not great.

The beer is very dark brown in color, nearing black, with an off-white head. Sweet toffee and molasses along with a lot of roasted malt. Perhaps a hint of coffee and licorice, too. The flavor has plenty of roasted malt, but it is not overwhelming. A bit of dark chocolate, licorice, molasses, and maybe some coffee. Just slightly dry on the finish as well.

Review from notes. A classic that 1st introduced me to this wonderful style, finally reviewed officially.
Pours pitch black into a dimple mug with good quarter inch mocha colored head that dissipates quickly leaving a lacing around the glass.
Smells of roasted malts, subtle hints of licorice, dark semi-sweet cocoa, maybe a bit of coffee.
Taste/Mouthfeel; nice rich malty flavor upfront that's not thick at all, with a nice subtle blending of the aforementioned licorice and semi-sweet but no coffee, before giving way to a smokey clean finish.
Overall, a standard of an english porter. Full, yet easy drinking, finishes clean and nicely balanced. Well done.

Appearance is black with a good bubbly head. This beer is so good. Dark chocolate and coffee, smooth and creamy, with a wet finish. Not too strong at 5.0 abv...this is an easy drinking beer with so much flavor and class. As far as porters go, this truly sets the bar high. Let's go Rangers!! Cheers!!
