I haven't seen this particular Samual Smith's in NYC, but maybe I haven't looked hard enough. I got this 550ml bottle as a gift for the holidays.

As always, with Smith's, the bottle and label are classic. Wish I could say the same about the beer. I know it's not meant to be a hop-monster like plenty of American IPA's. And I'm a big fan of English Bitters, ESB's and Pale Ales, so its not the lack of huge upfront hops that puts me off here. It's the mildly unpleasant taste throughout the gulp and lingering in the aftertaste. Can't quite describe it but its something I've found in some other British imports.

And by the way, where are those big hops? Not expecting a 90 minute here, but I'm just not getting much in the way of anything that says IPA at all.

To be fair, I don't think British ales travel nearly as well as some other country's exports (notably Belgiums) so I would like to try this one on the other side of the Atlantic.

This has to be one of the smoothest IPA's I have ever consumed.

I opened the bottle to be welcomed by a wonderful aroma. It doesn't have that bold hop smell that some IPA's pack. Poured the beer into an actual Samuel Smith nonick pint glass and the result is a beautiful golden colored ale with a nice smooth, frothy head that holds.

The first sip and I was in heaven. This IPA is so much smoother than others, and at 6% ABV, it's very easy to drink. It has a good mouth feel and noticeable citrus notes throughout. The last sip is as enjoyable as the first. I would highly recommend this IPA to anyone that enjoys a smooth, refreshing beer with a lot of flavor.

Samuel Smith delivers as usual!

a. orange see through with minimal head, dissipates early.

s. All I get is apple cider vinegar.

t. The vinegar taste is in the finish. There is some body that saves this rather average beer taste.

m. Good.

O. This beer is not going to be revisited. It is slightly above Okay.

Poured from a pint bottle into an imperial pint glass.

A - Light copper with a touch of haze. Almost no head after a not-too-gentle pour. No lacing to speak of.

S - Nice earthy, hoppy, floral smell with a bit of malted grain.

T - Lots of bitter hop and wild, medicinal flower. A nice roasty, grainy malt flavour. The end of it all is almost reminiscent of a cup of Ceylon or Darjeeling.

M - Really like a nice malty pale that turns into tea right before you swallow it.

O - Not my favorite ale, but it's a nice change-up at times. I like this one really cold. It's really more of a beer for a quite contemplative evening rather than a refresher after sweaty lawn work.
