Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a snifter.
A - Pours an impressive copper brown color. Quite translucent when held to the light with nice ruby highlights. Yields a finger of light khaki head that fades to a thin sheet in a minute or two. No lacing.
S - Right off the bat, this is a very aromatic beer. I get lots of light, sweet caramel, candied fruits, and a very subtle spiced character. A light fruity alcohol aroma is also present.
T - Right away I get tons of sweet malt, lightly roasted grainy flavor, and a faint tanginess (no doubt a by-product of their "stone Yorkshire squares" fermentation vessels and proprietary yeast strain). Hop bitterness comes in toward the middle and provides balance along with a more estery sweetness. The finish retains much of the initial malt character, but with a more prominent dry burnt grain flavor as well as a slightly bitter walnut flavor.
M - Thin-to-medium body with a clean, but sweet finish. Perfect carbonation. Slightly dry, but still definitely retains its brown ale credentials.
Overall - a very well-crafted brown ale. I will admit that this is not one of my favorite styles, but there have been a few pleasant surprises for me, and this is definitely one of them.
