bill, i must say we had ourselves quite an adventure on our hands with this one. Thanks for pointing it out.↲↲From the same 1981 batch. ↲↲First off, with words like strong porter being thrown out there and a bottle thats going on thirty years old i was expecting something on the side of baltic porter. This was absolutely not that at all. Totally english style. Absolutely no sour finish.↲Upon popping there was quite a bit of reaction. A sharp hiss. The was a dark brown color with a surprisingly large head of just slightly of white. Ridiculous amount of head even for the age of the bottle. The bottom of the bottle had a permanent cake of yeast and malt. And i mean permanent in that my friend could not wash it all out.↲↲The beer. Dark in color as it should be and not clear. Nose at first of subtle smoke and a lot of dough. Almost of paper. But this faded over a bit of time. And was replaced with mild sweet double chocolate cake and a bit of earth. Palate was muted but broad in the face of time. Nothing in you face. Chocolate soft, mild of carob, a smoke house that didn't have any sharpness or acid punch. And a finish of a blend of mild bitter coffee and tobacco that was at first, too soon, laced in elmer's glue. Then revealed a delicate but wonderfully smooth feel of breadiness. I lucked out on this sort of body from such an old bottle. Aged beer of delight. Excellent english porter example. I hope your experience is as nice as mine.

440ml bottle with a pull tab on the cap. Brewed for the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana, July 29, 1981.

A small hiss when I pulled the cap off and lost few ounces because of that silly pull tab...

It pours a really dark brown with some reddish hues and a few bubbles on top that turn into a very fine semi layer of foam. It mostly hugs the side of the glass but there's an island in the middle. Pretty good looking so I'll give it a 4.0

The smell is interesting. Some nutty tones, light roast and chocolate, and, mostly, a sherry/port like nose. Smell is also pretty good, another 4.0

Here's where I predict things will go down hill...the taste is, well, again not bad. Slightly nutty, a bit of bitter chocolate, toffee, and some port flavours that are very mild but there. Obviously long past its best by date but for how old it is, not too shabby. Not quite a 4.0, I'll give it a 3.5.

The mouthfeel is thin and the carbonation is almost completely gone. Just a slight tingle during the swallow. Score....2.5

Drinkability? The mouthfeel hurts big time. Just low carbonation would jack up the D easily. I give it a 3.0

An interesting experiment with a beer that wasn't meant to be around anymore. No regrets.
