Notes/Commercial Description:
Brewed with well water (the original well, sunk in 1758, is still in use with the hard water is drawn from 85 feet underground), the gently roasted organic chocolate malt and real organic cocoa used in this ale impart a delicious, smooth and creamy character, with inviting deep flavours and a delightful finish - this is the perfect marriage of satisfying stout and luxurious chocolate that will lead to smiles and refills. Samuel Smith's brews in traditional coppers, uses stone 'Yorkshire Squares' for fermentation, and ships every bottle from the brewery with great pride.

Smell and chocolate taste are problematic with this otherwise solid stout. Pours from a bottle as a dark, opaque brown with a grey head. The smell of chocolate predominates, but this is far from Valrhona--this is a cloyingly sweet and ultimately disappointing Hershey syrup chocolate smell. This is less apparent in taste, but the chocolate notes are still reminiscent of cheaply produced syrups and candies. I will further break with other reviewers by noting that I found the bitterness too strong for a sweet stout, in large part because of its great difference from the chocolate syrup tastes.

Overall, I find Samuel Smith's Organic Chocolate Stout to be very good, and for the positive aspects, I recommend you read the other reviews, which can explain said aspects far better than I. I am nonetheless disappointed by the chocolate notes, which ring fake and hollow.

EDIT: Upon successive tasting, I have decided that the taste is better than I had thought, though it certainly suffers from the abovementioned issues. I believe my initial thoughts on the taste were influenced by overly high expectations. Therefore, I believe the taste should be changed from 3.75 to 4.00.

A: Dark brown with small head when poured in a Pint glass.
S: The weakest part for me. I'm getting licorice and vanilla.
T: Milk chocolate with hints of cream.
M: Low carbonation, smooth, creamy.
O: Good chocolate beer. That improves as you drink. Most chocolate stouts are heavier...so, like another reviewers stated, I would call it a light stout.
