Notes/Commercial Description:
Brewed with well water (the original well, sunk in 1758, is still in use with the hard water is drawn from 85 feet underground), the gently roasted organic chocolate malt and real organic cocoa used in this ale impart a delicious, smooth and creamy character, with inviting deep flavours and a delightful finish - this is the perfect marriage of satisfying stout and luxurious chocolate that will lead to smiles and refills. Samuel Smith's brews in traditional coppers, uses stone 'Yorkshire Squares' for fermentation, and ships every bottle from the brewery with great pride.

12 oz

Pours solid black with a tannish head that dissipates slowly.

Smell is of sweet milk chocolate and mild vanilla. Kind of like a chocolate syrup smell, but a REAL chocolate syrup smell, not artificial.

Milk and chocolate flavor, sweet and rich with minimal notes of malt or bitterness save for a hint of roastiness.

Medium creamy body with a velvety carbonation, especially impressive for a stout with such a low abv.

This is desert in a bottle. It's very chocolatey and smooth. Great body at a low abv makes it very drinkable. It's more chocolate than beer, but if you might be into that, then you really can't go wrong with this.

Presentation: Very simple yet eye-catching label with an old school feel. Front label has a nice color scheme/graphics and gives a small bit of info on the beer/brewery. Back label gives a nice back story and description of the beer/brewery, brewery info, and ABV info. Neck label states “Organic”. Bottle has “Samuel Smith” and “Brewed at Yorkshires Oldest Brewery Est. 1758” embossed in the glass at the top and bottom of the bottle respectively.

Appearance: An aggressive pour from its 550ml bottle into a 16oz English pint led to a 3 finger dark tan foam airy rocky head of a medium density atop a deep dark cola brown, bordering on black, beer. Head retention was amazing at 6min 11sec before fading to a thick coating and ring with excellent lacing.

Smell/Aroma: Smell is very rich, full, and just seems to have a thick feel to it. Has scents of sweet milk chocolate and cocoa along with a slight bit of roastyness, vanilla/creme, and a fruity berry aroma.

Flavor/Taste: Taste is slightly sour on the front end with a berry tartness seeping through that is underlined with a hint of vanilla. Mid point is completely taken over by bittersweet dark chocolate, that was not as evident in the nose, along with a nice roasted chocolate malt flavor. Back end is very chocolaty with a sweet crème or milkyness coming through along with a bit more roastyness. Has a roast chocolate after taste.

MouthFeel/Drinkability: Medium bodied with a nice carbonation that still maintains a slightly creamy mouthfeel that comes across as extremely drinkable.

Overall/Comments: A really great stout that packs a ton of flavor and a great nose. I could taste the quality of the ingredients used. The balance was perfect with the beer not being overly sweet and very drinkable. A must try. Consumed 1/1/14. Classified as a Milk/Sweet Stout @ 5% AVB.

Absolutely fantastic! It was an enjoyment to drink, perfectly balanced with sweet undertones of chocolate and the smoothness of a stout! I am not sure if there could be a better chocolate stout in the world. If someone has one that they think is better please suggest!

WoW
That's all you really have to say about this beer . If your looking for a strong Chocolate flavor with a hint of coffee this is the beer for you. Man you really get hit with the chocolate with this beer, it's really almost a desert beer . I don't think I could drink more than one just because it's so rich, but after a nice meal it would work very well.
