Brewed with well water (the original well, sunk in 1758, is still in use with the hard water is drawn from 85 feet underground), the gently roasted organic chocolate malt and real organic cocoa used in this ale impart a delicious, smooth and creamy character, with inviting deep flavours and a delightful finish - this is the perfect marriage of satisfying stout and luxurious chocolate that will lead to smiles and refills. Samuel Smith's brews in traditional coppers, uses stone 'Yorkshire Squares' for fermentation, and ships every bottle from the brewery with great pride.

Samuel Smith Old Brewery - Samuel Smith's Organic Chocolate Stout. 5% ABV. 12oz bottle poured into standard pint glass.

Look: Pitch black, with dark amber highlights when pouring. Thin light tan head from semi aggressive pour, and dissipated into trace amounts of lacing.

Smell: Very strong dark chocolate and cocoa, with dark malts; reminds me of the aroma of hot chocolate.

Feel: Very rich and thick bodied, and very smooth and creamy, with a good amount of carbonation.

Taste: Rich dark chocolate, and semi sweet cocoa, and dark malt. Also has a unique taste from what I assume is the well water is brewed with.

Overall: Another great beer from Samuel Smith's Brewery. Incredible taste, feel, and aroma from this stout; very pleasant and extremely easy to drink. One of my favorites.

This beer is black, with a tan head...it has a very cocoa aroma...cocoa powder and malt. The taste is sweet, with malt, lightly roasted grain, sugar, and lots of chocolate. No real hop presence. Full in body...velvety and thick. Excellent.

Preface: As a person with an impaired sense of smell and taste my rating are a bit skewed.

Look: Dark with light brown foam

Smell: I could smell the stout. Could not smell the chocolate.

Taste: With the first sip I could taste the stout and the chocolate. And every drink after the first was as good as the first.

Feel: Mild carbonation, no burn

Overall: I really really like this stout.

**FROM OLD NOTES, 03/27/13:
Strong Chocolate , and nothing else.Dark Black Pour with a creamy head. Looks a little watery for a stout while pouring; but the head is there.Very Chocolatey, too much so. A little too sweet. Not quite right for a stout. Too thin. Love the aroma on this, but ultimately the beer falls short. Had some last weekend in short succession with Youngs DC Stout, Brooklyn BC Stout, River Horse Oatmeal Stout and Sam Smith Taddy porter. This was the least of the 5. **

Poured beautifully into a Spiegelau stout glass but that is where the wonderfulness ended. Smells like cocoa powder, and tastes like a chocolate soda. Too sweet and chocolaty, even for a sweet stout. I would never have mistaken this beer for a stout as there is no discernible roasted barley character or bitterness. I'm not sure it was even hopped. Mouth feel is very thin and fizzy, not what I expect or like in a stout. This is the first Samuel Smith beer I have tried which I did not absolutely love. I even put it down for a while thinking it might taste better if it was warm, but it didn't help. I poured at least half of it down the drain. If you have a sweet tooth, which I don't, you might like this beer. Very disappointing but I still love Samuel Smith Old Brewery!

Dark stout with a little bit of light going through it. Had a large head that went away quickly. Has an overwhelming smell of very sweet chocolate. Has a creamy chocolate coconut taste.

Poured dark with a two finger head. Great feel in the mouth, you definitely know it's a stout. Wonderful aroma, chocolate didn't seem to come through though. The chocolate flavor is definitely there, though. This is a definite repeat

Black in color with three fingers of dense tan head that lasts a good ten minutes. Clumps and rings of bubble lace on the sides of the nonic pint glass.
Smell is all cocoa chocolate with a whiff of malts.
Taste is dark chocolate but not the too bitter. Just the rich flavor of a quality organic chocolate bar. Maybe a high quality fudge cake. There is a some malt in the flavor which seems to enhance the cake like aspects of this beer. Mouthfeel is medium with just enough carbonation. Finish is slightly wet and it has a growing bitterness in the aftertaste.
Overall a really fine chocolate stout.

This beer pours a very dark brown with a solid head. The aroma that hits immediately is sweet, English style milk chocolate, along with almonds and figs. The flavor is much drier than the aroma, presenting only a semi-sweet chocolate flavor, and well as oats, brown sugar, vanilla, and licorice. The mouthfeel is medium rich. Overall this is a nice change from the overblown American stouts I have bee drinking lately.

Look- It pours a dark chocolate almost black with very nice carbonation from the moment you pop the top giving you a 2 to maybe 3 finger light and creamy oatmeal head that very slowly dissipates. The lacing on the glass is gentle but profound with bubbles just gently dancing on the glass.

Smell- The beer smells strongly of oatmeal, milk chocolate, coconut, and I think maybe just maybe Heaven

Taste- The beer tastes exactly as it smells but even better with sweet milk chocolate dominating the scene but not so overwhelming you feel like you just fell in a bat of chocolate at Willie Wankas evil plot but just a sinfully subtleness . Then a delicious dry oatmeal sturdiness in the body. Sweet coconut and almonds add wonderful candy bar afterthoughts.

Feel- The mouth feel is creamy, medium bodied, with a nice finish that makes you come back for more. For this being a stout I drank it fairly fast.

Overall- I simply feel this is almost the perfect beer. I could right so much more but I find myself wanting to stop writing and run back to the Vine to buy more. men and women I think this is a big,big winner A+

Loved this beer, but prefer Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout. If you're looking for a real chocolate smelling and tasting stout, you can't beat this.
Look: Dark black, with light brown foam
Smell: Very sweet, chocolate syrup
Taste: Very sweet, chocolate syrup
Feel: Sooth and creamy, not very much carbonation
Overall: Enjoyed this beer, but probably won't buy again. Too sweet for my liking, but still enjoyed it. Great for a dessert beer after dinner.

Pours dark with a light head. Smells faintly of chocolate. The taste is like a watery chocolate syrup. Not bitter or roasty. The feel is thin with low carbonation. Overall, pretty fair and easy to drink.

a: super dark brown, almost black, with mild ruby highlights. three fingers of light brown head with large bubbles

t: chocolate syrup, raisins, hints of cocoa. no bitterness

m: almost watery with medium-minus carbonation. sugary feel on the finish

o: personally i love the sweetness of this beer. steer clear if it's not your thing. if it had more body, i'd rate it higher

With a near-black ruby color, it boasts a fantastic, slightly sweet baker’s chocolate aroma, with sweetened baker’s chocolate milk taste and an effervescent chocolate aftertaste in the end. Fantastic mouthfeel overall! This is a fantastic competitor to Boulevard Brewery’s Chocolate Ale and Atwater Brewery's Decadent Dark Chocolate Ale.

Poured from bottle into clean tulip glass. Pours dark brown almost black, minimal head, thin fizzy lacing. Smell nicely mixes chocolate and molasses and promises more complexity than it tastes. Too sweet for me, though I love other chocolate stouts. This one is closer to root beer than beer. Nice mouth feel, easy to drink.

From 10/07/15 notes. 550ml bottle at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese in London, England.

Like alcoholic Hershey's milk chocolate...could give Southern Tier a run for its money. Very good, not as sweet.

Appearance: body is pure dark chocolate, topped by a thick, foamy head that crackles like rice krispies

Aroma: here we get a sense of sweet milk chocolate; some nuttiness, maybe hazelnuts

Taste & Mouthfeel: now it's getting into candy sweet chocolate - intensely sweet, much too aggressive; like drinking a flat coke that has a touch of chocolate, right off the bat feeling reluctant to continue with the tasting; carbonation is now almost non-existent; the chocolate flavour has a fakeness to it, almost like plastic

Overall: other reviews were great, maybe this was a bad batch, but it's just unbearably sugary, lacking body and real character

Served in Thulsa Doom (my manly chalice).

Appearance : Pours a nutty brown color from the bottle but forms a very dark brown to black body in the chalice. The head starts at a finger and then sticks around at half a finger. A creamy ring moves with the beer as its agitated in the glass. Pretty par for a stout.

Smell : Milk chocolate, Nesquik powder, roasted peanut, chocolate syrup, malted barley. The aroma is mostly chocolate but more muted than I expected. Still, a decent nose.

Taste : Quite a bit of milky chocolate right out front, slightly burnt, with roast malts, walnut, light coffee grounds, and slight plant in the distance. It's pretty dirty though, there's not a whole lot of clarity to the profile. It ends on a chocolate powder note and a little bit of bitter coffee bean.

Feel : Pretty exciting carbonation going on here, buzzing all the way to the finish. Beyond that it's highly creamy, and densely layered. It ends semi-dry.

Overall : It's an okay stout. I bought two just in case it rocked my world. I'll have it again in the near future, or maybe I'll let it age. It's just too "English" for me, it has that certain something...I'm not really a fan of it personally. I could have taken a dose of oatmeal, maybe a touch of fig...for me it's just not substantial enough, it doesn't "wow" me. But it is decent.

Sammy Smith is probably the most consistent and solid brewery in that everything they make is perfect. Perfectly balanced flavor, perfect color, small yet substantial head and a gorgeous smell. This beer is another one that is perfect by Samuel smith. The chocolate flavor is just awesome on top of a beautiful stout.

This chocolate Stout is different to any other I've tasted and its quite magnificent. Very indulgent , it is quite luxurious . An Aussie mate of mine , tried it for the first time the other night , and is raving about it !!.
As mentioned elsewhere , if I wanted to be really picky ...a touch too sweet for my taste

Wont stop me buying more of course

This beer is ridiculous. My non beer drinking friend said it was like Yoohoo made a beer. I don't feel that's a fair statement, but I know what he was trying to say. The mouth feel of this beer alone.... the only thing I can say negative about it is that it is a bit sweet.

Really enjoyed this beer. The nose is tons of sweet and silky milk chocolate. You already know your in for a treat then. The entire body of the beer is a sweet, milk chocolate, with a strong cocoa finish and a nice silky mouth feel.
