Notes/Commercial Description:
Brewed with well water (the original well, sunk in 1758, is still in use with the hard water is drawn from 85 feet underground), the gently roasted organic chocolate malt and real organic cocoa used in this ale impart a delicious, smooth and creamy character, with inviting deep flavours and a delightful finish - this is the perfect marriage of satisfying stout and luxurious chocolate that will lead to smiles and refills. Samuel Smith's brews in traditional coppers, uses stone 'Yorkshire Squares' for fermentation, and ships every bottle from the brewery with great pride.

A: Nice head retention, appears fairly carbonated, color is deep brown bordering on black. Appears a bit thin during the pour. Nice lacing going down.
S: Wow, amazing chocolate syrup aroma. Really, not much else. But, never got this much chocolate aroma out of a beer before. Impressive.
T: More depth in the taste. Yes, definitely chocolatey, very sweet, but some malt depth here too, a bit bready, almost like chocolate smeared over freshly baked bread. Some slight vanilla here too. Some slight bitterness to balance the sweetness, but mostly very sweet. No butter flavors coming through. This is very good, but the sweetness is fairly overpowering.
M: Medium, carbonation is actually fairly mild. Wouldn't mind a bit heavier.
O: Great chocolate flavor and aroma. If you like chocolate and sweets, you may love this beer. I found the sweetness a bit high on this beer, and it would be difficult to have more than one of these. But very impressed with chocolate character - I may choose to spring this on a chocolate lover at some point.

Poured from a 550ml bottle into a stemmed tulip glass.

A: Dark brown with a maroon hue, can see thru at the edges, clear; Light mocha colored head, sudsy and falls quickly to creamy collar and nice lacing.

S: Woah, big sweet nose; milk chocolate, biscuits and bread, toffee; loads of gently roasted malts.

T: Dominated by milk chocolate and cocoa; toasted malts, biscuits, bread; a wonderful sweet malt character. Hints of toffee and molasses.

M: Medium body and carbonation; big, thick, creamy. Impressive given the meager 5% ABV.

O: This beer creates incredible depth of flavor and body on a modest grain bill which is truly impressive. A great beer with loads of sweet milk chocolate and bready, toasted malts.

The beer pours a pretty dark brown color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is terrific in this beer, especially if you like chocolate. So, as you might expect, on the nose there is considerable mocha, dark chocolate, vanilla and a hint of vinegar. The vinegar is actually a nice addition, as it helps to cut the considerable sweetness in the nose. The flavor profile replicates the nose, and for a 5% abv. beer, it's truly amazing how much flavor this beer delivers. Also, while certainly the beer is pretty rich and sweet, it's not overly so, IMO, and the light bitterness on the finish is just sufficient to balance that sweetness. Mouthfeel is surprisingly full for the abv., though certainly you can tell this isn't a 10% abv. beer. Still, the beer finishes well, with no flavor drop off at the end. Drinkability is terrific, and while I'm usually not that big a fan of beers this sweet and chocolaty, I had no trouble knocking back of bottle of this stuff.

Impressive. One of the better efforts I've had from this always excellent and reliable brewery.

Bottled June 28, 2013.

Beer is very dark brown, close to black, with lots of bubbles. A large tan head. Good retention, head fades slowly.

Nose contains a lot of chocolate, smells like cocoa. A sweet scent that makes me think of a milkshake, somewhat milky. A nice chocolate smell.

The taste is like the nose, and is a bit too much. Tonnes of cocoa, a sweet lactic taste, some roast malt. Very sweet and chocolatey, almost like a thick chocolate milk.

Medium bodied, moderate to strong carbonation level. Smooth.

Overall, I can see some people loving this, but it is too chocolate milk-like for me. Pretty good, and very much a dessert beer, but a bit too much for me.

appearance; very dark brown, but isn't cloudy. thick bubbles settle into moderate lacing.

smell. at first, it smells so chocolaty that if i was blindfolded i might have thought i was smelling chocolate milk, once getting over the initial chocolate the aroma is lots of cocoa and sweet malt.

taste. the taste is very similar to the smell, the creamy texture of the beer combined with the very strong cocoa taste makes for a milk chocolate flavor. there is also classic sweet maltiness that lingers on the tongue beautifully.

mouthfeel; strong bubbles, very creamy and pretty smooth on the finish. very nice.

overall; this is a beer that will take a moment to adjust to, but in a good way. i think many types of beer drinkers would enjoy this, the strong chocolate will please those who are less inclined to drink stouts and dark beers, but the delicious maltiness and great texture of the beer will also please more old school craft beer drinkers. you have to like chocolate, but i would recommend this beer to people looking for a unique and easy to drink beer experience
