Notes/Commercial Description:
Brewed with well water (the original well, sunk in 1758, is still in use with the hard water is drawn from 85 feet underground), the gently roasted organic chocolate malt and real organic cocoa used in this ale impart a delicious, smooth and creamy character, with inviting deep flavours and a delightful finish - this is the perfect marriage of satisfying stout and luxurious chocolate that will lead to smiles and refills. Samuel Smith's brews in traditional coppers, uses stone 'Yorkshire Squares' for fermentation, and ships every bottle from the brewery with great pride.

Compared to the high alcohol content and thick chocolatey stouts coming out of the US, this one has a difficult time comparing. What would you expect, the US is big, bold, and arrogant...

This is a tasty chocolate brew. It is a nice dark brown, with nice even, mobile lacing. It is a session brew, ABV is low. It is carefully crafted and does not disappoint. The beer has good carbonation and isn't flat like a few of the other outstanding chocolate stouts. Mouthfeel is decent, smooth, I like it.

I will drink this in the future, but it will be hard to fit it in, since there are so many other chocolatey stouts that stand out.

I am happy this is organic, a plus.

Overall - A nice balanced chocolate stout.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a deep brown color with a one finger of tan colored head. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave a moderate level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of a roasted malt with tons of milk chocolate and vanilla. Along with these aromas are some caramel smells as well as some hints of earth. Overall the smell is sweet, chocolaty and delicious.

Taste – The taste begins a huge sweet milk chocolate flavor mixed with a good dose of caramel and vanilla sweetness. Along with these flavors are others of a light roasted malt flavor. The roasted flavors fade a bit as the flavor advances with the cocoa flavors taking their place, getting very potent at the end. With an even greater intensification of the vanilla at the end of the taste it leaves on with a quite sweet and milk chocolaty flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thicker and creamier side for a beer of only 5 % abv. with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. The combination of the slightly thicker body and lower carbonation are very nice for the milk chocolate flavors of the brew, giving it a more creamy dessert like feel.

Overall – A rather tasty and not overly alcoholic dessert beer. They pack lots of sweet milk chocolate flavor into the brew all while keeping it very drinkable overall.

Poured a deep brown with a slight tan head that last throughout the beer. Great retention. The aroma is rich cocoa. It almost is too much, but doesn't quite cross that line. The taste has a little bit more balance against the malt bill but the cocoa notes come through quite strong here as well. It has a nice mouthfeel and weight on the palate. If you don't like chocolate beer, you will not like this one.
