Brewed with well water (the original well, sunk in 1758, is still in use with the hard water is drawn from 85 feet underground), the gently roasted organic chocolate malt and real organic cocoa used in this ale impart a delicious, smooth and creamy character, with inviting deep flavours and a delightful finish - this is the perfect marriage of satisfying stout and luxurious chocolate that will lead to smiles and refills. Samuel Smith's brews in traditional coppers, uses stone 'Yorkshire Squares' for fermentation, and ships every bottle from the brewery with great pride.

550 mL poured to tulip

Pours black with a tidy tan head, lays down to a faint haze of bubbles

Smells of chocolate, dark malt and vanilla. Dissipates quickly

Taste is big on the chocolate, with a nice bourbon vanilla note. Sweet but not cloying.

Mouth feel is surprisingly light

Overall: great dessert beer when in a chocolate mood. A little more balance would be required to be a more regular drinker, but the spritely mouth feel makes an impression. Interesting and exotic.

I enjoyed this beer initially and would have given a higher rating based on just my original impression, but over the course of the entire journey I felt the taste was too SWEET to justify too high a rating. A nice beer, no doubt but I have higher standards and expect a beer to be exceptional throughout the entire journey. This beer did not satisfy that requirement. Definitely worth trying once but not worth having AGAIN.

Pours a cola-colored body with a fizzy thick head to match. Beige head with solid retention.

Huge sweet chocolate on the nose: milk chocolate, chocolate bean, dark cacao. There's a soft, thick creaminess as well, and a slight sharpness hinting at alcohol. Reminds me of a chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie.

Flavor matches the aroma, with both sweet and dry waves of chocolate, banana notes (likely due to the yeast), and the unmistakable presence of cream. There's an earthy blend of chewy grains and hops, but the only noticeable bitterness comes from the chocolate. Tiny bit of cola flavor, as well - perhaps mint.

Drinks relatively thin for such a thickly-flavored stout, but it is also a 5.0% ABV beer. Creamy and smooth, with a long, sticky, wet finish, while also providing a little bit of pucker on the back-end. Surprisingly lively, with a noticeable - but not unpleasant - sting, and no foaming.

This is a delicious dessert stout. The quality is readily apparent, and the chocolate flavors thick yet nuanced, obvious yet not overwhelming. Superb balance and drinkability. Well worth the price; clocks in at half of what you'd expect to pay for an American chocolate stout!

A - Solid dark brown with a tan head, significant lacing.

S - Mostly cocoa powder and malts, but not a strong roasted aspect - more like a milkshake.

T - There is more roasted malt in the taste, but that is purely relative to the nose. The main thing is strong chocolate, primarily cocoa powder over nib.

M - Smooth. Heavy enough but not to the point of coating the mouth.

O - This is a beer that lives up on the promise of being called a chocolate stout. The reality is, this beer puts chocolate flavor front and center. If you like a sweet milk stout and you want something that screams chocolate, this is your brew.
