Notes/Commercial Description:
Brewed with well water (the original well, sunk in 1758, is still in use with the hard water is drawn from 85 feet underground), the gently roasted organic chocolate malt and real organic cocoa used in this ale impart a delicious, smooth and creamy character, with inviting deep flavours and a delightful finish - this is the perfect marriage of satisfying stout and luxurious chocolate that will lead to smiles and refills. Samuel Smith's brews in traditional coppers, uses stone 'Yorkshire Squares' for fermentation, and ships every bottle from the brewery with great pride.

A: Poured from a 550ml bottle into a Samuel Smith pint glass. Pours a dark brown color with a full three fingered head that slowly recedes into a rocky, sea foam head.

S: Sweet milk chocolate notes with a hint of vanilla, toffee, and coffee.

T: Much like the nose in variety of flavor, though some are a little less dominating. Sweet chocolate notes with a hint of vanilla, some light coffee notes and not a whole lot else.

M: Mild carbonation for this fairly bodied beer, the carbonation suits the flavors well. The beer is a thick, certainly not light.

O: Overall, a fantastic beer, definitely on the buy again list, thanks to my friend who recommended it.

This beer was not what I expected. Pour into glass was exciting, dark beer, thick head. Aroma was good, came off like a stout. Taste wise was a huge let down. The chocolate was horribly artificial and not from grain or cacao. I was really expecting it one way or another, but the way it came off was a let down. At least I had other stout options to go to for round 2.

Poured from the bottle into an XL pint glass.

A- Beautiful black coffee appearance with a toffee-colored head that's about two fingers thick.

S- Quite surprising, as there's much more than chocolate here. I detect notes of coconut, vanilla, and toffee. Mild hints of coffee. The chocolate is there but takes a back seat.

T- Again, more like coconut than chocolate, although the chocolate is present and adds some intrigue. Slightly sweet, but not in a distasteful or unappealing way. Really very tasty.

M- Smooth, creamy, with a slight bitter hit at the end.

O- Quite a spectacular beer. Very well composed, complex and ultimately enjoyable and easy-drinking. I'll need more of this.

Love this beer! The nose is cocoa, and not much more. It tastes much like chocolate milk with a hint of vanilla sweetness. The carbonation gives it a creamy feel. It's not too rich - well balanced. With the cocoa taste, you'd think there might be a bitter edge, but this is not the case. It's sweet, but not too sweet.

If it weren't for the price, I'd make this a frequent purchase. $ 4.99 for a 18.7 oz bottle. Got it on special for $4.49.

550ml bottle poured into Duvel Tulip.

Appearance: dark brown to a light black bodied beer with massive 3 fingers of head. The head looks like the head on a rootbeer float. Head has a lot of staying power and slowely drops to an uneven cap with heavy lacing all over the glass.

Smell: milk chocolate bomb with a hint of vanilla. I bet that if you let your chocolate fiend girlfriend smell this beer she would probably have a orgasm over the smell of this beer. Serious as a heart attack right now...

Taste: Just like the nose! Milk chocolate bomb and a hint of vanilla sweetness. Hint of light roast malt and faint black licorice, but its barely noticable. Finishes with a lite bitterness from a cocoa note mixed with a hint of rootbeer and some lingering vanilla sweetness.

Mouthfeel: low end of a medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. The beers mouthfeel is super smooth and creamy. The beer is spot on with those trademark mouthfeel qualities of all Samuel Smith dark beers. At 5% abv this bomber can be drank solo without even getting a slight buzz.

Overall: Its a session stout with big chocolate flavors! At $3.25 a bomber, this is a fantastic value for a high quality craft beer. Awesome job Samuel Smith! This beer is effortlessly good. Its definately a desert beer and your girlfriend or wife will like quite a bit too. Southern Tier Chocolate is not as good as this Samuel Smith beer! Thats fact!

A - A slightly late to develop head that yields close to three fingers worth of dark khaki / medium brown colored velvety froth with a bit of a rocky top... Decent retention... Once settled there is a thick rich creamy lacing that is quite inviting... The color is a dull flat black that doesn't late any light permeate... Mostly still with just an occasional stray carbonation bubble though some additional bubbles remain clung to the sides of the glass... A thick sheet of lacing clings to the sides of the glass...

S - It shouldn't come as much of a surprise but this one packs a mammoth chocolate aroma... Loaded with fudge brownie uncooked batter... Cocoa... A mix of both milk and dark chocolates... A light layer of mocha coffee... Did I mention chocolate??? Quite intoxicating...

T - The flavor is much more subdued the nose with much better balance... Lightly roasted malts is introduced to the equation... The sweetness of dialed down several notches... Loads of cocoa... Dark chocolate... A hint of fudge... A hint of dark choclate... Some sweet cream character as well...

M - Medium to full bodied... Smooth... Velvety... Even and consistent... Limited carbonation... A bit chalky on the finish...

D - A rock solid Milk / Sweet Stout... Solid in all areas... The stellar aroma and 5.0% ABV are the stars of the show... Very nice brew that I recommend and will gladly indulge in again in the future when presented the opportunity...
