Much like heartland brewing in manhattan, this place comes across as a crowded, touristy type brew pub. Unlike heartland though, the prices were at least not borderline insulting.

The food and service here were both actially pretty good, among the better in those categories among all the brewpubs i've been to. The ambiance, despite being touristy, was at least pleasant if not indistinct and somewhat mundane. But again, its a large, tourist oriented microbrewery, so that is to be somewhat expected.

The main problem i ran into was the beer. I tried three beers on tap, and all had a distinctivly unpleasant aftertaste to them. I'm not enough of a beer expert to correctly identify what the taste was exactly, but it was the same for all of them, and came across as very unnatural relative to the taste of the beer.

That aside, the beers gave a sense of being of relatively high quality, but the aftertaste killed off anything positive i derived from them.

Based on the other reviews here, it would seem like this might have been an isolated experience, so i wouldn't let it curtail your visiting here. If i'm staying in the downtown dc area again i'll give it another shot.

Busy place with decent beers and good food. Was really too crowded to enjoy but I liked it.

There are a lot of good places to grab a beer in DC, so I would not call this place a must-hit stop. But if you're in the area, particularly around happy hour, come in to try one of their brews.

I had the kolsch and found it pretty average. It wasn't bad, just didn't have anything notable about it. In general, this is a tough style to make good and interesting, but if you're used to a tame beer, dislike hops, and/or just want something light and easy-drinking, this is the beer for you.

Now, the doppelbock I had here. That brew was a gem. It was much more memorable and was very much a good representation of the style. It was a big beer, thick, malty, sweet and heavy on bread-like flavors. It was a meal in a glass as any good doppelbock should be. The serious beer drinker should ask for this if it's available.

I didn't try the food here, but I wasn't keen to, as this place resembles a chain restaurant or generic Irish pub. This place is less for the beer geek and more for the hard-slamming beer drinker.

I previously visited Capital City back in 2008 when I was first getting into craft beer and thought the place was great at that time. I've come along way since then and I must say my June 2014 visit was a disappointment. The beers are basic and bland and it's same with the food. Atmosphere was not that beer-centric vibe that most of us crave, rather it was dominated by tourists and young political types drinking cocktails after work. I asked our waiter if I could get a flight and he stared at me blankly. I patiently explained what a flight was and he finally said, "Oh, you mean a sampler." When I mentioned that "flight" is a very common beer term he said he wasn't interested in beer so he really didn't know...

Visited last week while visiting for the holidays. I was pumped to see a brewpub so close to my hotel

My visit was pretty late on a weeknight, so the bar was only about half-full. The atmosphere is pretty generic and open - nothing offensive, but bland. Lots of space occupied by booths and tables surrounding a large oval-shaped bar. TVs at the bar, tuned to hockey

Service was extremely prompt, and they worked together which I always appreciate. They had 4 standard beers and a seasonal - I ordered a sampler, which included the standards. My first beer was the kölsch, which was awful. The pale was decent but the other two were forgettable. With the beer being so meh, I decided to skip the seasonal. Nothing on the menu was very adventurous, all pretty approachable styles.

Prices were ok, though in the end I don't think I really feel he need to come back. Just an underwhelming "brewpub" overall.

Sitting there now, first stop on my way to Churchkey. We lucked into happy hour, $3.50 beers they brew themselves. The porter and white IPA were on point. Great app specials during happy hour in a town that is usually quite expensive. Very nice touch... three massive soft pretzels with horseradish dipping sauce, free. Everyone drinking gets those, enough to fill you up alone. We had two beers, nachos and the pretzels for $13. Gr8 joint to stop and fuel up prior to hitting the bigger brew destinations.

I don't think Capitol City Brewing actually does any brewing; however, the place always seems to be hopping. It has a cool vibe. The food is decent. The service is attentive. The beer selections are pedestrian. Overall, you could do better, but you could do worse too.
