Batch 2 (removed 50% of the late and dry-hop Nelson additions and substituted Simcoe)

Appearance: Basically identical to batch one. Deep gold with hints of orange. Batch 2 seems to have a bigger head and more head retention. A ring remains for the duration. Spotty lacing.

Aroma: Still big, but not quite as in your face as the first batch. The oniony-vegetal quality is diminished. Still lots of big tropical fruit and citrus. A definite floral angle and some resiny pine and citrus zest from the SImcoe.

Flavor: Again very hop dominant. Extremely pale and dry malt backbone. Lots of juicy hop quality opening with a big blast of citrus. Lots of resiny hop oil and pine. Finish is long, bitter, and dry. Vegetal/onion quality is very diminished compared to batch one.

Mouthfeel: About the same. Light-bodied for the abv, bitter, well-carbed and very dry.

Overall: Definite improvement from batch one. Might need a touch more malt backbone to really make the hop flavor shine.

Batch 1:

Here's my attempt at an honest review of a beer I was involved with making. Take with a grain of salt. Late and double dry-hopped with Amarillo, Nelson, and Citra.

Appearance: (4.25) Pours a deep golden color with hints of orange due to the use of almost exclusively Pilsner malt. Nice white head. Not much head retention because of all the hop oils but solid lacing.

Aroma (4.75) - Perfect save for a bit of Nelson onion quality. Big tropical fruit, citrus zest/juice, and a touch of floral notes. Second sniff brings a hit of resiny pine. Aroma jumps from the glass.

Flavor (4.25) - Again, only real detraction is a bit of oniony, earthy hop notes that are likely from all the Nelson. Malt backbone is very light and dry. Pilsner malt base with dextrose to lighten the body. Provides only the slightest hint of malt balance. Hop flavor again leans citrusy and tropical with hints of pine and floral.

Mouthfeel (4.5) - Dry, very light malt body. Well-carbed. Easy drinking for 7.5%.

Overall: Not much I would change other than reducing the amount of Nelson and adding more Amarillo or Citra or maybe even some Simcoe to compensate.
