Tried some of the growler that murrayswine brought back from DC.

Smells quite interesting, firstly of beef jerky, with a vinuous undercurrent, almost like fresh flowers. Could that be the hops? It doesn't really seem like it. All those notes feature in the flavor, but they're recklessly smote--we're talking British vs. Zulus--with a nuclear blast of coffee. The coffee flavor in this beer is HUGE, and despite all the other stuff going on, I think my favorite part was the mellow coffee finish. Very winey burps. Alcohol is hidden quite well, considering, with just bit of a burn and tingle in the mouthfeel. Quite easily consumed for a 10.5% beer, but the crazy smell wears on me a bit.

On tap at Franklin's.

Pours near-black with a tan head and some slight lacing. The nose carries a heavy amount of roast with a light bit of chocolate and other stout notes. Oh yeah, stout notes. The flavor is taken over by the roast and finishes too dry. Medium-full body. Pretty good, but nothing over-the-top.

The growler pours pure black oily direct- sunlight-impenetrable oppression into my imperial pint willi glass, loosing extremely fine dark khaki bubbles that struggle surfaceward through the viscous tarry body. The little CO2 soldaten rally sluggishly into a chocolate fudge milkshake-like head, the cap fading slowly into a sticky skim that leaves gooey used motor oil legs and freckles of lacing on the glass.

The smell is rich with smoky charred malts and winey dark chocolate, highlighted by a tangy perfume of molasses, cocoa-infused roasty-sweet caramel and spicy hop notes.

The taste is darkly sweet with a mellow burnt coffee bitterness that highlights the chewy sweetness of a solid chocolatey backbone. Piling on for emphasis is more cocoa, more tangy molasses, toasted malts, roasted malts, damned-near-incinerated malts...more burnt bitter charcoal smokiness... more, more, more! A dusty dryness lingers in the aftertaste with an almost moonshine-laden Bourbony woodiness.

The drink is huge in body, languishing with minimal carbonation, keeping close company with solidifying JELL-O Pudding at the semi-solid state of liquid matter. This Impy is entirely edible, but damned sure a sipper if one chooses to make the attempt to drink it! The blackest thing I ever saw in a glass, some of you wimpier types might want to get yourselves a knife and fork to eat it with! Thanks to Cindirene's inimitable longbearded proprietor for the hookup!

Beer on draft at the brewpub. Beer is black with a thin tan head of small bubbles that leaves a little lacing on the glass, carbonation low.

Aroma is mildly sweet and overall weak. Smells fine with a slight finish of roastiness.

Beer is medium bodied and not as sweet as I was expecting / hoping. It's rather bitter and ashy on the finish, coffee. The overall feel of the beer is OK, not great. It's a decent Impy stout but not too interesting overall.

This is an amazing beer! Stopped in and bought a growler on a trip to D.C. It pours motor oil black with a rich dark dark head. The smell is sweet and heat with the coffee roast settling into the background. The taste is huge, bodied, and mean with big flavors of coffee, dark plums, heated alcohol, english toffee's and slight smoke. The mouthfeel is healthy, but slightly inconsistent at times.

All in all, a Damn fine beer!

A - Dark ... black ... brew (no decernable transmission) with a dark, rich mocha brown head that left thick rings of lacing at the top of the glass.

S - Coffee, molasses, chocolate and dates. Very strong and good.

T - A dark chocolate with a slightly sweet coffee flavor. there is a tocuh of tart sourness (normally,I would be upset, but it meshed well here). Aftertaste is a lingering coffee bitterness with a touch of a general dark fruity sweetness.

M - Absurdly smooth, creamy and very refreshing. As good as it gets.

D - Good all around. Truly worth seeking out. It is on tap now (as of review) if you are in the area, head over and get one. I doubt you will regret it!
