The rear label claims this is: A rich fruity Christmas cake of a beer, ruddy brown in colour, to be treated with caution! A grainy spirity aroma leads onto a palate with overtones of whisky, orange and dark chocolate. A warming alcoholic finish.
Lets see if it's true.
500ml bottle: can't see a BBD, poured into a UK pint sleeve on 9th Dec 2012 @ home.
Dull almost hazy red/orange hue to the body: thin biege head that stayed.
It does have a strange taste and smell with whisky hints in the mix: certainly peaty malt feel to the flavour and aroma, the aforementioned chocolate also easy to find. This is both complex and interesting, not your run of the mill UK brew that's for sure. Caramel sweetness comes along as the beer warms: so my thoughts then moved onto thinking about a chocolate bar dropped into a Peat Bog and then dipped into malty molasses before being boiled with a few hops (Challenger and Goldings are used actually).
Good depth of body and the alcohol is almost hidden, those whisky undertones however do not go away.
Different and pleased I found it.
