Big thanks to rustydiamond for this one on a recent trade. I've been looking forward to trying this for a long time but never seemed to be able to get it. On a cold San Diego night, poured into my standard tasting glass.
Perfect pour, honestly. I am instantly excited when it hits the glass, great color, great thickness, superb head retention (been in my glass now for almost 45 minutes and still coating).
Big coffee smell, almost like the place I stop every morning on my way to work. Like a place that roasts their own coffee, sharp almost espresso like darkness. Not sure what coffee was used, but not your wimpy Starbucks fare.
In the height of stout season, I have been moving through some serious heavyweights. As good as some of the greatest imperials are, this beer has become my new favorite stout. I think what clinches it is the excellent balance. You can expect the coffee up front, but thats exactly what it is. Upfront coffee, but then mellows out perfectly on the palate and reveals deeper flavors. I wont pinpoint, but what comes through is perfectly complementary.
Not too thick. I would say somewhere in the vicinity of 50 weight. No idea at all what that means. Just imagine that it is thick enough to coat the mouth, but not to the point where it feels syrupy.
I wish I had another. I will definitely be seeking this out as I would like to have two back to back. Slowly of course given the strength, but it is just that enjoyable that I need more to satisfy the craving.
Awesome. Really a great beer. I expected good, but not to take the front spot on my list of favorite stouts. Thanks again to trading, one of the most enjoyable things I have gotten into.
