A- Pours a deep black, letting absolutely no light through, even around the edges. One finger head has decent retention, and leaves minimal lacing. Twist off bottle does not appear to be dated (number codes on side of label are not notched or marked at all.)
S- Coffee, (obviously), is quite prevalent, but is backed by a large amount of overripe dark stone fruits, black patent malt, and a touch of alcohol. Also smells fairly sweet. Very nice.
F- The palate is overwhelmed by coffee flavors, that exist somewhere in the realm between a french press, dark roast, and an Italian espresso. Unfortunately, there also seems to be a bit of rancid coffee oils present as well... hidden, but they're there. Towards the middle more of the darker roasted malts come forward with an acrid bitterness that cuts the sweet coffee present up front. The finish lingers for minutes, and is quite nice.
M- Thick, full, creamy... perhaps just very slightly overcarbonated, but overall very nice.
D- Excellent again.... 9.5% is well hidden.
Overall, it is a pretty damn good coffee stout. That being said, I do feel this beer is far over hyped. The flavors are pronounced, and well balanced, and overall the beer is well crafted, but it just lacks a bit of depth and complexity... Perhaps they changed the recipe recently (my label does say that it is brewed with "fair-trade coffee") that is not indicated here on BA.
In the end, I feel that the Hitachino Espresso Stout is in the same upper price range, and is every bit as good, if not significantly better. Again, this "Mortal Sin" is damn good, but just doesn't live up to the hype.
