Alberta (Canada)

4.6/5  rDev +9.3%
look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 5

Pours out an impressive deep opaque pitch black impermeable to light, capped by a thick frothy creamy sand coloured head. Thin streaks of lacing.

Creamy roasted malt and dark chocolate on the nose, dry cocoa and raw vanilla bean.

Roasted, slightly smoked malt up front in the flavour, toasted earthy cocoa and carob rises in the middle and carries to the finish, while the aftertaste is earthy with intense dark coffee notes. Sweet earthy vanilla bean rises intermittently, and begins to coat the palate about halfway down the glass. The vanilla starts to become more prominent in the aftertaste by this point as well.

Medium-full body that is creamy and silky smooth, a truly sensuous experience, light rounded carbonation becomes apparent on the finish.

This stuff is ambrosia, if anything can go head to head with Peche Mortel it's this aptly named stout. If you're gonna start dating a beer, this is the one, and if you're gonna share a beer with a date or special someone, well, the same goes, aphrodisiac indeed. Well worth the hefty price tag we have to pay for it out here in Alberta, this is phenomenal stuff.

VT Brewfest

A-Pours nearly black.

S-Dark chocolate and sweet vanilla. Impressive vanilla actually. Roast and java. Bitter cocoa powder.

T-Bitter and sweet chocolate. Makes me think of milk and dark chocolate. Vanilla bean. Vanilla a bit softer here. Medium coffee notes. Finishes sweetly roasty.

M-Medium bodied. Velvety feel. Softer bubbles.

O-I enjoyed this one a bunch and the sample has prompted me to grab a bottle in the near future.

11.5-ounce bottle poured into a stout glass.

Appearance: Pours a near-black with a short tan head. Lacing minimal.

Aroma: This beer has an attractive set of aromas with black coffee, dark fruit, cocoa, vanilla, coffee beans and dark chocolate all represented.

Taste: This is a tasty, complex beer - the taste is close to the nose, with roasty black coffee accented by cocoa and vanilla the dominant theme.

Mouthfeel: It's also not as thick and sludgy as I had guessed. It's very drinkable.

Overall: A beer to seek out. The complex flavor makes this a unique stout - it's full of flavor, and very distinct. A great beer to dip, savor, and enjoy.

look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.75

A: 4.25 Dark black, pours thick with a small, tan head that leaves quickly.

S: 4.25 Roasted malt and coffee with lots of vanilla and a bit of caramel.

T: 3.5 Not quite as nice as the nose. Mostly roasted malt bitterness and a good dose of vanilla. Bittersweet chocolate at the end.

M: 3.5 Looks viscous on the pour, but actually a little thin.

O: 3.75 Looks and smells great, but not as good as I was hoping. Taste and mouth feel are lacking. Definitely prefer peche mortel.
