Pours a pitch black color with a small 1 inch khaki colored head that fades to a tiny cap. Decent rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smells of dark roasted malt, dark cocoa powder, and vanilla beans. Taste is of rich chocolate syrup, roasted malts, and vanilla beans. The tastes are very balanced and overall this beer is not sweet at all. There is a dark chocolate bitterness on the palate after each sip. Mouthfeel is a bit flat making for a thin and light presence in the mouth. Overall, this is a good stout with nice cocoa and vanilla flavors that shows that a beer doesn't have to be sweet to have these flavors on display.

A serious aroma of vanilla and cocoa swirl about the nose even before decanting the beer. Mouthwatering and seductive upfront and I'll later learn that the beer doesn't let up.

Pitch black in color and with a dense lace of foam that proudly sits atop the beer through most of the session while continually lacing all the way. A great look to this beer.

Large maltiness sets the stage for bold coffee, nuts, barley sweetness, and that cocoa and vanilla blend that dominates the beer throughout. Sweetness, however has a simplified confection (powdered sugar) flavor that my hinge a bit on aspirtame taste. The seetness seems right for a Sweet Stout or Milk Stout. This sweetness seems to amplify the cocoa and vanilla notes but hinder the roasted barley and coffee characteristics.

Quite weighted and velvety to texture because of fleeting carbonation and rising sweetness that prevents drying. A long linger of cocoa and vanilla keeps the memory of the beer all over the mouth making this beer very drinkable and palatable. This glass emptied way too fast.

Thanks jlindros!

Review #300! Big thanks to papat444 (via grub) for sending a few bottles of this my way. Served in my FOBAB taster.

A - Huge three-fingered mocha foam with excellent retention and some glass-coating lacing. Pitch black, with a hint of brown at the fringes of the glass. This is what a single stout should look like.

S - Loads of bittersweet chocolate, roasty malts, a touch of leather, vanilla bean, and caramel. Awesome stuff - hard to imagine this much flavor is packed into a 6.5% brew.

T - Taste is a little more understated, with lots of roastiness, chocolate, and maybe a bit of wood/barrel flavor at the back end. The bottle mentions bourbon as one of the smells, but it doesn't smell/taste like a barrel-aged beer other than the dry woody notes. A mix of roast bitterness and wood in the aftertaste.

M - The body is a little thinner than I like, verging on the lighter side of medium. There's tons of residual stickiness and mild carbonation, and it's super smooth. I just wish there was more body to this one.

D - Damn - my 6oz pour went like nothing. This is super drinkable stuff, and the only thing impeding session status is the strong roast bitterness in the aftertaste.

Awesome stuff - can't way to see "Aphrodite" in stores in the US.

I've had a few stouts and this is one of the best I've ever had. If you add a shot of a good port it would make for a good "Bloody Aphrodisiaque." I'm still debating whether it would make a good Aphrodisiaque float (with a scoop of vanilla ice cream), but I don't see why not since it already has vanilla in it. High five to the brewery :)

SERVICE: Bottle
BOTTLED ON: 07/??/14

A:
Pours a thick motor oil black with three glorious fingers of active, airy tan head that looks like bread baking or beer brewing and eventually settles messily to a healthy film. Decent retention; lots of concentric lacing spots. (3.75)

S:
Sweet and woodsy. Leather, vanilla, rum, some dark fruits, molasses, coffee. (4.25)

T:
Wow. Rich and smooth with little to no detectable alcohol. Coffee, cocoa nibs, dirt, touch of vanilla, smoky oak. (4.25)

M:
Smooth, warm, and surprisingly dry. Medium-full bodied with slight carbonation and a quick finish. (4.5)

O:
Really delicious flavored Stout.
I am not much for flavored beers but ones like this are starting to bring me around. Rich and delicious, looks alright for the ABV. The beer smells and tastes exquisite with the smell showing off the vanilla a little more and the flavor being heavily bitter chocolate. What I really like is how dry it feels. I find sometimes malty beers like this get too sticky after a while, but this one manages to be big, and sweet, and dry as could be all at once.
Will definitely have again; worth seeking out. (4.25)

bottle picked up locally, not sure of age, but it is ticked 5 and 6 on the side of the label...it is also called aphrodite, not aphrodisiaque, but the label is the same...stout with vanilla and cocoa. enjoyed from a DDC/Cantillon wine glass for both zwanze and peche day.

a - brew pours none blacker...thin off mocha colored head that hung out. some spotty lace.

s - nose is a marvelous bouquet of rich milk chocolate. desserty. the vanilla is powerful, but the chocolate balances things out. very mild roast in the background.

t/m/o - as the nose advertised...lush milk chocolate with big vanilla notes. silky and round really nice and easy drinker. really worthwhile stout. excellent beer.

A – Beautiful deep brown body with a dark tan head that pours 2 fingers high. Medium lace and great retention.

S – Dry chocolaty nose. Oreos , cocoa powder, brown sugar, toasted wheat bread, vanilla. Better as it warms.

T – There is something that doesn’t work on my palate here. A few of the people that I had this beer with had the same problem. What I got was super dry with an almost acetone-like alcohol character through the center and a really unpleasant polyurethane finish. Those that didn’t get the chemical character got cocoa, pumpernickel bread, chalk, touch of raisin, and a hint of cinnamon. (Numbers for this review are based on the majority that didn’t get the off flavors)

M – Medium-light frame that thins through the finish.

O – A difficult beer to review. There’s clearly a flavor that some of the people I reviewed this beer with picked up that really threw this beer off, but the rest of the reviewers loved it.
