2015 version.

(A) Pours inky black with a tall tan head with decent retention and leaves spots of lace as it falls to a thick creamy collar.

(N) The nose has lots of char, a touch smoky, roasted malt, berry fruit. Wow, really interesting and big.

(T) The char and smoke come through first, with lots of berries, a bit jammy, a touch of soy, dark roasted malt, and starts dry out on the finish with some bittering hops.

(M) Nice full, round mouthfeel with good carbonation.

(O) This is a very interesting beer with a lot going on. The barrel, as many have said before, plays a big role.

Pours dark brown, almost black with lots of tan head that lingers and leaves some lacing.

Nose has Belgian yeast, spice, caramel, chocolate, coffee.

The taste follows the nose closely. Smooth.

Great beer!

My first review!!!

Purchased @DDC release and poured into teku glass @55 degrees

Aroma: As soon as I started pouring it into my glass the pinot noir notes punched me in the face. Smell is dominated by chocolate and the pinot noir getting a touch of oak from the barrel along with that saison yeast.

Appearance: poured dark with 2 fingers of tan beige head dissipated slowly with some nice lacing.

Taste/mouthfeel: the taste followed the nose. Up front nice big chocolate notes which turned into oak and then the saison yeast. On the backend it's unmistakable that it's a point barrel aged beer. It's less carbonated then it's base beer less prickly on the tongue yet very smooth medium body with a little bit of creaminess.

Overall quite impressed with this tripel hybrid beer. A stout saison aged in pinot barrels. It actually works for me. I find dieu du ciel is experimenting more and more with their beers and they're doing a hell of a job!

341ml bottle poured into tulip a ways back by some hoser, cheers Mike (from notes)

A black as night, a short lived finger of foam leaves a few polka dots

S some smoke, heaps of char, the barrel plays a massive part, has some fruit from the barrel I’m guessing, faint yeast, the barrels completely changed this one

T heaps of charred barrel, red vinous notes all over this one, lots of chocolate, a little licorice, intense stuff

M thick and creamy, grit might be tannins but gritty nonetheless, so much barrel on the finish its ridiculous

O I don’t even recognize this beer after the barrel it’s a completely different beer at this point but still great

This stuff was two years old if I remember correctly and had mellowed out, would love to do a side by side at the same age but one can only dream

2013 Reserve, aged in Pinot Noir barrels for 13 months.

A- Pours a dark opaque black with almost a finger's worth of off-white coffee head that recedes to a wispy layer, lively carbonation.

S- Decent amount of Belgian influenced spices with a distinct presence of Belgian yeast, pinot noir barrel makes itself known by adding a light citrus vinous aspect, underlying notes of chocolate, coffee, and caramel. Definitely a lot going on here but seems to all intertwine.

T- Opens up with a lot of citrus vinous notes, some oak, Belgian spices that fade after letting it open up but definitely still make their presence known, underlying notes of light caramel, coffee, and dark chocolate. Finishes with a lingering vinous aftertaste that coats the palate.

M- Very smooth, perfect carbonation for style.

O- Although I've never had the base beer to compare, this beer was super unique. While I liked the interplay of the Pinot Noir with the spices, at times it became a little bit too vinous for my preference. Not something that I would seek out to try again and probably my least favorite of the barrel-aged DDC offerings I've had so far, but definitely a beer I enjoyed the chance having to try.
