Rigor Mortis Abt smells rich and malty, much like a freshly-baked, moist loaf of banana bread. Dates and raisins pepper this bread, as well as hints of licorice and pumpkin. Brown sugars round out the edges.

On the tongue, the brew is immediately filling and almost overwhelming, thick caramelized brown sugars and toasted grains rushing to fill all the gaps, and a good combination of dark and light fruit esters get what's left. Hints of orange oil and dates abound, as well as anise and pepper. The brew is quite alcoholic (10.5% ABV), and this does unfortunately come through in the taste, giving Rigor Mortis a slight vodka/moonshine tang. Mouthfeel is medium-light, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, the flavors in this beer are excellent, and set at just about the maximum level possible. If it weren't for the alcohol taste, this would be an incredible beverage. Even with it, though, it still ranks high on my scale. Recommended.

I have no idea how old this bottle is - the notches on the numbers on the side of the bottle seem to line up with a 1 and a 0; could that possibly mean this is from 2010? I've had it in my DBF in the cellar for awhile, but I wouldn't have guessed any more than a year. . . .

A: Poured from the bottle into a Piraat tulip/snifter-type glass. The body is the color of iced tea - murky or hazy iced tea - but when backlit it's more mahogany or even ruby. Small thin khaki-colored head on top disappears immediately. No real lacing other than some short-lived "legs" after each sip.

S: Brown bread, brown sugar and spiced apples - think those mulling spices you put in cider. Also a touch of alcohol is noted.

T: Similar to the nose, I get apple pie-type flavors: overripe apples, brown sugar and some spices (cinnamon, maybe cardamom). Some bread dough too. Alcohol is fairly well hidden on the palate, but shows up as a drying element in the aftertaste; heat is felt in the belly right away.

M: It's low in carbonation and a little watery for such a "big" style (and given the high ABV).

O: Good but not great.

Beer cellared for IIRC 4 years.

Poured into a tulip for Game 7 Habs vs. Boston.

A hint murky with a nice tight he's that drops quickly. Great nose filled with dried fruits, burnt sugars. Body continues in the same manner with dried fruit, alcohol warmth and a fairy sweet back taste. First pour was prickly, second was soft on the tongue. No discernible hop (thankfully).

A stellar beer, hopefully for a stellar game tonight. Go Habs!!

The label has a batch number of 1 0 punched out on the left for whatever year that means.

A medium copper colored ale with good clarity and a few floaters.

A vinous, dark fruit aroma with some moderately rich malt notes. There is a medium amount of caramel sweet aroma.

It tastes like it smells just with the addition of some Belgian yeast character of spice and fruit. The malt dominates back by some dark fruit but neither are to the extent of a Dark Strong. A wine like note again with a low hop bitterness and nothing for flavor hops. There is a moderate amount of crystal malt sweetness making for a balance that is moderately sweet. It has a medium finish and a quick pepper and raisin aftertaste.

A medium-light bodied beer with a medium strong level of carbonation.

Definitely worth picking up. It's a rich malty beer with a wine-like character along with some fruit and spice character.

11.5oz bottle: Bought this a couple of weeks ago, but it appears from the label this may have been made in 2010 (4 years ago). It pours an opaque brown color. There was a very small off white head that didn’t linger long or leave much lacing. The aroma is good. I get a little tartness (possible brett) on top. Perhaps some cherry, banana, yeastiness, raisin, caramel and others. Seems like every time you take a whiff you pick up something else. The taste is good. I was afraid that it might be bad from a whiff of brett in the aroma, but it is not the case. A very complex taste. Very full bodied, lots of malts but only a subdued sweetness. Caramel, bready, chocolate, some spices and fruits in the background. Complex and nice. No hint of the alcohol. I would definitely buy it again!
