Pours a flat, cloudy brown with an ample tan head that very actively foams and pops till it has settled from a couple fingers to half a one. Pretty good retention; lots of symmetrical lacing spots.

Resinous malt. Citrus zest and rich toffee notes vie for position at the front with some cereals, pine, lime, brown sugar.

Alternately awful and weird. Bitter hop flavors with some stainless steel, leaves, dirt, coffee grounds. Not good.

Good carbonation, thin-ish, lingering aftertaste.

Not a good beer.
At first (until I tasted it) I thought maybe it had gotten flack for being listed as an American IPA and when people tasted it they rated it harshly because of that. It looks nice enough and smells like a very nice take on an English IPA (malty but with a really American hop profile). But, damn, the flavor is all over the place, being earthy, bitter, malty, metallic. Not terribly good. The rest obviously suffers from this.
It definitely has the potential to be a great beer, but it is really not great.
Won't have again; meh, they make and you should drink much better.

12 oz bottle picked up from the brewery. Pored a dark murky brown cloud, slightly reddish hints, decent initially tan orangey head, leaving good lacing.

S - a dank cedar/pine note initially, ripe grapefruit, wet wood, has some character that reminds me of after a rainstorm, caramel malts are in evidence, and on top of that a decent load of citrusy and dank pine resin hops, a bit much caramel but otherwise interesting.

T - initially there is grapefruit mixed with a meaty maltiness, pine needles, dank oily hops, with a dry caramel undercurrent that has some blackcurrent and woody tones, then getting a bit more biscuity and lemony, caramel recedes a bit, then the finish is a crisp pale malt breadiness mixed with a lingering citrus hop character. Overall a full bodied tangy caramel flavour, but it dries out fairly well on the finish.

M - Initially has a zesty lightness before the heavy caramel comes through, it has just enough carbonation to carry it through but it is a slugger of an IPA, with a big sticky body, manages to remain session able and tasty with the help of a drying balanced finish.

I had expected the amount of caramel to be overpowering, but this was a tasty and decently sessionable IPA. I can see the English roots but the hopping and bitterness was decidedly american and West Coast, considerable dank grapefruit and cedar sappy and dank notes made it quite a flavourful offering, and one I might seek on occasion. Hit the mark, despite some balance tweaks that might elevate it.
