This beer was specially brewed for Dieu du Ciel’s sixth anniversary. It reflects the recent tendency of American brewers to push all beer styles to the extremes. This lager is therefore quite strong in alcohol and it has a sharp but delicate bitterness, like all pilsners. The beer is full-bodied and well balanced thanks to the delicate sweet flavours that come through.

Thanks to Papat444 for this. Looks like it was bottled Feb 2012, but the marker on the month is incredibly slight, so not positive.

A vigorous pour results in a smallish white head. Good retention. Minimal lace. Clear golden in colour.

Nose contains biscuit, sweet malt. Honey. Lots of peach. Green grape.

This is my first double pilsner, but I find the taste to be truly bizarre- not in a bad or good way, just unlike anything I have had before. Peach, honey, biscuit and a strong oily/boozy favour that is reminiscent of a DIPA. Certainly more hopped than any pilsner I have had before. Slightly sweet, but finish is fairly dry. I get some of the flavour that I cannot describe but associate with lagers, assumedly a result of the yeast, which I dislike.

Medium bodied, moderate to high carbonation. Bready, a bit oily.

Overall, interesting beer! I am not generally a pilsner fan (or lager fan generally), but I enjoyed this beer more than I expected.

Reviewing the 6e Soir from Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel out of Montreal in Canada.
Score: 87

Bottled in August of 2012. Served in a Surly Darkness snifter and enjoyed on 10/16/12.

Appearance: Pours a translucent golden color with a finger of white head that quickly settles to a bubbly ring around the glass. Oily lacing with splotchy froth. Poor lacing and okay retention. 3/5

Smell: Biscuits, subdued tropical citrus, malted barley, and a hoppiness that directly reminds me of Samuel Adams' Noble Pils. There is also a light "mustiness" in the nose akin to what a glass of what you leave out overnight smells like the following morning. There is also a faint "Corn Pops cereal" smell too. 3/5

Taste: The nose gave me low exceptions, but the taste is actually pretty good! Corn Pops, mango, mellow tropical citrus and a very mild, clean hoppiness that layers and grows as the beer warms. The amount of tropical citrus flavor in the beer also grows as it warms up, with notes of orange, grapefruit and tangerine coming out. As the beer warms, the amount of Corn Pops flavor present drops off and this beer's flavor profile approaches that of an IPA. 4/5

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Oily mouthfeel, lightly sticky. Bitter, but not IPA bitter. Lightly dry finish. 4/5

Overall: An IPA-esque pilsner that delivers where it counts -- the taste and mouthfeel.

Recommendation: Delicious and worth drinking, but not worth specifically hunting down. This would make a great gateway beer to IPA's for casual beer drinkers in my opinion.

Pairings: Horseradish crusted Djion chicken.

Cost: $5 for a 12 oz bottle.

Big thanks goes out to oldp0rt for this one as an extra in a recent trade! Served from bottle into a Grolsch pilsner. Poured a golden yellow-orange with a half finger slightly off-white head that remained throughout. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, fruit, grain, spice, and alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, floral, grain, wheat, fruit, and alcohol. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty decent brew. I was really surprised at how much alcohol I found in this one. There is just something about imperial pilsners that don’t really carry enough flavor and complexity to carry the alcohol over for me. It may just be me, but that is how I feel about the style as a whole. The aroma and mouthfeel on this one were actually quite nice though if I’m fair. Just wish the booziness was toned back just a touch. Still worth trying if you get the opportunity.

Single bottle from Broue Ha Ha in Gatineau, picked up a couple of bottles to mull over.

Poured into a Chimay goblet. Bright caramel-honey in colour, very clear, good sturdy head of about a half inch that recedes into a half-moon of foam. Some lacing patches.

Nose is quite bizarre, some intriguing cross between a Czech pilsner and a double IPA or American barleywine. A bit of noble hops, biscuit, and crispness accompanied by a very sweet, fruity malt smell, maybe a touch of citrus hops as well.

Took me a few sips to really appreciate this brew as my brain was doing a Harvey Dent sort of thing, where one sip was pilsner, the next was DIPA. I have to say that the pilsner is getting overpowered here, and so what I get more often than not is a double IPA that has some noble hops and white bread to it. I enjoy it, don't get me wrong, I just don't think pilsner. I will say that the stronger ABV and bigger heft to the brew has not made drinking this unpleasant.

Sticky, heavier bodied (again, like a DIPA), assertive carbonation.

Certainly worth trying at any rate. Maybe a stronger dose of the noble hops or something to combat the fruitiness would have made this beer closer in line to a pilsner, which would have been really something. However, erring on the side of a strong IPA is not a bad thing either!

A: Pale amber color with a little bit of haze. Head is off white and creamy. Good retention and lacing.

S: Well, it does smell like a Pilsner. The malts are sweet and biscuit-y. A touch of honey. A bit of peach and mango in the hops. Floral and herbal notes at the end.

T: Malts are still sweet with the honey and light biscuit. The fruits aren't there though. Quite floral (with a bit of a fake taste to it, medicinal). Still some good herbal and earthy notes. A bit too sweet.

M: A bit too sticky for the style. Still, the carbonation is strong and stingy, that helps to offset the stickyness.

O: This is a decent beer but nothing that makes it stand out. I did enjoy it but I wouldn't recommend it either.

Serving: 341ml bottle poured into pilsner glass.

Appearance – Copper coloured, clear, large fizzy bubbles, with light, off white head. The bubbles were much more prevalent in the pilsner glass than other glass styles.

Smell - Sweet, apple on the nose, with slight underlying hops which come out more as the beer warms.

Taste: Starts with the sweet apple flavour, quickly giving way to bitterness/hops, with the bitterness lingering till the end...

Mouth - Light carbonation, medium in body, lasting froth on the tongue.

Overall – Interesting 'fruit' flavours typical of this brewery, blended into a nice hoppy pilsner/double that therefore verges on a type of IPA. Very easy drinking for the ABV of 8.9%, which could mean trouble if you wanted to keep drinking this beer, which you most likely will. Good thing it comes in packs of 4! Recommended to drink in a proper pilsner glass which really brought out more flavours than when tried in a modest tulip.

341ml bottle poured into tulip 25/4/12 thanks papat444 for the bottle

A glowing golden orange with a deep haze, I see lots of tiny bubbles going up the side of the glass but can't see much beyond the edge, thin cream colored head falls quickly but even the thin film left behind leaves rings of lace

S sweet malt some honey perhaps with a little toffee, there's faded grassy hops and grated carrot of all things and some booze

T along the same lines as the smell, the hops are holding fairly well but some sweet malt is starting to take over with caramel notes, a slight floral aspect and some orange add to the smell and I taste no booze

M fairly thick for the color with enough bubbles to give it some life, not much heat for the strength and a marmalade finish

O a few months on it but still has a nice pilsner hop profile, interesting stuff for sure in a style I have little experience with

I'll look for this one in the future as it would be interesting if it improved or diminishes with a little age, cheers again papat444 for the opportunity
