Ale Rousse Fumee, or, Smoked Brown Ale (in english i believe).

Unlike many of the smoked beers i have tried in the past, this particular offering was not a stout or porter. It was a brown ale.

The pour was a nice amber colour with a very small white head. The malt was roasted over beachwood prior to brewing and this is obvious in the smokey & woody nose.

The smoked malt was also prominent in the taste but not overpowering. Possibly a hint of smoked ham as well and i mean that in a nice way. This beer was not overpowering in its smokey, maltiness but rather it was nicely balanced and offered a good smoked beer in a lighter, easier drinking fashion. A nice woodiness in the finish.

This beer appears a clear medium copper hue, with a small amount of thin white head, and no lace. It smells like smoked wood, very much like the smokiness in smoked salmon, and a very subdued caramel malt. The taste is smoky roasted sweet caramel malt. The carbonation is moderate, the body oily, and a bit cloying, and it finishes dry, smoke in the throat style.

Don't know why this isn't classified as a rauchbier, as the maltiness is quite thoroughly overshadowed by the ingrained smokiness.

Pours lightly smokey yellow with lasting three-eighths of an inch lasting head. Slightly smokey aroma. very good taste, with controlled smoked malt, and a sweet spicey finish that satisfies. Average mouthfeel, smooth, Very drinkable.A lovely smoked beer, thanks Luc!

A- Dirty-white consistant head. Liquid is a very dark reddish amber with lots of bubbles throughout. Looks like heady coke. Lacing is great.

S- Wet wood ashes.

T- Smoke. A little sour. Also tastes like water and smoke so the smell isn't that far off. I wish there was more. I had this at room temperature and didn't find anything special.

M- Thin and carbonated. I guess it works well to ease off the smokiness but it makes it feel a little cheap though it does foam up nicely in mouth.

D- I've had a few smoked beers but never find them too drinkable. I guess this is one of the better ones.

EDIT: Since my review, I've downed a four pack of this and am really starting to enjoy it. I never wanted to buy smoked beers before and I just might be starting a craving for them. This is good beer.

Charbonniere is an opaque, dark brown and maintains a good cover of bubbly cream-white head. Decent lacing.

Smells of smoked sausage, campfire, cardboard and dark malt with German hops and dark, fermenting fruit in the background. Fairly similar to Aecht Schlenkerla, though not as powerful or as well balanced. Still, quite nice.

Again, there are similarities to Aecht Schlenkerla in the flavour but it's not pulled off quite as well. Up front there is a good amount of campfire smoke, though it's pretty smoothed out. Other than the decent smokiness, there's not much of interest. Some dark malt which, again, could be increased. Dark, earthy German hops on the finish, along with a good kick of alcohol, which is too present for the ABV, feeling every bit of its 5.4%.

The feel is acceptable but plain. Your standard medium-light body with moderate carbonation. Slightly bitter finish, though not drying. Nothing special.

This could be even more drinkable than Aecht Schlenkerla, in spite of being a lesser beer overall. Especially drinkable as a smoked beer, I could session this if I felt like something smoky. This would actually be great to drink a bunch of while sitting around a fire on a cool summer evening.

Appearance: Copper brownish, and relatively translucent. A very appealing stream of frothy bubbles dancing on top.

Smell: Very pleasing woody smoke, not at Schlenkerla levels but enough to satisfy Rauch-heads like me, without alienating those who are a bit sheepish or never been exposed to this style before. Really interesting grainy aspect to it as well, and a tiny bit ashy, but not at an unpalatable degree.

Taste: The smoke factor is spread out very well on the palate. It hits you solidly at first, balances out in the middle with a very solid malt structure and finishes long with hickory traces. They should brew this more often.

Pours brown with a large lasting head.
Immediately noticeable in the aroma is smoked ham, campfire and bacon in large quantities. Underneath is some barely noticeable caramel.
The smoky character is nor as overpowering as a flavour, allowing sweet caramel, nutty malt and a soft roasty character to come into play.
Carbonation is a little full on.
Got nothing on Aecht Schlenkerla, but nice stuff none the less.

Appearance. Pours a deep amber with some nice red hues, and a finger of creamy light-khaki head. So far so good!

Smell. Meaty, thick smoke. Almost has a salty fried pork fat thing going on. Just a bit of grainy caramel in behind.

Taste. Nice smoke, not too strong and not meaty like the smell. A bit of light sweet caramel malt and even a bit of herby hops in there ...maybe not, but there's a slight bitterness for sure.

Mouthfeel. Medium body, medium carbonation.

Overall. Nice for the style. The smoke is in check which is always nice and the beer comes through. Thanks again SebD!

Bottle: Poured an amber color ale with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of smoked wood with caramel malt in the background. Taste is also a nice mix between some deep smoky notes and smoked salmon with some lightly sweet caramel malt. Body is about average with good carbonation. Very well done with nice balance between the smoke and the malt bill.

A new bottled beer from DDC... I'm so happy.

Dark color beer. It is dark brown with a creamy head on top. As usual with this brewery, the head stick well to the glass. The aroma is smoked!... wow I like this. I get some bacon in there too. No hops. On the taste side, it is smoked again. Everywhere from start to finish. More like a smoked wood than bacon, however. The taste is better than the smell. A bitterness in the end, however it is not strong. One good thing is the taste lingers in the mouth for a good amount of time. We note also the carbonation in the mouth. A good smoked beer.

Decided that I was going to go on a fridge cleaning for the next week before I need to take a break for a while. Went with this mixed sixer last night in an attempt to clean out some lighter fare. Served cold and poured into a pint glass, this was consumed on 11/03/2010.

A new one from a brewery I have always had great luck with, I jumped at the chance to try this one. Pours out a nice dark brown with a head of tan that reaches a height of around an inch or so before settling back down and leaving some nice lacing along the sides.

Aroma is full of campfire smoke right off the bat. I had been expecting it but it really came off quite strong and full. Really nicely done here I have to admit. Nice notes of light chocolate and big roasted malts are always a welcome treat. Flavor carries this over quite well as the chocolate and earthy notes lay underneath that wonderful smoky campfire like flavor that leaves a long finish with rich development across the tongue.

Overall a very fine example of the style and one that is extremely drinkable. I had no issues with putting this one down quickly and easily.

Charbonniere is French for "Coal Woman", and while this beer tastes very little like a woman, it is reminiscent of coal. Really what it is, is a smoke beer. Before kilning and indirect heating was used to dry and malt barley grains, they were smoked over direct fires creating a very distinct and smoky beer. Eventually when maltsters mastered indirect heating, brewers were able to use unsmoked malted barley creating a cleaner, more elegant beer capable of taking on a new variety of flavors.

The old smoked ales though do still exist. They are most famous in Bamberg, the venerable smoke beer capital of the world. Dieu Du Ciel's Charbonniere uses smoked malts hailing from Bamberg to recreate a soft smoky flavor in the beer with a rich malt backbone. It has been brewed since 1999 at Dieu Du Ciel's brewpub and fits perfectly with the astonish lineup of beer's they offer.

The Charbonniere comes in 355ml bottles at 5% abv, and as far as I have seen, they are only available in Quebec. I opened it up cool around 8C (45F) and poured it into a tall tulip glass. The pour was big and frothy forming a lush 2 inch tan brown head with streak of bobbles and a pillowy, creamy cap. The beer stood and amber maroon with glimmers of deep red garnet, purple and hints of gold. It was slightly opaque, and very close to black, showing great dark brick browns. Great depth of color and intensity drew me into this beer.

The nose is classic rauchbier with smooth smoky notes of BBQ, smoked sausage, char and firewood. The smoke is not overpowering and lends into some warm malt sweetness getting close to toffee, but more like slightly burnt brown sugar. No hops are noticeable here, but it does smell fresh and quenching. You should never dismiss a rauchbier from being supremely quenching, they can refresh your palate with the best of pale ales!

A nice big gulp of the Charbonniere reveals smooth and silky smoke flavors guided along by light caramel malts, hints of spice and pepper, and a clean very dry hop finish. The beer is elegant and delicate, and not all showy and blunt. The smoke is soft and smooth gliding over your tongue just glancing at wood fires, and then moves into your cheeks showing off smooth and softly rich flavors of BBQ, char and smoked meat. Hints of pepper and spice make their way along the sides of your tongue and tickle the back of your throat.

Malt does play the primary role here and is the spine and nervous system of this beer. It is smooth and lightly sweet with soft biscuit and caramel on the palate, but an overall dry, slightly sweet feeling. Hops show soft herbal bitterness that touches in at the back of the beer and rounds it out nicely. It is not nearly as potent as the majority of rauchbiers that I have had, but does exemplify great flavors in a delicate and quenching soft smoke beer.

A clean and crisp finish makes the Charbonniere a very easy drinking beer and would pair perfectly with anything off the grill, or even a smooth cigar.

Belgian Dark Ale or Raunchbier?


Brownish, reddish beer who is quite limpid abords a great nice foamy head that kept itself long enought.

Smell of of smoked malt, smoked bbq flavours, smoke and woods with a shy hoppy and yeasty finish.

Tastw wise, the smoked flavours hits you but are quite balanced betweem the smokiness, hops and yeasty spicy flavours. Shy BBQ flavours such as hickory. Well balanced

Smoked Red Ale. Charbonniere - loosely, a place that makes charcoal. (I think).

Red with a brown tinge. Garnet is a good description. Head is a couple fingers' worth and drops back to a moderate covering layer. Nose holds smoke, obviously, but to my surprise there's more. The rest of the beer holds its own. There's some hoppiness to the taste, and the smoke is more akin to that of smoked sausage. (and indeed, that's what I was eating while drinking this - a smoked deer sausage)

A very tasty and quaffable smoked. Kudos to Dieu du Ciel for daring to make a smoked beer where the smoke is restrained. Don't get me wrong, I love my Smoked Porter and my Aecht Schlenkerla - it's just refreshing to find something different.

edit: had a pint at the brewpub. everything I said last year stands. This is a great beer. For the record - I've had rauchbier in Bamberg that wasn't as smoky or half as tasty as this. ('twas the Spezial).

On draft at The Blind Tiger, NYC.

Poured a deep amber hue with a half finger foamy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured a meaty smoke.

The taste was upfront salty smoke with a lingering spiciness. A touch of thin grain detected toward the finish.

The mouthfeel was a touch thin.

Overall a nice smoke beer. God spice as well.

Pours a light rusty brown with a smattering of bubbles which stick around, seems a little light for what I would go for...

Smoke jumps out of the nose, more campfire than smoked meat, just a hint of hickory and ash. A bit of minerally malt, just a hint of biscuit.

Very well integrated smoke, doesn't overwhelm like some. Helped out by a nice grassy, minerally hop bitterness in the finish which, when paired with the malt base, almost reminds me of an alt + smoke. A little thin in the body but the lack of heft makes this more of a plain ol' drinker, especially with the well integrated smoke. Would gladly drink it again, paired well with BBQ. Thanks Robbo!

One of their most regular beers

Very inspiring light brown/red color. Good bouquet that doesnt quite reveal what you're going to taste, spices, forest. As the commercial description says : "The smoky taste is quite dominant at each new draught". We'd regret the smoky taste for long if it'd ever quit the mouth. and while it's so long-lasting, it remains comfortable and light with slight hints of salmon in the finish. This remains rather retrained for the smoke lover I am and imo not exactly Dieu Du Ciel's best take at the famous Bamberg style
