Reddish brown, ring of white head, some lace. Smell is smokey, meaty with lots of BBQ and campfire aromas, faint touch of peat, more or less a malty smokey affair all the way through. Taste is like the nose, smoke and malt, BBQ and meaty flavours, just a touch of lightly salty peat, more campfire aftertaste. Medium carbonation, medium body, good feel. Solid and worth drinking again, basically a second rate Schlenkerla which is quite the compliment for this style.

Big thank you to SebD for this and all the others in a great recent CANBIF box. Cheers dude!

Appearance. Pours a deep amber with some nice red hues, and a finger of creamy light-khaki head. So far so good!

Smell. Meaty, thick smoke. Almost has a salty fried pork fat thing going on. Just a bit of grainy caramel in behind.

Taste. Nice smoke, not too strong and not meaty like the smell. A bit of light sweet caramel malt and even a bit of herby hops in there ...maybe not, but there's a slight bitterness for sure.

Mouthfeel. Medium body, medium carbonation.

Overall. Nice for the style. The smoke is in check which is always nice and the beer comes through. Thanks again SebD!

Appearance: It has a nice dark ruby/brown color to it. It has a nice creamy beige head that dies down moderately and leaves some lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of smoke (mix of campfire & smoked bacon), perhaps some caramel and toffee but it's hard to tell with all the smokiness.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a some sweet caramelly malts upfront followed by tons of smoke and some faint dark fruit notes.

Mouthfeel: It has a low/medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.

A: A clear transparent brown with a little bit of off white head.

S: Smoke. Delicious, delicious smoke.

T: Smokey malts come through as dominant, not overpowering but still pretty dominant. A little bit of some kind of sweet caramel malt also peeks its head providing a subtle change in flavor and depth to the character of the beer. Bitterness is also nicely done. Flavors of ham and other smoked meats instantly come to mind but the beer elements are still there proving that you're not just drinking liquid smoke.

M: The mouthfeel is nicely formed and its not overly thick or thin.

O: Pretty good beer. I found it a bit more potent than Aecht Schlenkerla, which has sort of become the front all smoked beers are now based on, for me anyways. Whereas i found Aecht sessionable or a everyday beer this was a bit more bold, but non the less an astounding beer and kudos to Dieu du Ciel for another great beer.

Thanks to Sean for this one. Served in a snifter.

A - White foam settles to a thin collar, wisps, and minimal lace. Very dark brown body that's transparent when held to the light. Could use more head volume, but otherwise quite attractive.

S - Smoked malts, honey-drizzled ham, a bit of cocoa. Not particularly complex, but on point for the style.

T - The taste isn't quite as good, as the balancing malt sweetness is a bit overwhelmed by char, smoke, and burnt malt flavors. Gets a tad bitter and astringent after a while, although it's still in the acceptable range for a smoked beer.

M - Zesty carbonation, dry texture with lingering smoke on the palate. Medium body, and predictably no alcohol warmth.

D - A decent smoked beer. I'd drink it again if there were limited options available, but I can think of plenty of smoked beers or Dieu du Ciel offerings I'd much prefer. Appreciate the lower ABV.

Taken from notes from a recent trip to Montreal and Vermont. This beer was classified as a Rauchbier at the Brewpub.

On tap at Dieu du Ciel!. Pours a dark mahogany color with an inch of frothy head. Lots of lacing. The aroma reminds me of a campfire. Smokey malts with an almost meaty smoke aroma, kind of like bacon. The taste is of the smokey malts and earth. Burnt leaves and a campfire. Dry with some charred oak. The mouthfeel is somewhat light and thin which help makes this brew more drinkable considering the amount of smoke flavor. I love this style of beer but haven't been able to find many really good ones. Overall, this is the best Rauchbier I have ever had (thus far).
