Enjoyed at Festival Bières et Saveurs 2008. They call it an extra stout, its not a RIS really, and sorelative to style it should have a higher percentile. Opaque black with roast, malty creamy aroma. Mocha head with lace. Licorice, creamy chocolate, and roasted barley is the taste. Fairly full mouthfeel.

Appearance: Beautiful black robe, with no chill haze to dull it up, and a somewhat decent mocha head that slowly tapered away at around the half-pint point.

Smell: The usual combo of cocoa and coffee, the fusel alcohol then creeps up on you quite cool and solvent-like in the nose, with plums and other dark fruits in the mix.

Taste: Smooth carbonation, nice roasted malt and decent body, however it sort of turns to ashes in the finale, leaving it dry and a little flat in the end.

On tap at the brewpub.

Pours a deep and opaque black, no light gets through, very thick and frothy brown head, slowly drops to a solid ring around the glass, lots of lace sticks, looks good.

Smell is neat, very sweet and malty, toffee, licorice, lots of dark fruit, chocolate covered raisins and prunes, brown sugar, molasses, a bit of vanilla, light alcohol, very rich.

Taste is similar, very sweet, brown sugar and toffee, biscuit, licorice, molasses, some chocolate and a bit of roast, vanilla, lots of dark fruit, sweet in the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with low carbonation. A touch sweet for me, but that seems to be the trend for a lot of QC stouts. Still pretty enjoyable.
